1 Design Document for Online Course Cynthia Stoner 11/2611 Course/Program Title: HRD 110 Freshman Seminar Course goals: This Freshman Seminar course will include introductions to technology and support services on campus, training in study skills, time management, note taking, preparation of a presentation, career development, and research. Course objectives: At course completion students Determine and utilize the appropriate campus computer resources for at least three common study tasks. Describe time management strategies, and plan their workload using a time management strategy. Identify a note taking strategy that is appropriate to their preferred learning style, and demonstrate that strategy. Identify their preferred learning style, and list at least three strategies to use their learning style to improve their academic success. Intended audience: The audience is incoming freshman planning on pursuing a computer science major. These students will have to meet minimum computer use skills, including the ability to send and receive s, and the ability to use a web browser. The learners for this freshman orientation class are computer science majors. Most of them are incoming freshman, who will be Gen Y learners. However there is also a scattering of returning adult learners in computer science. The freshman orientation course system was designed because the success of the incoming student population was found to increase if they were given an orientation to college services and training in study skills. This indicates that many of the incoming students need assistance in bringing their skills up to a college level. One challenge for designing this course is that the primary learner motivation is that the class is required for graduation. An additional hurdle is that some learners will feel that they have prior knowledge when in fact their skills are not sufficient for the college level. One method used to increase motivation is to maximize the relevance of the materials by timing their presentation to coincide with their use in other classes. Most of the incoming students (with the exception of the returning adult learners) think that online delivery will be easy and they won t have to work as much in an online course. The
2 syllabus and introductory course materials should clarify that this will not be the case. Some of the returning adult students are intimidated by learning online, but it is the only way they can fit classes into their schedule. There are training workshops available to help learners master the basics of the online interface. The literature indicates that Gen Y students, who make up the majority of these learners, prefer something more interactive than sitting and watching lectures. In the online course, where possible time will be spent on explaining why the material is relevant. Additionally, discussions, Voice thread, and other tools will be used to foster both community and interaction. Delivery method: Fully online
3 Instructional approach/strategies/methods: Instructional materials: Lesson content outline Topic Goal/Objectives Activities Media Readings/Resources Assessment Introduction and Icebreaker To become familiar with the course, and moodle To begin building a community by having them introduce themselves Explain the course goals, format, and requirements Navigate Moodle and successfully post to the discussion board Add a student profile picture and information within Moodle Explain a little about your classmates Review the course syllabus Create a profile in Moodle Introductions exercise: For this discussion please introduce yourself.
