2 JOIN OUR TEAM: The Modesto Police Department is hiring! We are looking for experienced police officers who are ready to take the challenge and work for one of Northern California s premier law enforcement agencies. THE COMMUNITY: Modesto, home to over 200,000 residents, is a community dedicated to growth, progress and maintaining a unique quality of life. Modesto is the 16th largest city in California and is a vibrant and culturally diverse community. Proud of its vibrant citizenry, great traditions, educational opportunities and multi-cultural lifestyles, Modesto offers the full spectrum of art and entertainment and is recognized as a regional cultural hub for the Central Valley. THE DEPARTMENT: The Modesto Police Department is charged with the maintenance of law and order and protection of life and property. The Modesto Police Department currently has over 232 sworn officers and over 79 professional staff. The Department has three divisions: Operations, Investigations, and Support Services. Numerous special assignments are available for officers, including: K-9 Unit Field Training Officer Crime Reduction Team Street Gang Unit Tactical Flight Officer (Partnership with the Stanislaus Sheriff s Air Support Unit) Traffic Unit Bike Patrol Narcotics Enforcement Team Detectives (Homicide, High Tech Crimes, etc.) F.B.I. Safe Streets Task Force Regional Drug Task Force Auto Theft Task Force S.W.A.T. & Hostage Negotiation Team Downtown Entertainment District Dive Team Equestrian Unit Honor Guard DUI Enforcement Modesto Police officers are equipped with some of the latest tools and technology available to aid them in providing efficient and effective service to our community.

3 THE POSITION: Perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; control traffic flow and enforce State and local municipal codes, violations and traffic regulations; perform investigative work; participate in and provide support and assistance to special crime prevention and enforcement programs; and perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Department. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS: Experience: One year of experience in a California law enforcement agency, which requires a Basic POST certificate. Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade and completion of a minimum of 30 units of college coursework from an accredited college or university. Possession of an Associate of Arts degree is desirable. License or Certificate: Possession of an appropriate, valid driver s license at time of application; valid California driver s license by time of appointment. Possession of a Basic POST Certificate from the State of California. Additional Requirements: Must be at least 21 years of age at time of application. Must meet physical requirements of the job established by the Department. Must be free from any physical, emotional or mental condition that might adversely affect ability to exercise the powers of a Police Officer. Must be a citizen of the United States or permanent resident who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.

4 BENEFITS: PUBLIC EMPLOYEES' RETIREMENT SYSTEM (3% at 55 Formula): Candidates hired under this recruitment will fall within the 3% at 55 formula and be required to pay the 9% employee contribution. The City does not participate in Social Security, except for the required 1.45% Medicare contribution by both the employee and the City (for employees hired after ). HOLIDAYS OBSERVED: Ten paid holidays per year plus eight hours of holiday credit. (For employees on a 4/11 work schedule, a total of 88 hours of holiday credit are allocated separately, in lieu of holidays). VACATION: Accrual normally begins at a rate of two weeks per year, with incremental increases to five weeks at 21 years of service. Employees may accumulate up to two times their annual accrual. SICK LEAVE: Accumulated at 8 hours per month, 96 hours per year. Employees can accumulate up to 2,200 hours. MEDICAL INSURANCE: Health, dental and vision coverage is provided. The City currently contributes $1,100 per month towards the costs of the employee with dependent coverage for health, dental and vision plans offered by the City and $621 per month for employee-only coverage. The employee pays the balance. An employee who opts out of health coverage receives a lesser amount as an in-lieu contribution into deferred compensation, paid by the City. Health, dental and vision insurance is available upon retirement for retirees and dependents at retiree cost. LIFE INSURANCE: Coverage in the amount of $10,000 is provided by the City. Supplemental coverage is available at employee cost.

5 BENEFITS (continued): LONG TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE: Coverage is sponsored through PORAC, at employee cost, reimbursed by the City. This benefit pays 66 2/3% of the first $7,500 per month in salary. PHYSICAL EXAM: A comprehensive exam is provided once per year, at City expense. SPECIAL POST PAY: 2.5% Intermediate or 5% Advanced and 1% at 10 years or 2% at 15 years Senior Officer/Detective. DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Employees may enroll on a voluntary basis. SECTION 125 PLAN: Providing for pre-tax deductions for employee-paid health premiums, un-reimbursed medical expenses, and dependent care costs. EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: Available to employees and dependents through a specialized counseling service under contract to the Police Department. UNIFORM ALLOWANCE: Uniform allowance of $94 per month.

6 LATERAL POLICE OFFICER HIRING INCENTIVES: The Modesto Police Department is offering additional incentives for Lateral Police Officers. SALARY STEP PLACEMENT: Based on your education and experience, you may be considered for a higher pay step within the Police Officer classification range. STEP INCREASE: Based on your performance evaluation, you may be considered for a step increase after 6 months. PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Police Officer Laterals will have a shortened probationary period (twelve months total from date of hire). VACATION ACCRUAL: Vacation accrual will be based upon years of law enforcement service. EQUIPMENT AND UNIFORM: The city will provide newly hired Lateral Police Officers with uniform equipment and reimburse the officers for the purchase of two complete uniforms. This one-time uniform reimbursement is in addition to the annual uniform allowance.
