The SARC contains information about the condition and performance of each California public school. Under the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) all Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) are required to prepare a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), which describes how they intend to meet annual school-specific goals for all pupils, with specific activities to address state and local priorities. Additionally, data reported in a LCAP is to be consistent with data reported in the SARC. Principal s Message Del Lago Academy Campus of Applied Science opened in 2013, and this year will be our first graduating class. Students learn to use their minds well through defining and solving problems currently facing scientists, mathematicians, historians and artists. They collaborate with peers, intern with industry professionals and work with their teachers to question evidence, examine multiple viewpoints, search for connections and patterns, envision how things could be different and ask and answer the question, Who cares? Del Lago students strive everyday to become future scholars, innovators, and world citizens. To accomplish these goals at Del Lago Academy, students engage in nationally acclaimed biotechnology and health science programs where they explore concepts of human medicine and often play the role of industry professionals to solve problems focused on feeding, healing, and fueling the world, and restoring and protecting the environment. Community & School Profile (School Year ) Nestled in a long valley in the coastal mountains of Southern California, Escondido provides a thriving urban environment in the midst of gentle rolling hills surrounded by avocado and citrus groves. Located approximately 30 miles northeast of San Diego and 18 miles inland, Escondido is home to over 143,000 residents. This vibrant and diverse community s economic base is made up largely of successful small businesses, many of which are family-owned. The City of Escondido is quickly emerging as a regional economic leader in the forefront of job development and new industries. For over 120 years, the Escondido community has relied on the Escondido Union High School District to provide quality educational opportunities for all students. Currently, nearly 8,000 students attend classes at one of the four campuses supported by EUHSD. Three of our comprehensive high schools (Escondido, Orange Glen, and San Pasqual) have achieved the designation as California Distinguished Schools. 2 Together, with the alternative high school (Valley), we offer a wide range of college preparatory, vocational, and special education courses. In addition, over 10,000 individuals participate each year in a variety of educational and enrichment courses through Adult Education and the Regional Occupational Programs (ROP). Del Lago classrooms are exciting places to be - places where young people feel safe to raise their hand and ask a question. Places where staff and students care deeply about the quality of their work. A school where students work adorn the hallways, classrooms, and virtual spaces. Our school is a place where it s ok to be smart. What does being connected look, sound, and feel like? People will respect you as a person, with unique interests and talents. You can start your own club, team, or community service program with your classmates. 3 School Facilities (School Year ) In 2008, Escondido citizens voted to renovate the existing high schools and build a new small high school focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The new small high school, Del Lago Academy Campus of Applied Science, was designed to meet this community request. Opened in August 2013, the school sits on 34 acres and at full capacity will serve 800 scholars. This state of the art building features 8 high tech science laboratories, a sports and fitness center, and an extensive computer technology infrastructure. The facility strongly supports teaching and learning through its ample classroom and recreational space. The chart displays the results of the most recent facilities inspection. Maintenance and Repair Safety concerns are the number one priority of Maintenance and Operations. District maintenance supervisors are proactive and conduct inspections at school sites on a continual basis. Repairs necessary to keep the school in good repair and working order are completed in a timely manner. A work order process is used to ensure efficient service and that emergency repairs are given the highest priority. Cleaning Process and Schedule The district governing board has adopted cleaning standards for all schools in the district. All schools are cleaned daily. A summary of these standards is available at the school office or at the district office. The site administration team works daily with the custodial staff to develop cleaning schedules to ensure a clean and safe school. Del Lago Academy 3

