1 CASTLE HIGH SCHOOL BUSINESS DEPARTMENT COURSE DESCRIPTIONS DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP/INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS AND TECHNOLOGY GRADE 9-12 Digital Citizenship/Information Communications and Technology prepares students to use computer hardware and software in an efficient, responsible, and appropriate manner. Students will develop touch typing, word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, database, and communication skills. Students will learn to manipulate the computer keyboard with speed and accuracy through the development and/or refinement of touch keyboarding skills. Students will learn about hardware and operating systems that support application software. Students will learn software concepts and develop computer skills using a Windows-based professional suite (Microsoft Office), which includes word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, database, and graphics applications. Students will learn additional concepts and applications dealing with software integration, Internet usage, and information about future technology trends. Students will use their knowledge of hardware, software, and computer input and output technologies to complete career-based activities and written communication activities requiring problem solving and critical thinking. The assignments and projects included in this course will enable students to enhance their math, reading, listening, writing, speaking, and information presentation skills. INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS GRADES 9-12 This one-year course introduces the student to the world of business. The goals of Business Foundations are to introduce students to the way the American economy operates, to teach students basic skills for acquiring employment, and to educate students about the importance of being a financially responsible consumer. 2 INTRO TO ACCOUNTING Accounting is called the language of business. People involved at all levels in the operation of a business must understand and use this language. Although many people use accounting skills as a way to earn a living, all people need accounting knowledge for personal financial activities such as budgeting, balancing a checkbook, or completing income tax returns. Accounting I is an excellent elective for students interested in pursuing a career in any area of business. This course involves understanding, analyzing, and recording business transactions and preparing, analyzing, and interpreting financial reports as a basis for decision making. The theory and concepts presented in this class provide students with the foundation for successful completion of a beginning-level college accounting class. Students will frequently use computers in Accounting I for a variety of automated accounting applications. COMPUTER PROGRAMMING 1 Computer Programming is a one-semester course. The focus of this course is the development of problem solving skills and computer implementations. Student-oriented computer languages and problem-solving tools are reviewed. Structured solutions to common business and math problems are explored. Participation in this course is encouraged if a student is interested in a computer-intense career. Prerequisites: Digital Citizenship/Information Communications and Technology Algebra I DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP GRADE Digital Citizenship prepares students to use computer hardware and software in an effective and appropriate manner. Students will develop touch typing skills and knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, and communications software. Students establish what it means to be a good digital citizen and how to use technology appropriately. Perquisites: None STUDENTS WHO HAVE RECEIVED 1 OR 2 CREDITS FOR DIGITAL COMMUNICATION TOOLS CANNOT ENROLL IN THIS CLASS. Castle High School Business Department Course Descriptions Page 2

3 PERSONAL FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Personal Financial Responsibility addresses the identification and management of personal financial resources to meet the financial needs and wants of individuals and families, considering a broad range of economic, social, cultural, technological, environmental, and maintenance factors. This course helps students build skills in financial responsibility and decision making; analyze personal standards, needs, wants, and goals; identify sources of income, saving and investing; understand banking, budgeting, record-keeping and managing risk, insurance and credit card debt. WEB DESIGN Web Design is a business course that provides instruction in the basic principles of web design using a professional-standard web authoring software program. Students will develop hands-on skills that will enable them to create appealing and cutting-edge multimedia. Students will also be instructed in basic web design concepts including audience analysis, hierarchy layout and design techniques, software integration, and publishing. This course is a prerequisite for students who want to help maintain the Castle High School web site. Prerequisite: Digital Citizenship/Information Communications and Technology ADVANCED PROGRAMMING AND WEB DESIGN Advanced Programming and Web Design is a two-semester course that provides instruction in the principles of web design using HTML/XHTML, current/emerging software programs, and explores and builds skills in Visual Basic programming. Areas of instruction include audience analysis, hierarchy layout and design techniques, software integration, and publishing. Fundamental concepts of programming are provided through explanations and effects of commands, and hands-on utilization of lab equipment to product correct output. This course introduces the structured techniques necessary for efficient solution of business-related computer programming logic problems and coding solutions into a high-level language. Instructional strategies should include peer teaching, collaborative instruction, project-based learning activities, and school-community projects. The course offers students an opportunity to apply skills in a laboratory environment. Programming demonstrations of business problems and solutions techniques will be reviewed. 4 Recommended Prerequisites: Digital Citizenship, Web Design I, and Programming I Credits: 1 credit per semester, maximum of 2 semesters, maximum of 2 credits Counts as a Directed Elective or Elective for the General, Core 40, Core 40 with Academic Honors and Core 40 with Technical Honors diplomas This course is aligned with postsecondary courses for Dual Credit Qualifies as a Quantitative Reasoning course for the General, Core 40, AHD, and THD diplomas Prerequisites: Web Design and Computer Programming 1 COMPUTER TECH SUPPORT Computer Tech Support allows students to explore how computers work. Students learn the functionality of hardware and software components as well as suggested best practices in maintenance and safety issues. Through hands on activities and labs, students learn how to assemble and configure a computer, install operating systems and software, and troubleshoot hardware and software problems. Prerequisites: Digital Citizenship/Information Communications and Technology BUSINESS LAW AND ETHICS Business Law and Ethics provides an overview of the legal system. Topics covered include: Basics of the Law, Contract Law, Employment Law, Personal Law, and Property Law. Both criminal and civil trial procedures are presented. Instructional strategies include case studies, professional mentoring, job shadowing, field trips, guest speakers, and Internet projects. PRINCIPLES OF MARKETING Marketing is a business course that provides a basic introduction to the scope and importance of marketing in the global economy. This course is based on the Marketing Education Framework which includes economic, human resource, and marketing foundations needed in daily living. 5 BUSINESS COOPERATIVE EXPERIENCES GRADE 12 Business Cooperative Experiences is a career and technical education business course that provides opportunities for students to gain skills and knowledge through on-the-job training and related classroom instruction. Time allocations are a minimum of fifteen hours per week of work-based learning and approximately five hours per week of schoolbased instruction. The classroom instruction may be a blend of both group and individual instruction planned and organized with activities focused on career objectives and on-thejob training. Instructional strategies may include in-baskets, minibaskets, LAPS, and workflow simulations. Students participating in these structured experiences will follow class, school, State, and Federal guidelines. Students will be paid in accordance with all State and Federal laws pertaining to employment. Credit will be granted for both the related instruction and on-the-job training.
