6 Our History We can trace our origins to 1876 with the formation of the leading tutorial firm Gibson & Weldon and later on, with the establishment of The Law Society School of Law. In 1962 the two were amalgamated to establish The College of Law. In 2006 we made history by becoming the first-ever independent institution to gain the power to award degrees. And in 2012 we became the first private institution to be given university status, and became The University of Law. Our rich heritage is balanced with our fresh, modern approach. Our passion for innovation is reflected in the way we teach, with all our courses combining academic rigour and practical skills. Each student has a personal tutor providing one-to-one ongoing support, as well as advice on starting working life, whether in law or another discipline. As resident tutors based in our centres, they operate an open door policy, so you can talk to them whenever you need. Since qualifying, he has worked in practice and became the youngest ever Managing Partner of the London office of international firm, O Melveny & Myers. A law qualification gives you many invaluable life skills almost like a toolkit to use not just professionally but personally too Nick Connor Graduated 1987, Guildford Managing Director, Volvo Car UK Ltd Nick studied the Legal Practice Course (LPC). Since then, he has practised as a solicitor before moving to Volvo Car UK, joining first as Group Solicitor and Company Secretary before moving into his current role heading up the UK as Managing Director. Advocacy skills are absolutely invaluable and will set you in good stead in a business environment 17

18 What you can expect The quality of our learning programmes and tutors, the level of support and student guidance, purpose-built centres in great locations it s little surprise that our students, past and present, say they re delighted they chose to study law with us. We also have a range of debating societies, sports teams, fundraising events, balls, parties and social activites. And with all our centres close to music venues, theatres, cinemas, sports centres, bars and restaurants, there s plenty to keep you entertained. Of course, you need time to switch off from studying too. So our centres have a range of activities and events to make sure you have a full, rounded experience.
