2 WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY When I tell you the University of Sydney is a superb place to learn and grow, I m not just speaking as its Vice-Chancellor. I m also talking as a parent my own children study here and I am a former student myself. The University has changed a lot in the 30 years since I studied here, but its finest qualities remain and these qualities are what drew me back. Two of them stand out. First, our unashamed devotion to excellence in service to the community. We make things happen; we make lives better. Ranked among the top one percent of universities worldwide, * we are one of the country s biggest recipients of research funding. Our academics and students are changing the world for the better by developing cleaner fuels, fighting chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes and shaping public policy to help those in need. And that s just touching the surface. Second is the vision we were built on: that education should be accessible to all students of promise, regardless of their background. It s a principle encoded into the very DNA of this university and reflected by our vibrant community of 50,000 students, including more than 10,000 international students from 145 countries. I invite you to visit us, discover our courses, meet our amazing people and, most importantly, begin to discover what you can do with your own potential. University life is what you make it. With such an array of opportunities available to you on and off campus, there s always something to do. 6

9 I was part of the University of Sydney s student-run racing team (FSAE), and used the engineering skills I learned in class to help build a car that raced in a national university competition. Building the car taught me valuable skills that I was also able to apply in the workforce when I completed my internships. They included one with Australian company Pandrol. LETICIA LUIZ BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (MECHANICAL) NSW INTERNATIONAL STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2013 When Leticia Luiz came to Sydney from Brazil, she says it was a bit of a culture shock. Having never travelled overseas before, it was the first time she d experienced a culture and language so different from her own. However, Leticia admits that taking the step to travel more than 13,000 kilometres to a completely new environment has been one of the best decisions of her life. I wanted to learn English and study at an internationally recognised Australian uni, so the University of Sydney was the obvious choice. She says that her self-confidence, English and personal and professional skills developed quickly and that much of this was due to getting involved in some of the many extracurricular activities available at the University. Leticia also got involved with the public speaking club Toastmasters, and in doing so won three Australian public speaking contests, made new friends and improved her English at the same time. Leticia was awarded the NSW International Student of the Year Award in To be nominated, international students need to demonstrate how their achievements add value to their community. The judges said Leticia received the award because of her exemplary project management and leadership skills, and her encouragement of cross-cultural communication among international students. Her advice to other international students? Sydney is a beautiful, multicultural city. If you re thinking of studying at the University of Sydney, my advice is to get out of your comfort zone and just go. sydney.edu.au 7

I m looking forward to studying the learning process and becoming a great teacher. JESSE SMITH BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (PRIMARY) sydney.edu.au/education-social-work What can I study? 21

26 HEALTH SCIENCES The Faculty of Health Sciences is a world leader in health sciences and allied health research and education. Our reputation for excellence stems from the pioneering research of our academics and the many achievements of our 18,000 alumni working globally. As part of a Faculty of Health Sciences initiative, I got to experience Nepal in my undergraduate degree. I volunteered in Kathmandu for a month, working with children with cerebral palsy. WAYNE OU BACHELOR OF APPLIED SCIENCE (EXERCISE AND SPORTS SCIENCE) MASTER OF PHYSIOTHERAPHY Our faculty staff are experts in seven key disciplines: behavioural and social sciences, exercise and sport science, medical radiation sciences, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation counselling and speech pathology. Their pioneering work, of which you can be a part, is internationally renowned. We are making real changes to health care for individuals, families and communities worldwide. For example, one of our speech pathology experts developed a world-first treatment for stuttering in children that is now used globally. Another researcher is working on ways to alleviate the painful, long-term musculoskeletal problems experienced by many cancer survivors. We offer you the choice of profession-specific study, or a broad degree tailored to your particular interests. Either way, you will be thoroughly prepared for one of the many roles in health anywhere in the world. A Bachelor of Health Sciences degree gives you a thorough understanding of health systems and the dynamics of public health policy and administration, providing you with the knowledge and skills to pursue a corporate career in health. Our courses vigorously test and enhance our students abilities. You have the opportunity to develop fundamental knowledge and skills in the health profession of your choice whether it be physiotherapy, speech pathology, occupational therapy, exercise physiology, rehabilitation counselling or diagnostic radiography. Our programs include clinical placements and exposure to current professional practice. In addition, our close collaboration with hospitals, government agencies, schools, community health centres, private health agencies and private practices, ensures that you will take part in real-world learning. YOUR FUTURE The number of health industry professionals has increased by more than 40 percent in the past decade and they play a large role in tackling the rise in chronic health conditions. As a result there is a growing need for graduates in health sciences. With one of our professional preparation courses, you can put your skills into practice immediately after graduating. Alternatively, a Bachelor of Health Sciences gives you a number of other career options including non-clinical corporate roles in health. sydney.edu.au/health-sciences 24 What can I study?