4 Instructional Materials (School Year ) Escondido Union High School District sets a high priority upon ensuring that sufficient and current textbooks and materials are available to support instructional programs. Escondido Union High School District held a Public Hearing on September 8, 2015, and determined that each school within the district has sufficient and good quality textbooks, instructional materials, or science lab equipment, pursuant to the settlement of Williams vs. the State of California. All students, including English Learners, are given their own individual standards-aligned textbooks or instructional materials, or both, in core subjects and visual and performing arts, for use in the classroom and to take home. Textbooks and supplementary materials are adopted according to a cycle developed by the California Department of Education, making the textbooks used in the school the most current available. Materials approved for use by the state are reviewed by all teachers and a recommendation is made to the School Board by a selection committee composed of teachers and administrators. All recommended materials are available for parent examination at the district office prior to adoption. The schools also utilize a variety of novels and other instructional materials throughout their curriculum. Pupil Outcomes State Priority: Pupil Achievement The SARC provides the following information relevant to the Pupil Achievement State Priority (Priority 4): Statewide assessments (i.e., California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress and its predecessor the Standardized Testing and Reporting Program); and The percentage of pupils who have successfully completed courses that satisfy the requirements for entrance to the University of California and the California State University, or career technical education sequences or programs of study. California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) California EC Section authorized the replacement of the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program with a new assessment program, referred to as the CAASPP. All students in grades three through eight and eleven were assessed using computer-based tests in English/ Language Arts and Mathematics; students in grades five, eight, and ten were also tested in Science. Science assessments were paper-based and included California Standards Tests (CSTs), California Modified Assessment (CMA), and California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA). Students receive an overall score for each subject, ranging from 2,000 to 3,000. Overall scores are reported within one of four levels: Performance Level 1: Standard not met - Needs substantial improvement for success in future coursework. Performance Level 2: Standard nearly met - May require further development for success in future coursework. Performance Level 3: Standard met - Demonstrates progress toward mastery. Performance Level 4: Standard exceeded - Demonstrates advanced progress toward mastery. ELA results include information about the students performance in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and research. Career Technical Education (CTE) Programs (School Year ) Del Lago Academy was designed around a core academic program that engages students in real-world learning to better prepare them to be successful in college and career. Del Lago Academy highlights four overarching goals for bringing college and career relevance to high school students. 1. Bring relevance to the daily curriculum in all content areas. 2. Develop habits of work. 3. Foster college and career exposure and exploration. 4. Expand students social networks and access to opportunities. Our highly successful school-to-work program begins with building student awareness and progresses to include college and career exploration and preparation. The School to College and Career program at Del Lago begins with activities to raise college and career awareness for entering students. Over a 4-year period, the program moves across a continuum of ever-increasing student involvement and hands-on experience. 7 Physical Fitness (School Year ) In the spring of each year, Del Lago Academy is required by the state to administer a physical fitness test to all students in ninth grade. The physical fitness test is a standardized evaluation that measures each student s ability to perform fitness tasks in six major areas. This table displays by grade level the percent of students meeting fitness standards (scoring in the healthy fitness zone on all six fitness standards) for the most recent testing period. The CAHSEE has an English language/arts section and a math section and, for purposes of calculating AYP, three performance levels were set: Advanced, Proficient, and Not Proficient. The score a student must achieve to be considered Proficient is different than the passing score for the graduation requirement. Engagement State Priority: Parental Involvement The SARC provides the following information relevant to the Parental Involvement State Priority (Priority 3): Efforts the school district makes to seek parent input in making decisions for the school district and each school site. Parent Involvement (School Year ) The Del Lago facilities and instructional program design team included students, parents, community leaders, and district staff. Over 100 parent meetings were held prior to opening to ensure the Del Lago student body mirrors the Escondido community. Potential families participated in STEM workshops to learn about the Del Lago curriculum and instruction. Once opened, the DLA Parent Foundation immediately formed to support the school. This group meets twice a month with the principal and school social worker to discuss current events and strategize fundraising. Del Lago Academy 7

Completion of High School Graduation Requirements - Class of 2014 The school is required to report the number of students who were a part of the school s most recent graduating class for which CDE has available data and meet all state and local graduation requirements for grade twelve completion, including having passed both the ELA and mathematics portions of the CAHSEE or received a local waiver or state exemption. The most recent data available is from the school year. Because the school had no seniors enrolled during that year, there is no information to report in this section. Detailed information about the CAHSEE can be found at the CDE website at Dropout & Graduation Rates (Four-Year Cohort Rate) Del Lago scholars engage in a focused, single pathway curriculum where the content and school-to-work are integrated. Scholars work together in villages with teacher teams responsible for the same 110 students. As a result, scholars are known well, as academics and individuals by their teachers, peers, and staff. This community approach is the foundation of our intervention and dropout plan. After school and Saturday tutorials with faculty and college tutors provide additional academic support. Scholars also participate in a multi grade level advisory period every week and keep the same advisory teacher for throughout their high school years. School administration works with Escondido police, fire, and public health agencies to review and ensure the school safety plan is current and effective. Scholars, staff, and parents work together to create a socially and emotionally safe environment on campus. The school culture stems from intentionally teaching scholars five essential agreements: Welcome, Do No Harm, Never To Late Too Learn, Choice Words, and Be the Best. Agreed upon by our school community, these Pillars provide a solid foundation to discuss how our community works and lives together. Coupling a safe physical environment with a healthy school culture creates a safe, responsive approach to school safety. The School Site Safety plan was last reviewed and updated in August 2015 by the School Safety Committee. All revisions were communicated to the both the classified and certificated staff. The school gives special attention to students who experience achievement problems, difficulty coping with personal and family problems, trouble with decision making, or handling peer pressure. The academic counselor-to-pupil ratio is 1:256. The chart displays support staff available to students at the school. Staff Development All training and curriculum development at Escondido Union High School District revolves around the California Content Standards. Staff development days are used for a broad-based variety of professional growth opportunities in curriculum, teaching strategies, and methodologies that support English Learners. In addition, the district provides an induction program for first and second year teachers to help them develop as professional educators. For the past three years, the district offered no districtwide staff development days. School Leadership Principal Keith Nuthall has led the school since it opened in the fall of Leadership at Del Lago Academy - Campus of Applied Science is a responsibility shared among district administration, the principal, vice principal, academic dean, instructional staff, students, and parents. The district s emphasis is on a well-balanced and rigorous core curriculum at all grade levels. Del Lago Academy 9

10 Adequate Yearly Progress (School Year ) No Child Left Behind (NCLB) is a federal law enacted in January 2002 that reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). It mandates that all students (including students who are economically disadvantaged, are from racial or ethnic minority groups, have disabilities, or have limited English proficiency) in all grades meet the state academic achievement standards for Mathematics and English/Language Arts by Schools must demonstrate Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) toward achieving that goal. The Federal NCLB Act requires that all schools and districts meet the following Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) requirements: Participation rate on the state s standards-based assessments in English/Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. Percent proficient on the state s standards-based assessments in ELA and Mathematics. Graduation rate (for secondary schools). There are several consequences for schools that do not meet the AYP standards, including additional tutoring and replacing of staff. Students would also be allowed to transfer to schools (within their district) that have met their AYP, and the former school would be required to provide the transportation to the new site.
