1 CARDIFF LAW SCHOOL PART TIME LEGAL PRACTICE COURSE: Our part-time course is delivered on Fridays over 2 years, combining a mixture of face to face small group teaching and online lecture delivery to create a flexible LPC for busy parttime students. Our part-time course offers: the same high quality teaching as on our full time LPC; lectures which can be accessed online at a time to suit you; course materials accessible online; excellent links with the local profession; specialist careers advice from the University s careers department; a dedicated legal practice library with extensive IT facilities and evening & weekend opening hours; key dates available at the start of the course to enable you to plan in advance; a placement scheme, subject to availability, for students without training contracts or recent legal experience; an award winning pro-bono scheme; dedicated personal tutors, available face to face, by phone and ; an excellent location close to the Welsh Assembly, law courts and tribunals, the city centre and all major transport links; and access to the wider University facilities such as health, sports and fitness, childcare, etc. Term Dates The LPC will begin on Monday 9 September 2013 with registration. Lessons will begin that afternoon. The provisional term dates for year 1 are: Term 1 Monday 9 September 2013 to Friday 20 December 2013 Term 2 Monday 6 January 2014 to Friday 21 February 2014 Term 3 Monday 17 March 2014 to Friday 23 May 2014 (with Easter vacation being weeks commencing 14th April and 21st April). 2 Provisionally, the examination periods are scheduled for the following weeks: Core practice areas - weeks beginning 24 th February, 3 and 10 March 2014; Elective subjects - weeks beginning 26 May and 2 and 9 June Please note: the LPC includes other assessments held under supervised conditions during term time (accounts and skills assessments).you need to be prepared to commit to the course from the very beginning and ensure that you are free to attend the university each Friday during term time. In total, you should expect to spend around hours on your studies each week during term. Course Structure The LPC is divided two stages: Stage 1 Stage 1 consists of: Stage 2 Professional Conduct and Regulation (PCR), including Solicitors Accounts (SAR); Wills Administration and Estates (WAE); Taxation; Three core practice areas - Business Law and Practice (BLP), Property Law and Practice (PLP), Litigation (LIT); and The Course Skills Practical Legal Research (PLR), Writing (WRI), Drafting (DRF), Interviewing and Advising (INT), Advocacy (ADV). Stage 2 consists of 3 vocational electives. We keep our range of elective courses under review. We intend to offer 9 electives in : Child Care Law; Commercial Litigation*; Commercial Property*; Employment Law; Family Law; Intellectual Property; Mergers and Acquisitions; Personal Injury Litigation*; and Private Client. Subject to certain limitations on the combination of electives you may study, and the need for minimum class sizes, you choose which three electives you would like to study. 3 How will the part time course be structured? On the part time LPC, Stages 1 and 2 extend over both years 1 and 2 of the course as follows: In year 1 students will study: a short induction to introduce the Course Skills, Professional Conduct and Regulation and Taxation; Business Law and Practice; Wills and Administration of Estates; Drafting; Interviewing and Advising; Practical Legal Research; Solicitors Accounts; and one elective subject. Year 2 Litigation; Property Law and Practice; Writing; Advocacy; and two elective subjects. How will the course be delivered? We offer a mixture of face to face small group teaching, which takes place on Fridays, and pre recorded lectures, which can be accessed online. This will enable you to benefit from the same high quality teaching as the full time students with the added flexibility of attending lectures at a time which suits you. The online lectures can be accessed on a home PC, or accessed on the law school computers if you prefer. All our course materials are also accessible on-line. Careers services Our links with the profession have been highlighted by the Law Society and SRA as one of the strengths of the course and the reputation of our graduates with local practitioners is excellent. Each year we run a successful placement scheme with the support of local firms. The scheme is open to those students without training contracts or recent legal work experience and has proved invaluable to past students. Specialist careers advice is available from the university s expert careers department and personal tutors are on hand to offer help with CV s and applications. We run a number of pro bono schemes which take place throughout the week, some of which are on weekday evenings, giving added flexibility for busy part time students. 4 Library and IT services In addition to the main law library and other university libraries, all of which you will have unlimited access to, we have a dedicated Legal Practice Library for LPC and BPTC students. The Legal Practice Library is open until 9pm during the week and until 5.30pm on Saturdays to enable you to fit your studies around other commitments. We offer excellent teaching accommodation with dedicated LPC classrooms for small group sessions, each with interactive white board and internet access. We have excellent IT facilities with computers available in the libraries and an IT room in the law school. In addition there is Wi-Fi access throughout the Legal Practice Library. Other services In addition to the dedicated careers services there is a high level of pastoral support available. You will be allocated a personal tutor who will be available face to face, by phone and . You will also have access to all the wider university facilities such as catering, social events, health, sports and fitness, childcare etc. Fees For home/eu students, the course fee for the LPC is 10,750. This includes: a tuition fee of 10,200, ( 5,100 is payable during each year of study); and a deposit /materials fee of 550, which is payable before you start. For overseas students, the course fee for the LPC is 13,450. This includes: a tuition fee of 12,900 ( 6,450 is payable during each year of study); and a deposit /materials fee of 550, which is payable before you start. The tuition fee element of the course fee can be paid in six instalments over the two years of study. We will ask for the materials fee of 550 by way of a deposit when you accept an offer. You will also have to pay a SRA LPC registration fee of 60 for each year of your study. Admissions Our selection process is based on flexible criteria. The criteria we take into account include: your academic record; your own statement in support of your application; statements made by your referee; your degree of commitment to the solicitors profession, as evidenced by placements, legal employment or a secured training contract; PART TIME COURSE INFORMATION 4 CARDIFF LAW SCHOOL LPC

5 your reasons for wanting to study at Cardiff. In order to enrol on our course you will have to have satisfied the Solicitors Regulation Authority s base requirements (both academic and otherwise). Please note that although admission to most postgraduate courses at the university requires two satisfactory references, entry to the LPC requires you to submit only one satisfactory reference. Your referee should have knowledge of your academic ability. If you are currently a student or have recently completed your studies, your referee must be a lecturer or professor from your university or similar place of study.
