1 Southern Pro Am Truck Series Rules - Update 4/15/2016 It is free to become a Southern Pro Am Truck Series member, you can pre-register online at or register at a Southern Pro Am Truck Series race. Series oval track race event entry fees are $50. FARA/FT-1 events are $200. General Rules Competitors, members and non-members are responsible for the actions of themselves, crew members, family and friends. Anyone who is deemed to have crossed the line in conduct, abuse toward a series official, other driver, owner or crew will be disqualified or suspended. Series manager will make the ruling on disqualifications or suspensions and it will be communicated to the person deemed to have violated. You may not consume any alcoholic beverages before or during any series racing event; that includes all areas of the race track. If you are caught drinking at a series event, you will be suspended from the series. If you behave in an unprofessional manner, you and your truck can be disqualified. Disqualification, suspensions or fines can be given as well. Due to the limited space of the racetrack and safety of officials, fans and track workers, "VICTORY DONUTS", "BURNOUTS", or post-race celebrations with vehicles or reckless driving will not be allowed and will result in disqualification and sanctions. Please keep control of and keep speed to 5 mph on any vehicles in the pits including truck, four-wheelers, etc... Pro truck teams can pre-register for a series race event at Point System and Payouts: TBD Good to Know: For all series race events: If a driver pays their Series registration race fee at the track and the Series race becomes rained out, driver's entry fee will be applied to the driver's entry fee for the next scheduled Series race. If driver fails to attend the next scheduled Series race, their entry will not be returned, and their entry fee will be applied to the total payout of that race. All entry fees paid are nonrefundable. No exceptions. Protests 1. You must be a Series member to protest and must finish the race on the lead lap. 2. Protests must be made in writing specifying the rule(s) considered to have been violated. Protest forms will be available at all Series races (see Series official) 3. All protests must be filed no more than 10 minutes after a race ends. 4. Protest must be specific to one Series rule, no more than 2 rule protests are allowed. 5. All protest fees must be paid in cash. 6. Only the protested truck s owner or driver, two crew, the protesting driver or owner who competed in the race, 1 crew member and series officials in the tech area for the protest. 7. More than one driver may protest any one truck if they meet the protest time and fee procedure, and the specific rule they are protesting. 8. Visual protests are to be honored any time before the race and does not have to be in written form, but need to be brought to tech or series official. The infraction must be either corrected or tech may use a weight penalty for that race if not able to fix that day. Amount of weight is at the tech official s discretion. 9. Excessive protesting will not be tolerated and can result in disqualification, loss of points and possible fine. Series officials will determine this. 10. Do not remove or alter any casting or part numbers. 11. Confiscation Series official s reserve the right to retain or confiscate any illegal part or parts and engine on any racing vehicle at any time it is deemed in violation or question. Retained or confiscated parts will be returned to driver/owner after the 2016 Series season is complete. 12. Tech reserves the right to check any truck in the field at any time, in any finishing order if he chooses to. They must conform to rules, or face disqualification. 13. Open Motors - Teardown is $500 for intake and heads removal. $1000 for complete engine teardown and inspection 14. Claim on 602 engine (part # ) is $4200 Refusal to sell 602 engine will result in a disqualification of the night event. 1

2 Protest or Tech Tear-Down Refusal (includes engine, drive train etc.) 1. Any truck owner/driver refusing any protest or tear down for any reason will lose all money, points, awards, trophies earned for that race date, and be penalized -50 points. 2. At the next race, any protested truck may be inspected by Series before or after the race. 3. If the owner/driver refuses a protest for the second time, the owner/driver will not earn points, be penalized -100 points, start in the rear of the race on the start and restarts and will lose the ability to earn points for the entire 2016 Series racing season. 4. Any protested truck, the owner/driver must have their truck inspected and approved at the Series track race event before they are allowed to race the main Series event. 