7 DANIELLE WOODS INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS GRADUATE HEAD OF MARKETING, ALLEASING For me, continuing to learn and grow is very important. Undertaking a master s allowed me to broaden my experience and exposure to a range of disciplines, with many of the areas covered becoming increasingly important as my career progresses. I also believe we should challenge ourselves to look at things in different ways and that sometimes we need to step out of the organisation in which we work to do this. A SNAPSHOT OF OUR ACHIEVEMENTS Ranked in the top three per cent of universities across all three of the major international university ranking systems the Academic Ranking of World Universities, Times Higher Education World University Rankings and QS World University Rankings assessed from universities worldwide. Ranked number one in Victoria, number six in Australia and number 45 in the world, in the world s top 50 universities under 50 years of age QS World University Rankings. 5 stars out of 5 for student retention The Good Universities Guide stars out of 5 for overall satisfaction The Good Universities Guide Named International Education Provider of the Year, and won awards for Excellence in Education (University) and Excellence in International Education (Student Employability and Careers) at the Victorian International Education Awards DEAKIN CRACKS WORLD S TOP 50 YOUNG UNIVERSITIES Deakin has continued its climb up the Times Higher Education (THE) list of the world s top 100 universities under 50 years old, cracking the top 50 for the first time. Deakin has been ranked number one in Victoria, number six in Australia and number 45 in the world. The news confirms Deakin s rise in the ranks of the very best young universities worldwide, after prestigious international university rankings organisation Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) last year listed Deakin at number 50 on its Top 50 under 50. Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander says at only 40 years young, Deakin owes its continuing success to a strong vision for the future and its wonderful staff, researchers, students, communities and partners. In the past two years, Deakin has leapt 21 places from 66 to 45 in the list of the top 100 universities under 50 years old, Professor den Hollander says. Times Higher Education says younger universities are bullish and they have no fear of the future or of older rivals and I couldn t agree more. Deakin is ready to drive the innovation that will create the jobs of the future. DEAKIN.EDU.AU 5

8 PATHWAYS TO POSTGRADUATE STUDY There are many different pathways to postgraduate study. For some it s a natural progression after completing an undergraduate degree. For others, postgraduate study comes much later, sometimes many years after first studying at university. In some cases, you may be able to use your extensive work experience to apply direct for a postgraduate coursework degree without having completed an undergraduate course. Whether you re a recent graduate wanting to gain a point of difference or an experienced professional seeking to advance your career, there is a Deakin postgraduate course for you. Coursework or research? In general, postgraduate study falls into two broad categories coursework and research. Coursework degrees are similar to undergraduate degrees, in that you study a series of units or subjects, each with specific coursework and assessments. A research degree involves completing an approved program of research under the guidance of one or more supervisors within a set time period. NICHOLAS HARRISON BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (INTERNATIONAL) GRADUATE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM MANAGER, ORICA Completing the Deakin MBA (International) created a great opportunity to expand and contribute to the multinational company I work for. Being versed in current research, management techniques and strategic methods in the contemporary environment has given me and my company a great advantage. 6 DEAKIN UNIVERSITY

9 KATE GLEDHILL PUBLIC HEALTH GRADUATE RESEARCH STUDENT I chose this area of study because public health is so vitally important in Australia and, given my current job as a clinician in the public health sector, I thought it was essential that I have a greater understanding of the processes and policies that shape our health care system. Research degree pathways To enrol in a research degree you usually need to have completed an undergraduate degree with honours or a master s degree with a substantial research component. Other qualifications may be accepted if the relevant faculty considers them equivalent and you can demonstrate evidence of your research ability. Coursework degree pathways Coursework at Deakin offers flexibility, from just one unit of study to graduate certificate, graduate diploma or a master s degree. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to apply directly for a master s degree or graduate diploma, or you may use the degree as a stepping stone. For more details, please visit deakin.edu.au/courses. Save time and money with prior learning credits Credit for prior learning is the term used when the University allows prior study or work experience to count towards your Deakin degree, saving you time and money, as well as expanding your education choices. There are two aspects to credit transfer and recognition: Credit may be transferred to your program from completed or partly completed studies you have undertaken at other accredited institutions; and Credit may be granted on the basis of knowledge and skills acquired through informal learning, such as in the workplace. 