SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT How Online Learning is Different Image: University of Western Sydney
SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT How Online Learning is Different In-person Instruction Occurs in real time Class participation requirements vary Discussion more spontaneous Immediate feedback on class discussion More than one way to make an impression Sage on the stage SPD Online Program Asynchronous All students are required to participate Discussion more thoughtful Delayed feedback All impressions are created via writing Guide on the side
SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Student Expectations Dedicate the time necessary for each class including reading and writing posts and assignments about hours per week per course. Proactively seek out information and help. Be comfortable with your computer. Know how to use your word processor and programs. Have a back-up plan print out material, back-up files, and find other resources for computing and Internet connectivity.
SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Student Expectations (cont d) Focus on the quality of your writing Know when to use scholarly voice and citations. Be aware of and follow all course and administrative policies and deadlines. Ensure that we can reach you via and phone. Follow principles of Netiquette
SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT What is Netiquette Net + Etiquette. Rules or codes of conduct with regard to communication that takes place via the Internet. Know that no one can see your face, hear your voice or read your mind. Careful with jokes. No writing in ALL CAPS. Respond when addressed. More info in SPD Online Student Support website.

Making a Post SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Word Processor vs. Blackboard Composing in Blackboard is fine for short responses, but you might get timed out during longer posts, so copy your text before you click Submit. Composing in a word processor allows you to save messages outside of Blackboard, which is useful for future reference. Also, a good word processor will have a built-in thesaurus. BUT
SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Some Word Caveats Sometimes material from Word is not compatible with the Blackboard discussion board: Tables will not paste properly; build tables within Blackboard. Colors might not be true; change the color within Blackboard. Styled text (bold, italics, underlining, etc.) should display well or you could apply text styles from within Blackboard. You can always practice posting material in the SPD Online Course.
SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Cite Your Sources Either create an in-text citation or put the source at the bottom of the post. Add hyperlinks so others can find your material. Not sure about citation? Visit the SPD Library Guide (info to follow). Cite Your Sources

SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Last Words of Advice on the Discussion Board Read your instructor s discussion board rubric about quantity, timing and other expectations. Post early in the week you will soon come to understand why you don t want to be a weekend student. Don t post anything without reading others posts first. Cite your sources.
