1 CITY OF ENGLEWOOD (CO) invites applications for the position of: Assistant Fire Marshal An Equal Opportunity Employer SALARY: $ $44.34 Hourly $70, $92, Annually OPENING DATE: 06/23/15 CLOSING DATE: 07/14/15 05:00 PM OVERVIEW: The Assistant Fire Marshal manages the fire prevention program under the direction of the Fire Marshal and performs field and office work in fire and life safety prevention. Responsibility includes the enforcement of fire and life safety codes, ordinances, and regulations. The Assistant Fire Marshal conducts inspections and plan reviews to ensure administration and enforcement of safety codes and ordinances, and preparation of associated reports concerning safety and hazardous materials. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Assists in the identification, development and implementation of division programs, policies and procedures relative to the assignment. Acts as the Fire & Life Safety program liaison to field inquiries regarding fire prevention, inspections, and codes/regulation from citizens and business owners. Plans, schedules and provides training for other City departments, outside jurisdictions and the public. Training may include fire safety inspection, fire investigation, and fire prevention public awareness programs. Maintains consistent and current knowledge to effectively interpret the International Fire Code, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and City ordinances. Remains current in national trends and techniques relative to fire protection and life safety issues. Assists the Fire Marshal in the administration and enforcement of all City adopted fire,

2 building, and safety codes, standards, and ordinances through the review of construction plans, inspections, follow-up reviews, and legal remedies as necessary. Performs inspections of buildings, fire protection systems, public and private water/hydrant distribution systems, fire alarm systems, standpipe/fire pump systems, dry and wet chemical extinguishing systems, flammable liquid and gas storage tanks, hazardous chemical storage and handling systems, fire department communications systems, and smoke control and removal systems to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations. Manages and coordinates the Fire & Life Safety Inspection program including occupancy records management. Provides training, guidance, and assistance personnel in regard to company assigned inspections. Conducts all necessary re-inspections to follow-up in areas identified by the Fire Marshal. Reviews plan submittals of business, industrial, and special use projects concerning fire suppression, detection, and control systems. Identify requirements and deficiencies related to fire protection and life safety issues. Coordinates with the Community Development / Building and Safety Division regarding permitting, plan review, and inspections. Maintains detailed and accurate occupancy records, inspection data, hazardous materials SARA inventory, and other pertinent records for the City and fire department. Complete assigned records and reports and communicate findings through the use of computer generated reports and graphs. Participate in continuing education, professional classes, conferences, and associations. Other Duties & Responsibilities Acts as Fire Marshal in their absence. Performs other duties as assigned and required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education: Bachelor s Degree in Fire Science, Business, Public Administration from an accredited College or University required, Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering preferred. Work Experience: Two (2) years of work experience in the Fire Protection Engineering field required. Fire Prevention or Fire Bureau experience; experience dealing with public, contractors, and business owners

3 preferred. Fire and Life Safety program management experience preferred. Firefighter and hazardous materials experience also preferred. Certifications and/or Licensures: International Code Council(ICC) or NFPA Fire Inspector II, International Code Council (ICC) or NFPA Plans Examiner I, State of Colorado Fire Suppression Inspector, State of Colorado School Inspector, Hazardous Material Operations, required. Required Driver s License: Must possess a valid Colorado driver s license and a clear/ acceptable MVR An equivalent combination of related education, training and relevant job experience may be considered Knowledge Working knowledge of Fire and Life Safety rules, general order, policies and procedures The physical layout of city streets, water distribution system, pre-fire plans Fire behavior, basic suppression strategy and tactics, and building construction Fire and Building Codes, NFPA Standards, Regulations/ordinances Basic knowledge of: Records management Applications software for Windows environment, Microsoft Office preferred Skills and Abilities Computer Skills Strong computer skills needed for data entry and computer related engineering & support software, visual aids, radio and telecommunications equipment. Communication Strong customer and public relations services skills needed to interact with business owners, contractors, and the public. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with Community Development / Building and Safety Division personnel and other City departments. Strong skills required in reading, analyzing, interpreting and problem solving using written instructions, general business periodicals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to prepare written and oral reports. Analytical - Strong skills needed to identify problem areas in the field, on written communications, and within plan designs. Must have a firm understanding of the intent as well as the independent and interdependent relationship between

4 building codes, fire codes, national standards and hazardous materials compliance regulations. Mechanical- Strong skills needed to use ladders, hand tools, measuring devices, and electronic devices. Project Management - Strong skills needed to organize, schedule, and negotiate meetings with public, business owners, and individuals. Strong ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks successfully with a strong attention to detail, with minimal supervision and guidance. Mathematical - Strong skills needed for statistical analysis, hydraulic calculations, and trend analysis. Ability to demonstrate an independent and highly motivated work ethic, with the ability to work consistently and confidently under pressure. Must be physically fit for duty, as determined by division physical fitness and medical standards.
