2 College of Mission The College of strives to foster awareness and appreciation of the humanities, fine arts, and social sciences among students, the university community, and the public. The College is a learning community dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and its application through civic and professional leadership. Students and faculty members act as advocates f the humanities, fine arts, and social sciences in a variety of ways, ranging from teaching and scholarly wk to perfmance, exhibition, and consultation. To this end, the College actively promotes research and creative activities among its faculty and students. The College seeks to provide a personalized learning experience promoting the free and rigous pursuit of knowledge, respect f differing points of view and cultures, appreciation of personal expression in all its artistic fms, awareness of the role of an educated citizenry in a democratic society, and understanding of the role values play in thought and action. The College aims to develop students who think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, and participate actively in their communities. Thus, the College of is committed to preparing well-educated, thoughtful, and contributing citizens of the wld. Programs The College of consists of the departments of Art and Design; English and Philosophy; Histy; Modern Languages; Music; Political Science and Sociology; Psychology; and Theatre. Undergraduate degrees offered are Bachel of Science, Bachel of Arts, Bachel of Fine Arts, Bachel of Music Education, and Bachel of Music. Graduate degrees are Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Music Education, Master of Public Administration, and Master of Science. Murray State University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the National Association of Schools of Music and the National Association of Schools of Theatre. The College offers programs in the traditional humanities (English, philosophy, histy, and modern languages); social sciences (political science and sociology); and behavial science (psychology). The fine and perfming arts (art, music, and theatre) offer traditional and contempary programs in their disciplines through studio and classroom courses, perfmances, gallery events, and ensembles. Additionally, the college encourages all students to participate in the cultural and artistic life of the campus through creative writing colloquia, poetry readings, exhibitions, and participation in music ensembles, marching band, and/ chal groups. The college offers a variety of innovative arts, humanities, and social science courses through the institution s University Studies curriculum. English composition and the two interdisciplinary ce courses, Wld Civilizations and Humanities, are integral parts of preparing every Murray State student to communicate effectively, to engage in sound analysis and make logical decisions, to understand the wld s histical, literary, and philosophical traditions, to understand cultural diversity and competing economic and political systems as well as complex mal and ethical issues, and to become responsible citizens in a democratic society all of which are desired characteristics of the Murray State graduate. The college serves as the cultural heart of the university and the region by providing a broad range of cultural and intellectual programs. Campus and regional community members are encouraged to attend college events. Distinguished college faculty engage actively in teaching, scholarly/creative activity, and service. The college is committed to service to the community through its role in teacher education and involvement with the public schools. The English and Philosophy Department sponss the Jesse Stuart Symposium as well as the MSU Reading Series each academic year. The Department of Political Science and Sociology annually sponss the Harry Lee Waterfield Distinguished Lecture in Public Affairs. In addition, the college offers students rich opptunities f international study and intercultural experience. MSU is a member of the Kentucky Institute f International Studies, a constium of public and private universities offering study-abroad programs in numerous international destinations. Many college faculty are also involved in feign travel and study in English-speaking countries. Opptunities to study in the U.K., Ireland, Australia, Canada, and other countries are available. The college offers the Master of Arts degree in English, histy, clinical and general experimental psychology, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), the Master of Science in clinical and general experimental psychology, the Master of Music Education (M.M.E.), the Master of Public Administration (M.P.A), and the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in creative writing. The college also suppts the Master of Arts in Education in Secondary Education. Graduates of programs in the college pursue a variety of careers. In addition to teaching, graduates are employed in business, communications, government, law, the ministry, psychology, and a variety of private and social agencies, as well as international governmental and non-governmental ganizations. Careers available in the fine arts fields include perfmance (vocal, instrumental, and theatrical), design, web design, graphic communications, and art, museum, and theatre management. All programs follow the liberal arts model of preparing students broadly f a rapidly changing job market. Students are prepared to communicate effectively, think critically, develop the analytical skills necessary to solve problems, learn on their own, understand human behavi, and imagine alternative ways of viewing problems. Several of the programs in the college provide excellent preparation f a career in law. Departments and programs of the College of are housed in four buildings on the main campus: the Price Doyle Fine Arts Center, Faculty Hall, Wells Hall, and Wilson Hall. See page Liberal Arts The Liberal Arts maj is designed f students interested in investigating connections between two me traditional liberal arts fields. Following a wide-reaching University Studies and ce program, students choose two 8-hour fields of study drawn from the arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, plus a min, and at least one Study Abroad experience. Liberal Arts majs also produce a multidisciplinary seni project in which they exple a topic of interest that combines at least two of their fields of study. Liberal Arts majs are self-motivated and think creatively across the disciplines. Liberal Arts majs prepare to serve the growing demand in business, industry, and the professions f broadly educated individuals who exhibit interpersonal, analytical, technical, and communication skills, as well as individual initiative. Faculty: Beaver, Bryant, Gutwirth, Hand-Bryant, Jung, Lavery, Leys, Schrock, Smetana, Utgaard. 82 The Department of Art and Design provides a broad range of programs and professional opptunities f students preparing to wk as practicing artists, craftspersons and designers, f careers in art education, and f graduate study in art, art education, and art histy. Students pursuing a degree in art may select a program of study leading to either the Bachel of Fine Arts, the Bachel of Arts, the Bachel of Science degree. Teacher certification in art is available to undergraduate students within each degree as an Track requiring only an additional year of study. Degree candidates are certified to teach art in kindergarten through grade 2. A min in art and a min in art histy are also offered to the general college student. Elective courses in art appreciation, art histy, and studio art are open to non-art majs. Graduate courses in art are offered in suppt of the M.A.Ed. with a teaching area in studio art. The curricular structure of each degree program is ganized to encourage students to study and exple a variety of media and techniques upon which later specialization may be based. Areas of specialization include ceramics, drawing, furniture design, graphic design, metalsmithing, photography, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. At the intermediate and advanced levels, students are encouraged by faculty to express their own personal direction and ideas and to establish professional standards by the exhibition of their wk. The culmination of the student s undergraduate study is the seni exhibition requirement. The Institute f International Studies offers a variety of study abroad opptunities f MSU art students. Through direct exchanges and special international courses, students can study in a number of countries. The department operates a netwk of four galleries on campus. Three galleries that comprise the Clara M. Eagle Gallery and the Curris Center Gallery. The Clara M. Eagle Galleries and the Curris Center Gallery provide the university and community with significant cultural and educational programs. The exhibition schedule offers wk by histical and contempary artists including MSU faculty, students, alumni

5 and visiting artists. A large ption of the exhibition space is continually used by the students. Department, class, and/ individual shows are always on view. Programs include the annual student art show and the visiting artist series. Studios in all areas are well equipped, providing maximum opptunities f students to pursue their interests. Art facilities are housed primarily in the Price Doyle Fine Arts Center. The Clara M. Eagle Gallery is located on the sixth flo of the Price Doyle Fine Arts Center. The art gallery in the Curris Center is located on the first level. NOTE: A grade of C better must be achieved in all courses with the ART prefix that are applied to art area degree requirements. All courses with the ART prefix that serve as prerequisites require a grade of C better befe the next course in a sequence may be taken. Scholarships Scholarships and grants-in-aid are available to qualified art students. Accreditation Murray State University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Teacher certification programs are also accredited by the National Council f Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Credit by Examination The credit by examination programs in which the MSU Department of Art and Design participates are the Advanced Placement Program of the College Board (APP), the departmental challenge examination, and the non-credit placement examination.
