RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Pilot Study: Factors Influencing Substance Use Among African American Emerging Adults: A Preliminary Study. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), February 2009-May Co-Principal Investigator with Dr. Cynthia Troutman (UAPB) This research was internally funded through the Graduate Addiction Studies program. It utilized social learning theory in examining factors associated with drug use among young African American adults age years, inclusive. The purposes of this preliminary research study were: 1) to determine whether persons emotionally close to participants, such as friends and family, used drugs in their presence; and 2) if so, their reaction to the drug use; 3) to explore participants attitude toward drug use; and 4) to explore parental, sibling, and friend attitudes toward participant drug use. The results of this preliminary study will be used to strengthen an upcoming (June, 2010) Minority Institutions' Drug Abuse Research Development Program (MIDARP) grant application. If funded, pilot study results will also be used to construct an age and culturally appropriate quantitative survey which will subsequently be administered to a group of African American emerging adults those age 18 to 25 years to determine the factors associated with their drug use. Ph.D. Dissertation Research: Retirement Planning Among Baby Boomers: Do Role Clarity and Internal Locus of Control Make a Difference? The University of Iowa, August 1999 May 2006 This research was supported through a competitive grant provided by the John A. Hartford Foundation. It utilized an interdisciplinary approach to retirement planning, blending theoretical perspectives from sociology and psychology. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the retirement planning of baby boomers using major concepts from role theory and social learning theory that had not been previously considered in relation to retirement planning: role clarity and locus of control. Future

3 research will include studies of participants following their retirement. Supervisor: Dr. Lorraine T. Dorfman, School of Social Work. Masters (MSW) Research: Domestic Violence: A Comparison of Two Cultures. The University of Iowa, Des Moines, August 1995 May 1999 Conducted a domestic violence study on St. Lucia, West Indies. The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence, types, and severity of domestic violence in a Caribbean culture and compare and contrast with domestic violence in the American culture. Graduate Research Assistantships Geriatric Enrichment in Social Work Education. The University of Iowa, School of Social Work, This research was funded by a John A. Hartford Foundation Geriatric Enrichment in Social Work Education grant. The project examined the effects of infusing gerontological content into all social work core curriculum courses on student s pre- and post-test attitudes toward elders and working with elders, and on their gerontological knowledge and skills. It also included outcomes from involved faculty and community partners. Major responsibilities included the collection, maintenance, and statistical evaluation of quantitative and qualitative data. Other responsibilities included manuscript development and supervising research assistants. Supervisors: Drs. Lorraine Dorfman and Susan Murty, School of Social Work. The Impact of Elder Abuse Legislation on Rates of Investigated and Substantiated Domestic Elder Abuse in All 50 States and the District of Columbia. The University of Iowa, College of Medicine, This research was funded through a competitive grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Major responsibilities included data collection, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, and manuscript preparation. Supervisors: Drs. Gerald Jogerst and Jeanette Daly, Department of Family Medicine. Intergenerational Service-learning in a Rural Underserved Community. The University of Iowa, School of Social Work, This research was funded by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. The study examined student s pre- and post-test attitudes toward: 1) elders; 2) working with elders; and 3) communities. The study included an intergenerational service-learning component in which oral histories of rural elders were collected. Major responsibilities included the collection, maintenance, and statistical evaluation of quantitative and qualitative data. Other responsibilities included manuscript development. Supervisors: Drs. Lorraine Dorfman and Susan Murty, School of Social Work.

4 Substance Abuse Treatment. The University of Iowa, School of Social Work, Worked on various research projects focusing on substance abuse treatment. Major responsibilities included quantitative data analysis, preparing manuscripts for publication, and identifying suitable journals for manuscript submission. TEACHING EXPERIENCE Graduate Teaching Assistantships Basic Aspects of Aging, The University of Iowa, Aging Studies Program, August December: 2001 May 2006 Supported the teaching of an introductory gerontology course by preparing and delivering lectures, preparing and grading exams, and advising undergraduate and graduate students during office hours. Course Supervisors: Drs. Lorraine Dorfman and Richard MacNeil. Aging Studies Colloquium, The University of Iowa, Aging Studies Program, January May: This course exposed students to current research and issues relevant to the broad field of aging studies/gerontology by utilizing guest speakers and videos. As sole instructor, I led class discussions regarding introduced topics, graded reflective journals and papers, and advised students during office hours. Course supervisor: Dr. Richard MacNeil. Advanced Social Work Research Methods, The University of Iowa, School of Social Work, January 2005 May 2005 This course is the second of two required research courses for students in the master s degree program. This course builds on the knowledge and skills developed in the introductory class by teaching student how to carry out a research project relevant to social work and how to analyze data. Major responsibilities included instruction in data analysis, grading assignments, assisting students with their research projects, and advising students during office hours. Course supervisor: Dr. James Hall Social Work Research Methods, The University of Iowa, School of Social Work, August 2004 December 2004 This course is the first of two required research courses for students in the master s degree program. This course includes knowledge and skills to evaluate practice and carry out social work research. Content areas include formulating research questions, research design and methodology, sampling techniques, protection of human subjects, descriptive statistics, and computerized data analysis.
