1 SONADA DEGREE COLLEGE P.O SONADA, DIST DARJEELING PROSPECTUS FOR ADMISSIONS ( ) Situated in Sonada, Darjeeling, less than one km from Sonada Railway Station, SONADA DEGREE COLLEGE is a co-educational Degree College, established in the year It is a Government established college, under the pay packet system and other financial assistance from the Government of West Bengal. The College campus is spread over approximately four acres of land in an ideal natural environmental location and has a very congenial atmosphere for studies, sports and other co-curricular activities. The college has a permanent affiliation with the University of North Bengal, Raja Rammohanpur, P.O. North Bengal University. The University Grants Commission (U.G.C), Govt. of India, New Delhi has enlisted this college under section 2 (F) and 12 (B) of the UGC Act, Thus, this college is eligible to receive financial and other assistance from the UGC, ICSSR, CSIR, Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India and other Central Govt. organizations, in addition to the Govt. of West Bengal. 2 ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION TO REGULAR DEGREE COURSES: A student may be admitted to B.A. three years Degree courses (Honours/General) after passing the Higher Secondary Examination in the general stream conducted by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education in (10+2) pattern after a period of 12 years of study or examination conducted by Indian School Certificate (ISC) or Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSC) or any Other Board recognized and equivalent by the University provided he/she has passed in at least four subjects with English as a Compulsory Subject, excluding Environmental Studies provided further that all students who have passed the (10+2) Examinations before 2007, shall be admitted in terms of the pre-amended Regulations. COURSES OFFERED: The College offers three years Honours courses and three years General/ Pass courses for the degree of B.A. All these courses are affiliated to the University of North Bengal and approved by the Council for Higher Education, Govt. of W.B. and the U.G.C. All students of Higher Secondary (Vocational) Courses (10+2 levels) will be treated as equivalent with the curriculum and syllabus of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) w.e.f. the session Such students shall be admitted only in the 1st year General Courses of B.A. COURSE DETAILS: Honours Courses are available in Nepali, English, Political Science and History. Elective subjects are offered in History, Political Science, Elective Nepali, Elective English, Philosophy & Education (on self study basis). Students are required to opt three elective subjects out of these. Major Indian Languages are available in Nepali, Alternative English & Bengali (on self study basis). Students are required to opt one of these in Part- I, Compulsory English in Part-II and Envirolmental Studies in Part-III. However- (1) No candidate shall be allowed to take up more than one of the given language subjects as elective : (a) English (b) Bengali (c)nepali and such other subjects as may be introduced by the College/ University from time to time. (2) A candidate pursuing Honours in a subject shall not be allowed to take up the same subject as elective. (3) A candidate pursuing Honours in a Language subject shall not be allowed to take up another Language subject as elective. 1. A student may be admitted to B.A. Three Years Degree Course (General/ Honours) after passing the Higher Secondary Examination in the general stream conducted by the

3 West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education in (10+2) pattern after a period of 12 years of study or an examination recognized as equivalent by the University provided he/she has passed in at least four subjects with English as compulsory subject and excluding Environmental studies as other subject, provided that the students who have Passed 10+2 examination before 2007 shall be admitted in terms of pre amended Regulations. A candidate shall be allowed to pursue B.A. in General Course if he/she has passed the qualifying examinations in vocational stream subject to clause 1 above. 2. (a) No candidate shall be allowed to take up more than one of the following as Elective Subjects, except a candidate who has converted from Honours to General Course: English, Bengali, Nepali and such other subjects as may be introduced by the University from time to time. (b) A candidate pursuing Honours in a subject shall not be allowed to study the same subject as elective. 3. Those candidates who would obtain either (i) 55% marks in the aggregate or (ii) 50% in the aggregate with 60% marks in the subject in the qualifying examination shall be eligible to apply for admission to Honours course in the subject concerned. Admission to course shall be subject to availability of seats and based on merit. Provided in case of SC/ ST candidates, the minimum marks for eligibility shall be (i) 50% marks in the aggregate or (ii) 45% in the aggregate with 60% in the subjects for admission to Honours course in the subjects concerned. 4. (a) After admission in First Year Degree Classes in the B.A. (Part I/II/III/) Degree Course ( Honours/ General) a student shall have to pursue a regular course of study for a period of one academic session / year in 1st Year Class for being eligible to appear in the B.A. Part I (Honours/ General) Examination another session/ year of study in 2nd Year Class (after qualifying the Part I Examination) for being eligible to appear in the B.A. Part II (Honours/ General) Examination and finally another session/ year of study in 3rd Year Class (after qualifying the Part II Examination) for being eligible to appear in the B.A. Part III (Honours/ General) Examination. A regular course of study shall mean attendance in at least 75% of the classes actually held in the session/ year. (b) In case of admission on transfer, which shall not be permitted other than in First Year of Degree Classes (Honours & General), a student must opt for the same subjects as he/ she studied in the previous college. (c) No subject change will be allowed during filling up of examination forms & the subject chosen by each student should be strictly adhered to, as per Registration form sent to the University. 5. (a) A student shall have to opt for the following subjects at the B.A. (General) Part I Examination: i) One compulsory paper of any one of the following languages carrying 150 marks: Bengali, Nepali & Alternative English.

