This entry-level program will provide you with the basic agronomic knowledge & skills required for many positions within the agriculture industry. You may lack specific knowledge in agronomy, or you may have agronomy experience in another country but require specific training in Western Canadian farming practices. 4 online courses 2 residencies Tuition: $799/course (includes all textbooks & course materials) Late fee for registering after deadline: $75 Crop Production Systems An overview of basic botany and the production cycle for agricultural crops in Western Canada. You will learn the steps of land preparation, seeding, harvesting, and storage of grains, oilseeds, pulses, and hay crops. Their identity, uses, and markets will also be covered. Insect & Disease Management Become acquainted with the major insect and disease species affecting field crops in the Canadian prairies. Understand the concept of integrated pest management and practices utilized to prevent and manage outbreaks. Introductory Soils & Crop Nutrition This introductory course will provide you with an overview of basic soil formation, soil quality, crop nutrition, and fertilizer practices in Western Canada. Weed Fundamentals Gain the ability to identify common prairie weeds, understand their characteristics, and how these weeds impact various ecosystems. Understand the value of integrated weed management, and options for preventative, cultural and physical weed management. Data Management for Field Scouting This course will be an introduction to the technologies used in data collection for field scouting. This will include GPS, GIS, digital photography, and data management systems. Field School This field school will be the capstone course of the Agronomy Certificate. In this course, you will demonstrate practical, hands-on application of the competencies gained in the prerequisite courses. All five other courses from the certificate must be completed prior to qualifying for Field School. All Agronomy Certificate courses (excluding Field School) can be taken on a stand-alone basis. Students will integrate concepts and be able to make general recommendations regarding crop production. This program will prepare students to work in agricultural retail and agronomic support positions, as field technicians or to better manage their own farms. 5 online courses Tuition: $799/course plus textbooks Late fee for registering after deadline: $75 Integrated Pest Management This course is designed to advance your knowledge and the application of integrated pest management concepts in agricultural cropping systems. Effective pest management is much more than just applying a pesticide. In this course, you will integrate all aspects of pest and crop management and see how ecological principles play an important role in pest management. The learning process will involve selected readings, assignments, discussions and a comprehensive term project. Soil, Water & Fertility Management Students in this course will study the potential negative effects of agricultural practices on soil and water resources and discuss beneficial management practices that can minimize environmental impact. They will also investigate advanced practices in fertility management, learn to diagnose nutrient deficiencies, and gain the knowledge required for development of effective fertilizer recommendations. 8 > VETERINARY PRACTICE MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE Olds College provides NEW program to meet the Veterinary Industry s continuing education needs! Over the last year, Olds College has been rolling out a new Certificate program for those working in the Veterinary Industry. The Veterinary Practice Management Certificate is offered in an online format that makes it possible for students to continue working while they complete their certificate! Each course is led by an instructor with years of hands-on experience working as a Veterinary Practice Manager. This ensures that students receive constant coaching and feedback. Students also have the opportunity to interact with other course participants and the instructor via online forums designed to further the critical thinking skills required to become an innovative and effective business leader within the veterinary industry. You will learn how to determine staffing requirements, create job descriptions, and recruit effectively. 12 > EQUINE SHORT COURSES Driving School - Level I This clinic provides an understanding of the fundamentals of driving and basic horse psychology. Harness parts, equipment, safety problem solving, horse behaviour, communicating with the driving horse, and starting and retraining horses are all discussed. This course offers you hands-on experience in harnessing, ground driving, hooking to equipment, and driving a single horse and team. An excellent opportunity for the beginner and experienced driver of both light and heavy horses to expand their knowledge. ** Horses will be supplied. This course gives you, a horse owner, the ability to give your horse the comfort for sore muscles and related soft tissue stress, allowing it to return to work sooner. Some equine anatomy knowledge is recommended for this course. ** It is necessary to bring your own horse. It can also be expensive and time consuming. This course will help save you time and money. This 15-week theory and hands-on learning course promotes entry-level careers in the racehorse and breeding industry. No horse experience needed. Just bring your passion for horses. Description This program is a serious introduction to horse racing in Alberta and the basics of working as a racetrack groom. You will learn horse handling techniques, grooming, feeding and nutrition, conformation and body conditioning, health care, first-aid and bandaging techniques, tack and equipment usage, and stable management for the flat race track and the harness race track.