5. If you are caught tampering with the 602 you will be banned from the series for a year. Qualifying Procedures 1. The driver that qualifies in the truck must start the race in that truck. If a driver change is made, the truck must start at tail of the field. 2. The tires you qualify with must be the tires you race on. If a qualifying tire goes flat, you may change the tire with a Series official s approval. 3. Tech will decide how many to tech after qualifying. This does not have to be announced prior to qualifying. 4. A driver late for qualifying without having notified a series official will receive only 1 lap of time. Normal Qualifying will be two laps of time. 5. In the event of a tie in qualifying the driver who qualified first will get the pole position. 6. You may tape up for qualifying. 7. In the event that rain cancels qualifying, the lineup will be according to points. Those without points will be placed in the order they paid their entry fee. Race Procedures 1. Starts will be side by side at a designated spot given at the driver s meeting at each track; the flagman starts the race. 2. No passes to the inside until you have crossed the start finish line. 3. If a driver causes a false start, the second time the driver will be sent to the rear. 4. When a caution is displayed lineup is determined by the last lap completed scoring. 5. On Restarts: No passing to inside until you have passed the restart line. 6. If you go to outside before green is displayed you are jumping, you will be penalized spots per truck jumped at next caution or at end of the race. If you realize it and give the spot back you will not be penalized. 7. Races will be 50 green flag laps unless otherwise announced at an event. We must complete 25 laps for race to be official. 8. When caution is displayed remain in single file order. If unsure of spot pull to outside of questioned spot officials will check and place you where you go. 9. The Truck(s) that cause the caution will go to the rear. Judgment calls will be made if it is clear, otherwise both to the rear. If you stop on the track to bring out the caution and we feel it was intentional, you will be penalized 1 lap. Truck(s) at fault may go to the rear by tapping the roof. 10. NO track or series officials can work on your truck for any reason except a safety issue. You must go to the pits for work. 11. If you have a flat, Series will give you 2 laps from the time you get in your pit. 12. Due to the limited space of the racetrack and safety of officials, fans and track workers, "VICTORY DONUTS", "BURNOUTS", or post-race celebrations with vehicles or reckless driving will not be allowed and will result in disqualification and sanctions. Driver Safety Rules 1. You must have proper rated 2008 or newer Snell approved helmet. 2. A type of head and neck restraint is mandatory! 3. Complete fire suits, gloves and shoes are mandatory. Must be in good shape no holes etc. 4. Driver s window net must have quick release, with latch at top left. Cannot be a string type window net and must be 22 wide and 16 high. When latched must fit tight. 5. Commercially made aluminum racing seats with rubber pads mandatory. Dual right and left side head restraints are highly recommended. 2

3 6. Safety Harness five point minimum must be no older than five years old. 7. Proper resilient padding for roll bar use must be installed on roll cage around driver. 8. Steering wheel must be padded. 9. Fully Charged fire extinguisher mandatory. On-board fire system is highly recommended. 10. A battery disconnect switch is mandatory and must be easily accessible to the safety crew and driver, must be clearly marked with on and off and be readable by safety crew outside the truck. 11. Series recommends having a spotter for each truck and a scanner for race control. You will get the track s frequency from the track. 12. No truck to truck radios. 13. Due to the limited space of the racetrack and safety of officials, fans and track workers, "VICTORY DONUTS", "BURNOUTS", or post-race celebrations with vehicles or reckless driving will not be allowed and will result in disqualification and sanctions. Truck Safety Rules 1. Drive shaft loops are mandatory within 12 of the ends. 2. Exhaust exiting door must be flush, not extending past the body. 3. No antifreeze allowed to be run. 4. Battery and connection must be minimum 18 away from fuel cell. 5. Roll cages must be built of 1 ¾.095 thickness tubing minimum. 6. Cages must be attached properly in at least 8 spots on the chassis. 7. Minimum of 4 door bars on the left side, plated with 1/8 inch steel. 8. All roll bars around driver must be padded. 9. All joints must be welded properly, no cracks or gaps. 10. Fuel cell must be between frame rails. Maximum 22 gal. 11. Must have a check valve. 