Abstract The purpose of this proposal is to identify and determine the relative importance of both technical and non-technical skills for entry-level employees in the IT field. To do so, the PI and Co-PIs will design and administer an online survey to IT managers and supervisors in industry and ask them to rate skills according to importance for entry-level IT workers. The survey will have additional sections to collect demographic data as well as to inquire about current IT practices and the IT infrastructure of the organization. The results of the survey will be used to align the skills and knowledge taught in the CIT IT-related degree programs with those considered important by industry. The results of the study will be disseminated via journal publications, conference presentations, proceedings publications and to the CIT through the Business and IT Seminar (BITS) series. The results will provide a basis for a grant from an agency such as the NSF. Butler, Eulous Sonny (Principal), Aasheim, Cheryl (Supporting), Grant, "Faculty Research Grant," Georgia Southern University, $3, (February 1, March 31, 2006). Abstract As information technology advances, the knowledge and skills required of graduates working in the IT field changes as well. As IT educators, we need to understand what skills are in demand and incorporate them into our curriculum quickly. Unfortunately, many current research efforts have reported a gap between what is taught in IT departments at colleges and universities and what industry is demanding. These previous research efforts highlight the need for an evaluation of what we are currently teaching in light of the skills industry identifies as important. In order to identify skills industry is seeking, we need feedback from IT employers. We have designed a survey to administer to potential employers to obtain their valuable feedback. We will use the data collected from this survey to (1) identify the skills that employers value, (2) modify our curriculum to reflect these skills, and (3) reconcile the skill sets identified by employers with those identified by the IT model curriculum ( developed by SIGITE (Special Interest Group for IT Education) and

7 the IT accrediting body, ABET ( Our study will assist the University, College, and the Department of Information Technology in identifying employers for our students, the demand for various IT skills, the geographic locations of the IT market, and potential new areas for the College to focus on to meet the demands of industry. We plan to share the results of our findings by publishing articles in nationally recognized journals and presenting our findings at conferences and seminars.