10 POSTGRADUATE COURSEWORK STUDY If you re studying in order to change or advance your career, or meet a professional requirement, a coursework program may be the right choice for you. Coursework degrees involve studying a series of units or subjects, each with specific coursework and assessments. Graduate certificate Develop skills in a specialised field that might not directly relate to your undergraduate degree. Graduate certificates can sometimes be used as a direct pathway to postgraduate studies. Graduate diploma Specialise and focus on a vocation with a graduate diploma. You usually need to have completed a bachelor s degree or equivalent. You can also gain entry with professional or industry experience, or other relevant approved qualifications. Master s degree by coursework Designed to cater to professionals, these courses have the added benefit of providing an environment for networking with likeminded people. Other coursework degrees Deakin offers other coursework options, including the Doctor of Business Administration, which is designed for experienced business executives, with a focus on original research in business and professional practice. New in 2015, the Master of Science (Research) comprises a unique combination of coursework and research, providing an ideal pathway between undergraduate study and a doctoral degree. 11 WENDI BRADSHAW NURSING PRACTICE GRADUATE CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST, MONASH HEALTH The course allowed me to progress professionally through the investigation of practical clinical improvements at a unit level, giving important credibility to further my research and education interests. It has also served as a catalyst to advance my career trajectory and I would very much like to commence further studies at PhD level within the next 18 months. COURSEWORK DEGREE CONTACT HOURS Contact hours for a coursework degree can vary depending on the type of course and your mode of study. For example, cloud (online) learning students are advised to complete about 10 hours of study per week, for each unit. If you are a campus-enrolled student, most units require three contact hours each week, plus up to seven hours of independent study time each week. HONOURS Honours is a specialised year of undergraduate study that allows you to draw together the theory and practical skills gained in your undergraduate studies and develop an in-depth knowledge of your particular discipline, through research and additional coursework. At Deakin you can apply for honours in one of two ways: On-course honours award This type of honours award recognises outstanding achievement in a bachelor s degree program of four or more years, which has an embedded honours component. Research-based honours award This type of honours award allows you to undertake specialised research and research training on a course that allows an additional year of study. 14 FUNDING YOUR POSTGRADUATE STUDY A postgraduate education is an invaluable investment in your future and it s important to understand the costs involved. There are many options available to help eligible students, including FEE-HELP, government assistance and scholarships. The cost of study is matched by the rewards of career advancement, higher salaries and greater job satisfaction. What is the postgraduate course fee? Tuition fees are based on the course you enrol in. You can find course, unit and fee information using the course search tool at deakin.edu.au/courses. There are two types of fee: Fee-Paying Place (FPP) and Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP). Fee-Paying Place (FPP) FPP is a place that is not subsidised by the government, so you pay the full cost of the course. As a domestic fee-paying student you may be eligible to defer repayments through the Australian taxation system, through FEE- HELP. Your employer may also contribute to the cost of study if the course is related to your current position. Annual course fees for FPPs in 2016 are based on an annual study load, regardless of your unit selection. Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) Some postgraduate courses at Deakin offer CSP places, where the government pays a proportion of tuition costs. CSP fees are indicative because they are calculated based on your unit selection. Indicative CSP course fees for 2016 will be available in late 2015 please visit deakin.edu.au/fees for the most up-to-date information. Deferring fee payment with the FEE-HELP loan program FEE-HELP is a loan program that helps you defer all or part of your tuition fee payment. For postgraduate courses, there is no real interest charged on your debt however it is indexed annually to maintain its real value in line with changes to the cost of living as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Am I eligible for FEE-HELP? You are eligible for FEE-HELP assistance if you: are enrolled in a fee-paying postgraduate coursework program (not research) are not a Commonwealth supported student are an Australian citizen or a holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa, (holders of other permanent visas are not eligible for FEE-HELP unless you re undertaking a bridging course for overseas trained professionals) meet the Tax File Number (TFN) requirements have not exceeded the maximum indexed FEE-HELP limit. FEE-HELP debts are added to any existing HELP debts to form a single HELP debt with the Commonwealth. 27 KERRYN IRELAND-JENKIN CLINICAL LEADERSHIP STUDENT MEDICAL PRACTITIONER (SPECIALIST PATHOLOGIST) Deakin delivers world-class education with very flexible study arrangements, highly suited to busy professionals wishing to engage in further study. For me, the combination of the online learning environment along with residential study units at Deakin Management Centre has been superb. My experience has been that Deakin offers flexible study arrangements, which have allowed me to increase or decrease my subject load according to other commitments. COMPUTER STANDARDS To fully engage with these learning experiences, students need to have access to and be able to use internet-connected devices. There are minimum computer standards required for your computer, connectivity and your computing capability for effective study at Deakin. Note that students who choose cloud (online) learning will generally need to attend examinations at Deakin campuses or other specified locations. For more information on computer standards, please visit deakin.edu.au/study-at-deakin/ apply/computer-requirements. DEAKIN.EDU.AU 25
