Should we cross the line and share our images with and directly engage our subjects? Many Possibilities For Many Reasons We Are juxt January 7, 2014 Interview with Kira Pollack, Director of Photography, TIME magazine on the topic of mobile phone photography. The Art of The Critique (Part 2) We Are Juxt October 23, 2013 Critiques can be a little scary. We are essentially asking someone to purposely look at our work and tell us what we re doing right, and wrong. But how often have you countered your critic with the question, how do I fix what s not working? How do I make my work stronger? The critique is a conversation, a two-way road. A critique isn t just someone looking at your work and sharing their thoughts. It is an opportunity to pick their brain, learn as much as much as possible. Ask questions. Engage the person. Have those questions answered. Leave so inspired that you want to immediately dive into improving your work. Refining Observations We Are Juxt September 11, 2013 An Interview with Magnum photographer, Michael Christopher Brown who joined the legendary Magnum agency with a portfolio dominated by mobile phone images. The Art of The Critique (Part 1) We Are Juxt August 9, 2013 Page6

7 As artists producing work in the world of photography, we all want, we all fear, and we all rely on the critique, more importantly, the result of the critique constructive criticism. And yet it is one of the most misunderstood, poorly practiced, and guarded of treasures. We look to our peers, our mentors, friends, family, and sometimes unsolicited strangers, for their honest thoughts and opinions of our work. So what is it about the critique that makes people so uncomfortable? How can we go about conducting a constructive critique in a way that helps everyone grow emotionally, and professionally? The Purge We Are Juxt July 16, 2013 Known for street photography, I recently was given an opportunity to experiment with mobile phone photography 180 degrees from what I considered normal. iphoneography : The Gimmick That Grew Up [OpEd] We Are Juxt March 19, 2013 My personal opinion on the current state of mobile phone photography, and why it should no longer be called iphoneography. There are skills to this, its not luck. We Are Juxt February 18, 2013 Interview with Documentary photographer Ed Kashi of the photo collective VII regarding the growing popularity of mobile phone photography. 9 andre j. hermann Program Coordinator, Digital Communication department at Houston Community College 6 people have recommended andre j. "I would consider it a privilege to work with Andre again. Not only is he a fantastic photographer and a great person but he really has a gift with making his subjects feel comfortable. He can shoot a normal, everyday person and make them look like a professional model. He's a genius behind the camera." Natalie English, was andre j.'s client "Before Andre was teaching at the Academy of Art, there were not much documentary class available. Andre is the only teacher that really pushed the documentary photography and helps shaped a lot of storytellers." Andy Kwan, was andre j.'s client "André was one of the most influential instructors I had while attending the Academy of Art University. His guidance truly shaped the direction of my work, and his comprehensive knowledge of photography, and more specifically documentary photography and photojournalism, pushed me as well as nurtured my progression into the real world. He was one of those instructors I can look back on and say truly cared about my experience, education, and growth. Despite having completed my program, André continues to mentor me and develop me, and has become much more than an instructor, someone I can truly call a close friend. His professionalism, expertise and involvement as an instructor, as well as personable approach, are characteristics that are paramount in the development of capabilities and talent." Philip Pacheco, was andre j.'s client "I was new to photojournalism and Andre was a great teacher to introduce me to the field. He is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic on all subjects of journalistic media and new trends. He is extremely personable and attentive to the individual needs of his students. His high energy and willingness to teach subjects created a good environment for us as students to excel. He offered outside help and shared links and resources. I would recommend him for any photojournalism teaching position." Carla Crawley, was andre j.'s client "It has been an honor to be Andre's student for two semesters at the Academy of Art University. He is so passionate and energetic with his work, it really relays to his teaching. I have learned so much about Page9

10 photojournalism and the importance of story telling. Because of Andre, I am in love with multimedia and the power of creating a compelling story with my artwork. Andre is simply a great guy that is extremely approachable and will teach you everything he knows. I appreciated how he made his students deal with assignments as if they were real jobs, which I believe help students work professionally. I hope I will have more opportunities to work with Andre." Tomomi Tsukioka, Student, Academy of Art University, studied with andre j. at Academy of Art University "Andre is one of the most passionate instructors I've ever come across. I looked forward to his classes each week because I felt I would not only learn, but I get to experience his vision in teaching. Very inspiring and very detailed with critiques and feedback. Andre is one of those instructors where if you have them you're golden, if you don't then you're probably going through a stream of other instructors. No one can teach passion. But when a person has passion you can see it and become apart of the experience in whatever they do. I'm very thankful to have learned so much from Andre."
