5 Task 1 Military Listening (English Version) This morning the Ministry of Defence reported an incident at a barracks in Germany. The barracks is on the outskirts of Osnabruck in Northern Germany. A group of approximately 100 people marched up to the front gate. They were demonstrating against the British Army s involvement in Iraq. They tried to stop people from leaving or entering the barracks. They shouted at British personnel and tried to block the road. The duty officer telephoned the German police who arrived at the barracks straight away. The German police told the crowd to leave the area straight away. After half an hour the crowd went away. Many of the British families in the area were angry at the demonstration. This is because many British soldiers stationed in the barracks are currently in Iraq. The children who saw the demonstration were crying. They cannot understand why people are angry with the soldiers. 148 words 1. Where did the reported incident take place? a. At a barracks in Germany. b. At a barracks in the UK. c. At a barracks in Iraq. d. In Northern Ireland. 2. Why were the people demonstrating? a. Against the British Army s involvement in Afghanistan. b. Against the British Army s involvement in Iraq. c. 165 words SLP1 Castilian Spanish Tapescripts SC/07-08/SUR/Paper A Page 3 of 5
7 Task 2 Civilian Listening (English Version) You get the following message on your answer phone. Hello. This is xxxx from the garage. I tried to phone you at work but you were not in the office. I have inspected your car. The accident must have been a very bad one. You are very lucky that you were not injured at all. Unfortunately there is a lot of damage. I can repair the bonnet and headlights, but the engine is badly damaged. I am not sure whether it is possible to repair the engine. Anyway, I think it would be cheaper to put in a new engine. I know that engines are expensive, but at least you would be able to keep your car. The only problem is that it will take me 2 weeks to do the work. Perhaps you need to hire a car. I have a couple of good cars at the garage and can give you a good price! 145 words 1. Why has the speaker left the message on the answer phone? a. He could not get hold of you on your mobile. b. He could not get hold of you on your work number. c. He needs to speak so urgently he cannot wait for you to call him. d. He is going away for a couple of weeks. 2. Why does the speaker say that you must have been lucky? a. The chassis has not been damaged. b. The police have not taken the car as evidence. c. Your car is not a write-off. d. You were not injured at all. 3. What damage is the speaker able to repair? a. The boot and rear lights. b. The wing mirror and side door. c. The bonnet and headlights. d. 8 Task 2 Civilian Listening (Spanish Version) Hola. He inspeccionado su coche. 130 words SLP1 Castilian Spanish Tapescripts SC/07-08/SUR/Paper A Page 5 of 5