12. Fuel cell minimum ground clearance Fuel cell protection bar mandatory, minimum of thickness tubing. 14. Fuel cell must have minimum of 2 straps, 1 wide surrounding entire fuel cell. 15. No fuel cooling / altering devices allowed, Fuel must go straight from cell to carburetor. 16. No electric fuel pumps. 17. No fuel additives, Fuel can be tested at any time. 18. All weight added on truck must be bolted in with minimum ½ bolts, with locking nuts; Minimum of two bolts per 50 lbs. weight. Minimum 5 lbs. blocks. 19. All weights must be painted white, and have truck number on them. 20. No weights allowed inside the driver compartment. 21. Southern Pro Am Pro Truck Series Tech Rules If you do not understand the rules, please be sure to contact the series or ask a series official for clarification. Not understanding the rules is not an excuse to break them. The word stock (used within the rules) means as originally produced by the manufacturer for that make/model/year of the car/truck. It is stock with no altering or modifications. Aftermarket parts must be same dimensions, weight, and/or volume as the OEM part. Determination of whether anything is legal will be the tech and series director s decision. NO Carbon Fiber or titanium permitted anywhere in the truck. NO Bump stops. No Traction control devices of any kind allowed. If the rules do not say you can, please check with the series tech. Assumptions are not allowed. Chassis 1. GM Metric frame may be used, fabricated frames, clips and replacement frames are allowed. Any fabricated frame must fit their XYG jig before entering the track surface. The XYG inspection grid will be in use to ensure that the tubular replacement pickup points are Stock. The grid is a go/no go gauge for all the suspension pick up points. 2. Must be original 108 wheelbase and be the same measurement on both sides, half inch tolerance. 3

4 3. Track width 64 front and rear, measures from center to center. Spacers permitted, no more than 64 inches. 4. Chassis must remain stock unless otherwise specifically noted in rules. 5. Frame may be fabricated from 6 forward of the centerline of the rear axle and from front sway bar forward. 6. Frame can be X d 7. Cross member must remain stock and in stock location, it may be notched for oil pan clearance only. Must be boxed with 1/8 inch steel. 8. All pick up points must remain stock in stock locations. Front Lower arms and rear trailing arms. 9. No modifications to arms, holes, no drilling and lightening allowed. Suspension + GM frame: Members may install a fabricated front clip to a truck that has been damaged. All trucks will be subjected to the XYG jig chassis checker. The XYG fixture will be used to inspect all trucks at any event at any time before or after any event ++ Front suspension components must remain stock dimensions for that make and model frame an aftermarket lower a frame maybe install but will also be subjected to the XYG jig +++ Front springs will be no less than 500 pound minimum. 1. Front suspension components must remain stock, unless otherwise noted in another rule. 2. Heavy-duty steel aftermarket hubs & rotors are required on the right front wheel. 3. Springs must mount in stock location. Top of frame may be changed to add wedge bolts or to allow for spring removal. 4. Shocks must be mounted directly to the lower A arm. 5. Pitman arm and steering arm may be changed, aftermarket center link is permitted. 6. Stock inner tie rod, Outer tie rod may be a heim joint. 7. Lower control arms must be stock or stock dimensions aftermarket replacement. 8. Stock or screw on style ball joints ok. 9. Coil spring rubber inserts are permitted, no leaf springs or torsion bars permitted. 10. Steel, poly or monoball bushings ok, no offset or eccentric bushings. 11. Sway bar must be 1 1/2 maximum diameter. 12. No rear Panard or sway bars 13. Only 1 shock per wheel permitted. All shocks must be steel non-adjustable. Maximum of $ per shock. Internal parts must remain as purchased in a $ shock. Adjustable shafts and canisters are not permitted. Rear mount location optional on the rear axle. Shocks can be claimed for $150 each. Refusal to sell is a DQ, loss of money and points and a $200 fine. Series tech can DQ truck for shocks if they exceed the $ value as well and can be confiscated. 14. Steering: Stock OEM steering box in stock location. Universal joints, up to three, can be put on steering shaft as well as heim joints. Aftermarket power steering kits or steering quickener kits ok. Must be driven off the crankshaft. 