1 BOARD OF EDUCATION Attachment: Discussion 11 PALO ALTO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Date: TO: FROM: PREPARED BY: Glenn Max McGee, Superintendent Markus Autrey, Associate Superintendent - Educational Services Katherine Baker, Chief Academic Officer, Secondary Education SUBJECT: Approval of New High School Course for STRATEGIC PLAN INITIATIVE Academic Excellence and Learning Board Policy 6011 Academic Standards Board Policy 6141 Curriculum Development and Evaluation Board Policy 6143 Courses of Study RECOMMENDATION Pending discussion at this meeting, it is recommended the Board of Education approve the following new Gunn High School elective at the January 12, 2016, regular meeting. BEAM (Business, Entrepreneurship, and Math) BACKGROUND According to Board Policy 6143, the Superintendent shall recommend courses of study to the Board of Education. This year, staff is recommending a new elective course at the high school level, Business, Entrepreneurship, and Math. Input from content area teachers, Instructional Council (Instructional Supervisors across content areas), the school community (Site Council, PTSA, students), and the greater community (local businesses) was included in the design of the recommended course. The site principal reviewed the recommendations and approved the course for consideration by the Math Steering Committee. The Steering Committee reviewed the proposed course and recommended approval to the Associate Superintendent of Educational Services. BEAM (Business, Entrepreneurship, and Math) Rationale This course will provide an opportunity for young people to connect with the innovation community of Palo Alto. There is a special interest in offering these opportunities to historically underrepresented minority students. The class will bridge the gap between the teen population and our highly sophisticated business community. Students will be provided with real life, hands-on business mathematics experience in finance and quantitative marketing, as well as experience with social media and entrepreneurship. Students will be able to build their own networks, experience business mentorship opportunities, and give

2 back to their community. This course will engage the private sector in creating a true public-private partnership model in the community, and will support teen well-being, self-advocacy, self-confidence, self-esteem, and community engagement. Description (Attachment A) The Gunn Business, Entrepreneurship, and Math course (Gunn BEAM) teaches students how math applies to the real world through business applications and project-based learning. During first semester, students will study business, marketing, and finance modules developed in collaboration with Ernst & Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers. During second semester, students gain hands-on experience through their volunteer work for local small businesses and non-profit organizations. Students give back to the community by creating a public-private partnership between Henry M. Gunn High School and local businesses. Students also receive mentorship and start-up networking support from private sector firms.
