1 KAREN I. FREDRIKSEN-GOLDSEN, PH.D. Dr. Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen is the Director of the Institute for Multigenerational Health, Development and Equality and is an Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of Washington. Dr. Fredriksen-Goldsen s research has received national recognition and she has published extensively on intergenerational caregiving, work and family, multigenerational relations, and family care within lesbian and gay families. Her co-authored book with Andrew Scharlach, Families and Work: New Directions in the Twenty-First Century published by Oxford University Press, has been well received as one of the most comprehensive studies to date of employment and family care responsibilities across the lifespan. She received the Outstanding Research Award by the Society for Social Work and Research. Currently Dr. Fredriksen-Goldsen is conducting a nationally funded six-year research project on AIDS and caregiving, examining the relationship between formal and informal systems of care. She and colleagues recently completed a forthcoming book, Looking Back, Looking Forward: The Lives of Lesbian Elders, examining their experiences and resilience in terms of coming out, family life, adversity, work and aging. Locally, nationally and internationally, Dr. Fredriksen-Goldsen has provided consultation and training on education and empowerment practice within lesbian and gay communities. She received a B.A. in Society & Justice and a M.S.W. in Social Work from the University of Washington, and a Ph.D. in Social Welfare from the University of California at Berkeley. 1