15. Spindles, bearings and hubs, Stock HD steel or aluminum aftermarket hubs. Spindle savers are recommended. Steering arms must be same length on right and left. 16. Distance between the centers of the bolts on the rear upper trailing arms should be no less than 10 ¼. 17. Due to the unavailability of stock rear control arms, steel hiem & swedge tubes will be allowed. 108" wheel base NO TOLERANCE. Body 1. Please contact SPATS to receive a copy of the body template. 2. Approved Series Truck body manufacturers are: ARP, Speedway Racing Bodies, Lightning Lite, Five Star. May make own aluminum body pieces, but must be approved by series, and fit templates. 3. Series approved bodies are: Chevy C-10, Ford F150, 1997 Dodge Ram d. Body must be entered in the center of the frame with wheels in center of wheel wells with 2 tolerance. All body parts must be attached firmly to cage or frame and is subject to approval. 4

5 4. Body ground clearance is a minimum of 4 inches measured anywhere. 5. All body support brackets must be solid and located inside the body structure. 6. Nose Width is 81 max. 7. Front air dams must maintain their original configuration. 8. Maximum rake for roof is Minimum side window opening must be at least Front and rear windows must be full 1/8 lexan. 11. Front windshield brace is mandatory, 35 degree angle on windshield 5 degree tolerance. 12. Both side windows may have 1/8 lexan vents only, 9 high, 12 length max. 13. Hoods to remain stock with the following changes allowed: An opening of 2.5 x 20 may be cut in the rear of the hood, centered behind air filter which will allow air intake. A 1.5 x 1.5 X 20 heat deflector may be installed on the fire wall at this opening. 14. Rear Deck lids are mandatory, must be able to open for technical inspections. 15. Rear deck lids can be fiberglass, sheet metal or aluminum. Must be flat and flush with quarter panels x 60 solid rear spoiler is mandatory. May have approved braces front side or back side, not on both sides. 55 Degree Minimum angle. Homestead and Sebring ill have different rules for spoiler. 17. Stock rear bumper cover is mandatory. Must be complete and unmodified. Must have full 90 degree flap on the bottom edge, no cutting. 18. Rear deck height minimum 36, max 40. ***different from body template sheet. Interior 1. Vehicle interior must be complete and shield driver from the ground, engine compartment and fuel cell area. 2. Floors must be steel and the rest of the compartment can be from steel or aluminum, but must be fully enclosed and extend from left to right side of truck. 3. Truck must have a rear firewall of steel to separate driver from fuel tank. Firewall may be welded, riveted or bolted. 4. May have installed dash panels. Rear Ends 1. Rear differential housing must be stock steel bolt GM or 9 Ford housing. 2. Brackets for mounting trailing arms must be in stock location with stock mounts. 3. Rear spring perch must remain on the top of the axle tube. 4. Ring gear and pinion must be stock and mount directly in housing. 5. Only stock ring and pinion, off the shelf available gears allowed. No custom ground or lightened gears allowed. 6. C Clip eliminators are optional. 7. Welded spider gears and mini-spools ok. 8. Any stock fitting differential cover ok. 9. Moser 26 spline axle mandatory on the right side. 10. No posi-traction units or locker type rear spider. 11. Only stock steel/cast carrier allowed. 12. Solid steel axles only. 13. NO Aluminum Spools Tires and Wheels Durometer = no less than steel racing wheels with any offset, no wheel weights + or 1 inch tolerance. 2. Hubs must have 5/8 wheel studs. 3. Tires must be Series approved treaded 8 Hoosier and American Racer racing tires. 4. No bleeders s are the only Hoosier allowed in the Series. 6. The Series is an open Tire Series, meaning if you run American Racers or Hoosiers you will have to pass the tire durometer at 50. 5

6 Brakes 1. You must use GM stock single piston calipers, single piston Howe is allowed, must be steel. 2. All four brakes must be in full working condition. 3. Rear disc brakes are mandatory. 4. Rotors must be steel or cast iron and brake hats may be steel or aluminum. Transmission Option #1 1. Only GM Turbo 350, Ford C4 or C6, and Chrysler 904 or 727 automatic transmissions allowed with following exceptions. No drilling or lightening on the transmission or interior parts except the following items for oiling purposes. Front Planetary Reaction Gear per spec see tech for spec sheet. Sun shell cover (must be a solid stock type) may be drilled at back per spec see tech for spec sheet. (No big hole sun shells allowed). 2. Must have all forward and reverse gears working. No modifications. 3. GM Turbo 350 may use 2.75 low gear second gear option. No turbo 200/250 parts may be used in 350 transmissions. 4. Replacing thrust washers with bearings ok. 5. No aluminum or billet parts allowed in transmission. 