4 ii) Three elective subjects each carrying 150 marks (both theory and practical papers, wherever relevant) consisting of three halves/papers. (b) A student shall have to opt for the following subjects at the B.A. (General) Part II Examination: i) One compulsory paper of English carrying 50 marks. ii) Corresponding three elective subjects of Part I Examination each carrying 150 marks consisting of halves/papers. (c) A student shall have to opt for the following subjects at the B.A. (General) Part III Examination: i) One compulsory paper of Environmental Studies carrying 50 marks ii) Corresponding three elective subjects of Part Examination carrying 300 marks. (d) Thus, Part I (500 marks), Part II (500 marks) and Part III (350 marks) altogether shall carry 1350 marks of B.A. (General) Three Years Degree Course Examination. 6. (a) B.A. (Hons.) Part I Examination shall consist of the following papers: i) Elective subjects each carrying 150 marks consisting of three halves/papers. ii) One compulsory paper of any one of the following languages carrying 50 marks: Bengali, Nepali, Alternative English. iii) One Honours subject of 200 marks consisting of two Theory/ Practical papers. (b) B.A. (Hons.) Part II Examination shall consist of following papers: i) Elective subject each corresponding of Part I Examination each carrying 150 marks consisting of three halves/ papers. ii) One compulsory paper of English language carrying 50 marks. iii) One Honours subjects of 200 marks corresponding to Part I and consisting of two Theory/ Practical papers. (c) B.A. (Hons) Part III Examination: A student shall have to opt for the following subjects: i) One Compulsory paper of Environmental studies carrying 50 marks. ii) One Honours subjects corresponding to Part II Examination of 400 marks consisting of Theoretical/ Practical Papers. The students who have been awarded QH in Part- I/II Examination under system are not eligible to drop Honours and appear in Part- II/III Examination under General category. The candidate awarded QH in Part-I/II Examination are to appear in Part- II/III Examination of same standard. The college from this academic year has also been inducted as a unit of 5 Bengal N.C.C and hence students (both boys and girls) are encouraged to enroll themselves as N.C.C cadets.

6 COLLEGE RULES & REGULATIONS Keeping in view the aims and objectives to impart quality education, the students who are admitted to this College are to abide by its rules and regulations : 75% attendance is absolutely necessary. Every student shall have to attend at least 75% of the classes held in a year / session to sit for University examination (Part I/II/III). All students must conduct themselves in a good manner both in and outside the college. The students concerned must pay for damage to any kind of college property. Smoking or the use of alcohol and drugs in the college premises is strictly forbidden. Students are not called to the college telephone although urgent incoming messages may be delivered to the student concerned. Mobile phones should not be used in the classrooms and in the exam halls. Students are required to carry with them their Identity Card bearing their photographs. Identiti Cards without photographs, college seal and signature of the Principal will not be valid. No change of subjects shall be granted after the filling the Registration Forms of the University of North Bengal. Every student must come to the college everyday in the proper COLLEGE UNIFORM as prescribed by the college. IMPORTANT DATES (According to the University of North Bengal Admission Circular) 27 th May Online Registrations begin for the Admissions. 24 th June Online Registrations close for the Provisional Merit Lists 25 th June Publication of Merit Lists 27 th June Admissions to the College begins for eligible students whose names feature in the Merit Lists. INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS 1. Log on to the college website after the 27 th of May 2016 and fill up their details in the admission section. 2. Get a print out of the Bank Challan to pay the Registration Fees of Rs.200/ at the State Bank of India, Sonada branch and SUBMIT the COLLEGE copy in the college at the CASHIER S COUNTER.

7 3. Come to the College on the 25 th of June to find out whether their name feature in the Provisional Merit List. 4. Contact the Admission Help Desk in the College if their name is in the Provisional Merit List The college has also set up a HELP DESK in the college to assist the students in filling the online Registration Forms.
