2 Jacksonville University, founded in 1934, is a Private Not-for-profit Masters University located on the east bank of the St. John s River in Jacksonville, FL.

4 Brief History Chartered in 1934 as Porter University Changed name to Jacksonville Junior College in 1935 College finds permanent home in 1950 The same year, JJC receives full accreditation from Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Learning JJC becomes Jacksonville University in 1961 when JU becomes a fully accredited four-year institution

5 Brief History Dr. Frances B. Kinne becomes the first female University President in the state of Florida and the second in the nation at JU in 1980

19 Nellie the Dolphin Jacksonville University s mascot, Nellie the Dolphin, was the oldest living dolphin in captivity Nellie died this year she was 61 years old. Nellie had received her honorary Masters Degree in Marine Science and an honorary Doctorate in Health Sciences.