6. Removal of Governor ok. 7. Manual shift valve body permitted. 8. Reverse shift pattern ok. 9. Torque convertor must be minimum diameter of 10 and working. 10. Transmission coolers with fans ok. All cooling lines must be steel braided with screw on fittings. 11. Safety Bell Housing and/or flex plate shield OK. 12. Solid output shafts only, no drilled, hollowed shafts. Hollowed shafts will not be allowed in 2013 series. 13. JW Transmissions, TCI Transmissions or others allowed as long as they meet these rules. 14. Drive shaft: Steel only, must be painted white with truck number on it. Option #2 1. Standard 3-speed or 4-speed OEM or OEM-style synchronized manual transmission with non-splined clusters allowed. 2. No 2-speed transmission will be permitted. 3. No gun-drilled main shafts. 4. No internal clutch-type transmissions allowed. Must have external clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel assembly. 5. Transmission must have at minimum two (2) forward and one (1) working reverse gear. 6. Two lever shifter or H-pattern shifter only. 7. No overdrive or under driven transmissions permitted. High gear must be 1 to 1 and no other gear may have a ratio higher than 1.20 to No Rankin-type or cluster-disconnect transmissions allowed. 9. All manual transmissions must have helical gears only. No straight-cut gears allowed. 10. No quick change type transmissions allowed. Clutch & Flywheel 1. Standard OEM or OEM-type clutch, pressure plate, steel flywheel, and throw-out bearing permitted. 2. Clutch discs and spacers must be steel. Multiple disc clutches with steel floaters and pressure plates permitted, minimum 7 ¼ inch in diameter. Solid magnetic steel clutches and pressure plates only. Clutches must be positive engagement design. Slider or slipper clutch designs are not permitted. No carbon fiber clutches. Clutches found not to meet this definition will be deemed illegal. Engines The engine that will be legal for Series competition will be the GM Performance 602 engine: Part number All other engines must be approved by a Series tech director or official prior to the race event and follow the weight rules listed under Weight (After Race) All 602 engines are subjected to be claimed by but not limited to the series or by a Series competitor competing in the race event. The Series competitor who is claiming an engine will have to finish on the lead lap. 6

7 1. GM part number 88958/ crate motor is legal for the Southern Pro Am Truck Series. 2. Must run all GM specs as delivered from the manufacturer. 3. Carburetor: For the GM crate engine only may run the Holley 650 HP four barrel only. 4. Carburetor: May run up to a one inch open hole spacer and all throttle linkages must have two return springs. 5. Ignition: Rev Limiter Chip operation will be at the tech inspector discretion. 6. Competitors will be responsible for proper rev limiter operation before and after the race Engines Built Type 1. See above A 2. Any questions/concerns regarding the legality of internal parts should be directed to the series tech director, prior to racing. 3. Series reserves the right to use weight to penalize violations, equal competition and will do so at their discretion with fairness in mind. Heads For all brands NON-CRATE: Only factory production, cast iron heads that are OEM for the engine type being used and that produce the factory specified volumes are permitted. 1. Minimum combustion chamber volumes: Chevy 52cc, Ford 52cc, and Dodge 56cc. 2. No porting, port matching, excessive decking beyond the chamber minimum volume, angle milling, chamber polishing, or grinding allowed. 3. Stainless steel valves are legal. 4. Three angle valve jobs allowed. 5. Any type guide material may be used. The valve guides must be in the stock factory location, angle, and spacing. 6. Valve springs must be of the stock type. No triple, conical, beehives, or progressive springs allowed. 7. Valve stems must be stock height only. 8. Retainers must be steel or chrome-molly steel only. Valve spring retainers must be stock type only. Plus or minus height retainers are allowed. 9. Valve spring keepers must be stock type only. Seven or ten degree locks may be used. No spring cups. 10. All heads must have visible and unaltered casting numbers. 11. A 602 engine must meet factory specs from GM Performance (this means valve springs, valves and retainers) Misc. Carburetor 1. Carburetor- Holley 4412,500 CFM with a maximum spacer/adapter between intake and carburetor. Changing of jets, power valve, drilling holes in butterflies permitted. 2. Choke horn may be removed. 3. Venturi area must not be altered or reshaped in any way. The casting ring may not be removed. Must remain as produced by the manufacturer. 4. Base plate must not be altered in any way. All openings must be permanently plugged. 5. No additional air to be picked up below the openings of the Venturi such as altered gaskets, base plate, or holes drilled into the carburetor. 6. Carburetor Booster: Booster type may not be changed. Booster size and shape must not be altered. Height and location of the booster must remain as manufactured. 7. Throttle shaft must remain stock and may not be thinned or cut in any manner. Screws may be flush with shaft. No other work to screws. 7

