1 IMPROVING HEALTH FACILITY INFRASTRUCTURE (IHFI) Electrical Infrastructure Rehabilitation HUEH Hospital Emergency Ward Port-au-Prince, Haiti Case Study December 2012
2 INTRODUCTION Built in 1918, the 540-bed HUEH is the largest teaching hospital in Haiti 2
3 Reconstruction After the 2010 earthquake, the USAID/Haiti dedicated funds to support reconstruction efforts. In 2012, reconstruction work at HUEH hospital focused on: - the emergency ward, - the maternity ward, - the surgical ward, and - the power plant. 3 3

6 ACTIVITIES Rewiring circuits, improving lighting and ventilation, ensuring safe wiring 6
7 Summary of activities At HUEH Emergency Ward IHFI renovated 21,000 ft 2 of space, installing: 150 electrical outlets 160 fluorescent fixtures 60 ceiling fans 3 new air conditioning units 10 air conditioning units repaired As-built drawings for all installations. 7

9 Exhaust fan repair (4 x4 ) This fan is mounted on top of a vertical exhaust chimney and aspirates the hot air from near the ceiling of the emergency ward, facilitating the cooling of the floor by convection. IHFI completed the repair in April

20 Conclusions High-impact low-cost interventions were effective, and are expected to be replicated in the rest of HUEH and other hospitals. Use of locally procured, readily available electrical components reduces time to completion and facilitates future maintenance and expansion efforts. Simplified distribution designs allow for expansion by using surface mounted components. Safer and more comfortable emergency ward for the patients. 20
