7 LEEDS LAW SCHOOL 5 Undergraduate Courses LLB (HONS) LAW The LLB (Hons) Law is a qualifying law degree. This means that it has been recognised by professional legal bodies as fulfilling the academic stage of your legal training should you want to go on to qualify as a solicitor or barrister. For many this will be the first opportunity to study law, therefore, the course is designed to give students an experience of the substantive law areas whilst also learning the legal skills required for further study. Once you have completed the course you are qualified to progress to the vocational stage of training for solicitors and barristers. In addition to the compulsory subjects which make up the qualifying law degree you may choose from a wide range of electives, or options, which provide you with an opportunity to study, in detail, specialist areas of law ranging from intellectual property to medical law. This flexible and innovative course will maximise your opportunities in the legal and criminal justice sector. The BA (Hons) Law with Criminology is a qualifying law degree. This degree will offer you a variety on learning experiences and allow students to develop the necessary skills for working within the legal profession or criminal justice sector. In the later stages of the degree students can tailor their degree towards specific areas of interest through the many electives options with law and/or criminology. This joint award allows you to study all the legal foundation subjects needed for a qualifying law degree and also focus on the study of criminology. This award enables you to learn the key legal concepts whilst gaining an understanding of the main theories and principles connected with criminology. You also learn about important legal principles and their impact on society. Many of our students go on to practice as solicitors and barristers. Others pursue careers in areas such as education, the police, victim support services, youth offenders and the probation service.

PART-TIME STUDY Part-time routes are available should you wish to take advantage of more flexible and longer term study. Studying part-time can be an attractive option if you are already in work or have family or other commitments and usually involves studying over four of five years. Please note that part-time study also takes place during the day. Your fees will be relative to the time spent studying. Please call our Admissions team on for more details. ASSESSMENT Assessment on these courses is through a combination of examinations, coursework, assignments, group-work, projects and case studies. The variety of assessments allows you to develop and demonstrate your knowledge and understanding, and depends in part upon your choice of elective modules in the final year. The elective choices include, for example, an optional dissertation. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS UCAS tariff points: 260 points overall, to include a minimum of 160 from 6/12 unit awards. Required GCSE s: English Language and Maths grade C or above (or equivalent). IELTS: 6.0 or equivalent. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Our graduates are equipped with the crucial skills needed to gain a competitive advantage when starting their career within or outside law and take up opportunities in both commercial and noncommercial organisations. Our excellent graduate employment rate highlights the quality of our graduates 93% of our students gain employment or go on to further study within six months of graduation. Recent graduates have taken up roles such as Legal Assistants, Trainee Solicitors, Paralegals, Case Workers and Legal Secretaries. Many of our undergraduate students continue at Leeds Law School in order to complete the Legal Practice Course (LPC) which provides the taught part of the vocational stage of training required by the Law Society for entry to the solicitor s profession. 11 LEEDS LAW SCHOOL 9 Student Life at Leeds Law School STUDENT LAW SOCIETY The Student Law Society is one of the most successful and active groups within Leeds Met Students Union, with over 500 members. This student led society organises a variety of events for students within the Law School. These range from social events to guest lectures from leading lawyers in the legal community both are designed to enhance members experience during their time at Leeds Met. The Law Society committee members are also there to provide support to students within the society. Whether a student is experiencing problems of a personal or academic nature, the Law Society will help direct them to the people who can help. MOOTING COMPETITIONS Students in the Law School often take part in both internal and external mooting competitions. A moot is an oral presentation of a legal issue or problem. It gives law students from universities accross the UK the opportunity to gain experience in their future roles as advocates. One of the most prestigious mooting competitions in the country which our students have taken part in is the EDU Essex Court Chambers, which is open to any university with an undergraduate law programme. The final of this competition is held in a real courtroom at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, before a panel of three judges. STREETLAW Many students in the Law Society also take part in the Streetlaw project, this student-led initiative provides interactive workshops in schools. These workshops cover areas central to the citizenship element of the national curriculum such as the debate around anti-social behaviour legislation and young people s legal rights and responsibilities. These workshops are an excellent way to inform young people about their responsibilities to society and the implications of breaking the law. Not only is joining the Streetlaw Society a great way of making new friends but also provides students with an opportunity to enhance their CV.

12 10 visit for more information LEGAL LEEDS Students within the Law School have the opportunity to build links with top law firms in the local community through their studies and extra-curricular activities. High attaining students are often awarded with cash prizes and work experience with firms in Leeds. SISTERS MAKE MOOT POINT Sister students, Lauren and Eva Darling won the 2009 Mooting Competition held in Cloth Hall Court s Mock Courtroom and were awarded five days work experience by the competition judge Jonathan Godfrey at Park Lane Plowden Chambers. BEST STUDENT ON FAMILY LAW Sannia Aqeel became the first student at Leeds Law School to win the best student on the Family Law module. Her efforts were commended by national law firm Mills & Reeve LLP, sponsors of the award who offered Sannia one week s work experience and a cash prize of 100. LEEDS LEGAL ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION Leeds Law School students won first, second and third place at the 2009 Leeds Legal Essay Writing Competition. Open to Leeds 2500 law students, the competition gives students the opportunity to exlpore a legal topic of interest to them. ANNUAL LAW BALL Each year, students from the Law School celebrate the end of the academic year in style with the Annual Law Ball. The most glamourous event of the Student Law Society s calendar, the event usually includes a champagne reception, fourcourse meal and live music. Winner Tom Royston received 1000 and a summer placement with Lupton Fawcett, whilst runnerup Corrine Manfield earned herself 250 and a placement with Shulmans Solicitors. The third place student, also from Leeds Law School won a placement with law firm Pinsent Masons. The Law Ball provides the perfect opportunity for Leeds Met s budding lawyers to celebrate their achievements over the course of the year. Each year the event is sponsored by one of the region s leading law firms and takes on a theme, which have included masquerade, 1950 s glamour and 007.

What I like about Leeds Law School is how diverse it is and I really appreciate the relationship it has with the local law firms. I love Leeds, I have grown up here and really like the way the city is changing, it s great for student life and there are so many good restaurants and bars. Not only am I learning the essential skills for a career but I am also learning a great deal about what to do to get a training contract. 18 16 visit for more information Lombros Hadjikriakos from Cyprus has fulfilled his lifelong ambition to study law. He visited Leeds once when he was younger and always wanted to return. The knowledge I have gained at Leeds Met has provided a brilliant foundation for me to build on! It was four years of brilliance that got better and better. The facilities on offer here are amazing and I tried to use the gym as much as I could. I don t think a day passed when I didn t set foot in the library, I spent most of my time in there. It is a great place for learning, with great books and resources to use. Lombros would like to complete a Masters in Law and ultimatley wants to specialise in maritime law during his career the knowledge I have gained at Leeds Met has provided a brilliant foundation for me to build on! 19 LEEDS LAW SCHOOL 17 As a student, Amy became the driving force behind the Law Society as Master of Moots for two years. As part of her responsibility she went through hints and tips with fellow mooters and worked on past cases, legislation and skeleton arguments. She was also responsible for helping to organise two of the Annual Law Balls, describing this year s 1950s themed event as amazing. Earlier this year Amy was rewarded for her hard work when she received a Student Achievement Award for her work with the Law Society and the Students Union. Being part of the student societies was really important for me and gave me a wider university experience. Amy feels that graduating with a 2:1 from Leeds Law School has really given her an advantage in applying for jobs and she looks forward to doing so once she has completed her Legal Practice Course (LPC).
