Systematic organization of such programmes presupposes the availability of well trained special educators. In order to have well qualified special educators, there should be special teacher training programmes at B.Ed and M.Ed levels. The prevalence rate of mental retardation is estimated to be 2-% of the population. Right now these children are studying in special schools, special class in regular schools, integrated schools, inclusive education set up and programmes in Community based setting. In order to meet the varied special educational and training needs of this huge number of individuals, we need thousands of special teachers. As an emerging discipline, Special Education needs a lot of masters and researchers too. Nirmala Sadan is an Institute dedicated for the Education, Research and Rehabilitation of Persons with Mental Retardation. The training college for Special Education is recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India, New Delhi and affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University Kottayam. As part of the teacher training Programme Nirmala Sadan offers one year M.Ed Special Education (Mental Retardation) COURSE AND ITS GENERAL OBJECTIVES M.Ed Special Education. (Mental Retardation) is a course affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University and approved by Rehabilitation Council of India. Special Education is an emerging field with the Human Resource requirement having increased in the past years. As persons with disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and full participation) Act 1995 provides for education as right of every child with disability, the role of special educators has further been emphasized. On completion of the M.Ed Special Education (Mental Retardation) course, the teacher can function as Master trainer to teach Special Educators undergoing training in certificate, Diploma and Graduation levels in Special Education (Mental Retardation). Can assume the role of researchers, leaders, capacity builders developers and catalysts in the area of Special Education (Mental retardation). Eligibility for Admission: The admission for the degree of M. Ed Special Education (Mental retardation) shall be open to: a) b) A candidate who has successfully completed B. Ed Special Education (Mental Retardation) with a minimum of 55% marks from Mahatma Gandhi University or equivalent. SC/ST Candidates need only a minimum pass in the qualifying examination, SEBC candidates and OEC candidates will be given % and 5% concession in aggregate marks respectively. In the absence of candidates with B. Ed special education (MR) candidate who has successfully passed the B. Ed (General) course and has successfully completed a Diploma Course in Special Education (MR) not less than one-year duration recognized by the RCI with minimum 55% marks in each course will be considered c) B. Ed in multi category specializations shall not be an eligibility for M. Ed Special Education (Mental Retardation) programme.

3 Number of seats The total number of seats will be 10 Reservation of seats 50% - of seats are under management, provided they satisfy eligibility condition prescribed by the university. Of the remaining seats 65% shall be filled on general merits and 5% shall be filled by candidates belonging SC/ST and other backward communities. Award of certificates M.Ed Special Education (Mental Retardation) issued by Mahatma Gandhi University. Duration of the course. One academic year as per Mahatma Gandhi University calendar. 4 FEES The rates of fee will be charged as prescribed by Mahatma Gandhi University Kottayam and Nirmala Sadan. Presently the rates of Fee are as follows: 1. Tuition fee : Rs /- Per semester 2. SPECIAL FEES : Rs. 500/- per semester. Students Affiliation Fee : Rs. 50/- per year 4. University Union Fee : Rs. 0/- per year 5. Students' Welfare Fund : Rs. 10/- per year 6. Students' Insurance Premium : Rs. 10/-per year 7. Caution Deposit : Rs. 1000/- per year 8. Sports affiliation fee : Rs. 150/- per year 9. Examination fees (as prescribed : by the University) : Hostel Accommodation Hostel accommodation will be provided to out station candidates on request on first come first basis. The following documents should be attached with the application. 1. Attested photocopy of S.S.L.C book to prove date of birth. 2. Attested photocopy of mark list of all parts of qualifying examination. (Application with out attested copies of all mark lists will be summarily rejected.). Attested photocopy of degree certificate of qualifying examination 4. Attested photocopy of certificate from competent authority in support of special reservation (SC/ST/ OEC/ SEBC) 5. Conduct certificate from Head of the Institution last attended. (In original). 6. Copy of the equivalency/ Eligibility certificate stating that the qualifying examination is recognized by M.G University for seeking admission to M.Ed Special Education (MR)course. (For those who have passed qualifying examination from other Universities/ institutions out side of the State). Discipline The candidates admitted shall be subjected to strict discipline inside and outside the campus and also in the hostel where accommodation is provided. The candidates are expected to maintain decorum, decency and discipline throughout their pursuance of the course with the staff, faculty and other supporting workers. The hostlers should follow the prescribed rules in the hostel. Infringement or violation of rules shall result in rustication from the hostel for period as decided by the management of the institute. Use of mobile phones, cinematic dances and fashion show in the campus is strictly prohibited Ragging is a crime prohibited under law. Any one found indulging in the act of ragging will be punished by management and the law enforcing authorities.