8 Air Cleaner 1. Air box optional 2. A round un-altered air cleaner element with a maximum diameter of fourteen (14) inches with a maximum height of four (4) inches is required. All air must be filtered thru this filter. 3. No duct work added to air cleaner. Fuel System 1. Fuel pump-stock mounted mechanical pump only, brand optional. 2. The fuel cell must be completely enclosed in a magnetic steel container made from no less than 22- gauge magnetic steel. 3. The use of ice, wet or dry, for the purpose of cooling the engine, air cleaner, or fuel system is not allowed. 4. Maximum fuel cell capacity is 22 gallons. Fuel cell must be centered in chassis. Fuel cell frame must maintain a minimum ground clearance of 8-inches without the driver. 5. Replacement of steel fuel lines with steel braided fuel lines is highly recommended. 6. Track Officials reserves the right to test the fuel at any time. 7. No fuel additives. Cooling & Oiling System 1. Stock type replacement water pump, no electric. 2. Electric fan ok. 3. Radiator: Aluminum is OK. Must have catch can mounted in front of firewall. Recommended to have overflow hose mounted to right hand corner of windshield. 4. Water wetter ok, no anti-freeze may be used. 5. Oiling system: Must be wet sump system, remote filters permitted, and racing pan are OK. 6. No two-stage or belt driven oil pumps allowed. Exhaust 1. No 180-degree headers. 2. Exhaust equalizer "H" and X pipes are permitted. 3. All exhaust system must exit past the driver's compartment. The minimum exhaust system ground clearance is 3 inches. 4. Stepped headers allowed. 5. Iron lung & tri Y headers ok. Engine location 1. Must be centered between frame rails, 1 tolerance. 2. Crankshaft height is 12 from center of the crank to the ground. Engine placement is measured from the spark plug (closet to the radiator) centerline to an imaginary line projected between the left and right upper A arm ball joint as follows below: 1. All Chevrolets: 4 inches on the driver s side forward of the ball joint. 2. Single Battery 12 volt system only. 3. MSD box with chip capability. (Chips not scheduled to be used at this time, but you need to have the capability) 4. No Crank Triggers. No Magnitos. Please Note: The only engine that will be legal for competition in the Series is the GM Performance 602: part number All 602 engines are subjected to be claimed by but not limited to the Series or by a Series competitor competing in that event. A Series competitor who is claiming an engine will have to finish on the lead lap. No victorious burn out after or during the event by the winner of the event. 8

9 Weight (After Race) All specified weight requirements will be with driver, fuel, oil and water prior to racing. 1. Maximum allowable left side weight for the GM 602 sealed engine will be 58.0% of total weight with driver. 2. Minimum weight for the GM 602 sealed engine will be 2,850 pounds with standard transmission, 2,800 pounds with an automatic transmission 58% left side weight. All other engine combinations will be 2,950 pounds with standard transmission or 2,900 with automatic transmission with 58% left side; absolutely no burn-off. All rules to these engines will revert to the tech director s discretion. 3. With notice and to equalize the competition, these weights can be adjusted with the series tech director s discretion. Engine Penalties Engine Internal - Cam, Crank, Pistons, etc If found illegal the driver/owner will: 1. First Offense (per season): fix the tech issue, pay a $350 fine to Series, not receive their points or payout for that race, and have 50 additional points deducted. 2. Second Offense (per season): fix the tech issue, pay a $750 fine to the Series, not receive their points or payout for that race, and lose all earned points for the season. 3. Third Offense (per season): not receive their payout for that race, lose all points for that race and the entire season, and be disqualified for the entire season or asked to pay $3,000 to the Series for reinstatement. 4. Fourth Offense (per season): Same terms as third offense. All fines collected will be used to support the Series operations and next event payouts.
