EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION JWU s educational approach is designed to help students identify a field of interest and acquire the knowledge, skills and experience to excel in that field. Our unique education model integrates academics and professional skills, related work experiences, community and leadership opportunities and career services. Students develop academic schedules and work experience plans relevant to their career goals, starting in their first term. Our experiential education model includes career management workshops, a suite of career services, a customized online career management website, work experience tied to a field of study and on-campus recruitment opportunities. JWU maintains relationships with hundreds of the world s industry-leading companies and offers a variety of work experience programs. In , 4,224 students gained industry experience related to their major at 1,947 sites across 50 states and 35 countries. In , 1,526 companies participated in on-campus career conferences and other industry networking events that connect students with leading companies in their field. In , 2,597 on-campus interviews were conducted across JWU s four campuses. The National Society for Experiential Education conferred its highest honor upon JWU: the 2014 William M. 6 CAMPUS FACILITIES The Providence Campus is spread across 175 acres and approximately 2,400,000 square feet of 61 buildings, including residence halls, classrooms, labs, dining halls, libraries, offices, open spaces, and internship, recreation and physical plant facilities. SUSTAINING THE ENVIRONMENT JWU has revitalized close to 100 acres of waterfront alongside the Harborside Campus through significant brownfields remediation efforts. Improvements include shoreline reconstruction, an Urban Coastal Greenway, athletic fields, and the donation of a six-acre waterfront parcel for an environmentally smart design educational and research center dedicated to the protection of Narragansett Bay and marine life. The Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence, Grace Welcome Center and Center for Physician Assistant Studies have been awarded LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for energy and material use and for incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies. It would allow JWU to build academic facilities from the ground up. Recognizing that its smaller, leased campus facilities in Charleston and Norfolk did not provide the ideal environment for continued evolution and strategic growth, JWU announced in 2002 that it would consolidate these two campuses into a new one in Charlotte. EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION JWU s educational approach is designed to help students identify a field of interest and acquire the knowledge, skills and experience to excel in that field. Our unique education model integrates academics and professional skills, related work experiences, community and leadership opportunities and career services. Students develop academic schedules and work experience plans relevant to their career goals, starting in their first term. Our experiential education model includes career management workshops, a suite of career services, a customized online career management website, work experience tied to a field of study and on-campus recruitment opportunities. JWU maintains relationships with hundreds of the world s industry-leading companies and offers a variety of work experience programs. In , 676 Charlotte Campus students gained industry experience related to their major. In , 428 companies participated in the on-campus career conference, allowing students to connect with leading companies in their field. In , 727 on-campus interviews were conducted. The National Society for Experiential Education conferred its highest honor upon JWU: the 2014 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Excellence in Experiential Education. GLOBAL REACH The Charlotte Campus has 2,255 students from 12 countries and 45 states and territories. The top five international student populations represent the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Germany and Netherlands Antilles. JWU students have the opportunity to participate in one of 40 study abroad and exchange programs in 21 countries. COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC IMPACT During the academic year, Charlotte Campus students performed 28,943 hours of community service. The Charlotte Campus has been named to the President s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll each year since it was established in This is the highest federal recognition institutions of higher education can receive for supporting community service and service-learning.
