2 Dear Yale Traveler Looking for a way to bond with your family, while celebrating the beginning of 2015? Have your family join Yale Educational Travel on an educational program specifically designed for multi-generations Costa Rica Holiday Adventure: December 26, 2014 to January 4, With its mist-shrouded cloud forests, amazing plant, bird and wildlife and splendid coasts and mountains, Costa Rica is a great natural treasure of the Americas and a wonderful destination for families. Situated at the junction of North and South America, this peaceful democratic country has become a world model for national park development. With over 25 percent of its land consisting of reserves, Costa Rica is home to 850 species of birds, hundreds of waterfalls, pristine beaches, tropical rain, dry and cloud forests along with a wide array of animals from white-faced capuchin monkeys to sloths and iguanas. This is a program that is fun for young explorers as well as adults who enjoy hiking and learning about tropical wildlife and forests. Laurie Santos, Associate Professor of Psychology at Yale will accompany the group together with local naturalist guides. Dr. Santos will give talks on the evolutionary origins of human cognition as well as other informative lectures. She will surely add a great deal to your family s Costa Rican experience. This tour features two distinct locations: the famed Monteverde Cloud Forest in the Tilarán Mountains and Costa Rica s northern Pacific Coast. There will be safaris by boat and rafts down tropical rivers looking for monkeys, parrots, crocodiles and other wildlife and hikes over suspended bridges in the rain forest canopy. In addition, visit a butterfly farm, marvel at the immense crater of Poás Volcano, one of the largest in the world, sail aboard a catamaran along the Pacific Coast, and ride horseback to Rincón de la Vieja National Park, home to an intriguing combination of volcanic geological wonders and pristine tropical forests. The hotel in the Pacific region is situated on a secluded bay in the Gulf of Papagayo, Guanacaste with direct access to the beach. This program is sure to create lasting family memories with spacious family accommodations that have been chosen for comfort. Travel with Yale Educational Travel for an opportunity for multiple generations to learn together. Witness your children or grandchildren exploring this exotic region, practicing their Spanish and learning about tropical birds and wildlife. We look forward to welcoming you on this adventure! This trip is sure to sell out fast. Please visit to register now. Or call Yale Educational Travel with any questions at all at (203) or edtravel@yale.edu. Laurie Santos Yale lecturer, Laurie Santos is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Yale University and the Director of Yale University's Comparative Cognition Laboratory. She received her BA in Psychology and Biology from Harvard University and her PhD in Psychology also from Harvard. Her research explores the evolutionary origins of human cognition by studying the cognitive capacities present in non-human primates. Professor Santos's scientific research has been featured in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Economist, Forbes, The New Yorker, New Scientist, Smithsonian, and Discover. She has also won numerous awards, both for her scientific achievements and for her teaching and mentorship. She is the recipient of Yale University's Arthur Greer Memorial Prize for Outstanding Junior Faculty and was recently voted one of Popular Science Magazine's "Brilliant 10" Young Minds. She says: "We live in an extraordinary time-one like no other that humans have lived in before us-where we have a fabulous technique for studying the mysteries of life: the scientific method. As a cognitive scientist, I have tools to study what makes us and other animals tick, and to get at the roots of human nature. What I'd most like to convey to my students is how incredibly cool this is, and how lucky we are to be a part of it." What To Expect This exclusive expedition is for the families of Yale Alumni and friends. It is especially designed for families (parents and grandparents) with children between the ages of 7 and 17 who are interested in nature and would enjoy exploring and learning about the vegetation and wildlife of some of Costa Rica s finest national parks and reserves. Naturalist-led walks and creative activities provide an enriching introduction to Costa Rica s natural history and cultural heritage. It helps to be enthusiastic about outdoor adventure, intellectually curious, and comfortable traveling as part of a group. Typically, the weather is hot and humid in the lowlands (mid 80s); and springlike in the highlands. While at the national parks and reserves, there is a daily program of nature exploration, guided rain forest walks and educational discussions. Travel is by motorcoach, van, raft, boat, catamaran and horseback (alternative transportation by van is available for those not wishing to ride horseback) with daily walks of up to two miles in length, sometimes over uneven terrain, at a leisurely pace suitable for nature study and field observation. This trip is described as active to moderately active. Poás Volcano Sincerely, Kathy Edersheim 87 Sr. Director International Alumni Relations and Travel Golfo de Papagayo
