DC planning for the next 5 10 years
Topics to be Discussed Introduc=on Indirect Drivers Technology Direct Drivers Data Center DC Management DC Opera=ons s and Disaster Recovery 2
Introduc=on The future of data processing is affected by many personnel, process and technology trends. All of these trends directly and indirectly impact the data center. The following influen=al factors have been defined by industry experts and will determine what the data center will look like in the future. 3
General Observa=ons The life of a typical data center is around years; If the datacenter was built in or around 2000, then the space, power, density, and cooling did not unfold as expected; Most likely one or more of these variables is now in short supply or is a huge overhang; The space needed to support the current processing capabili=es is shrinking; Inversely, the power per square foot is increasing; Need for space will con=nue to increase, but at a slower rate; Users should expect power density to possibly double again in years. 4
Indirect Drivers - Technology Mobile Devices anywhere, any=me access; Internet of Things by 2020 over 50 billion 1 ; Big Data increasing volume and types; Processing Workloads increased demand; Shorter Applica=on Release Cycles increased global compe==on; Smart So[ware automated opera=ons; so[ware defined data centers/servers/storage/networks; Solid- State Drive Technology increased performance; Social ing, Crowdsourcing client driven; So[ware Drives Hardware apps will remain focus; Density and power demands increasing more work per unit of space; Cost of bandwidth and data transfer to drop exponen=ally. 1 h^p://share.cisco.com/internet- of- things.html 5
Direct Drivers - Data Center Compu=ng as needed provisioning; Convergence of in- sourced and third- party outsourced data center services; Business Efficiency streamlined processes; Improved Performance shortened response =mes; Agile support changing business parameters; Sustainability efficient environment; Power Reduc=on need to reduce power requirement per unit of workload; improved PUE; Eco- Friendly green materials, prac=ces, etc. Legisla=ve and/or Regulatory adherence; Advanced DCIM automated responses; Legacy systems will NOT go to cloud! Data center facility ownership shi[ from facili=es to IT; Containeriza=on/Modulariza=on and standardiza=on in and across data centers; 6
Hybrid disaster recovery will gain acceptance by SMB more than any sector. The cloud makes it possible for small businesses to compete with large businesses since they can now afford to have similar funcjonality that they couldn t have previously. Worldwide public cloud spending is expected to grow from US$91 billion in 2011 to US$207 billion in Increased Demand for Resilient Infrastructure 2 used to support BCP/DR; as a service is most enterprises entry into the cloud usually for backup or secondary storage. Challenge is to decrease latency enough so Service Providers (CSP) can support enterprise- level primary storage ac=vi=es. Implementa=on Strategy Remains Unclear 3 Internal Implementa=on Hybrid External Implementa=on 39% 29% 18% 1h^p://phys.org/news/ demand- storage- devices- world.html - jcp 2 h^p:// lays- out- future- data- center- strategy- serious- focus- on- emerging- opportuni=es / 3 h^p://futureo[hedatacenter.com/ 7
Impeding Acceptance/Use Factors 3 Security Performance SLA Cost Governance/Legal/Regulatory Loss of Control Risk of Supplier Failing 33% 19% 14% 14% 11% 4% 4% 3 h^p://futureo[hedatacenter.com/ 8
3 h^p://futureo[hedatacenter.com/ x86 will sjll be available, much like mainframes are sjll available. However, since a lot of the new servers, like HP s Moonshot (which is architected with the Atom or ARM processors), are designed for specific applicajon environments and are just coming to market, it would not be expected to take much more than 25% of Intel s x86 market. Current applicajons are Web hosjng, Web surfing, search, and analyjcs/business intelligence. Customized Silicon; ARM Processor Development hyperscale compu=ng; Xeon Processor Development; Efficiency of x86 is reaching plateau; Shi[ to converged infrastructure / expert systems; Mainframe integrated with other plaoorms; designed to be central data server; 9
Geometric increase in storage demand 1 Worldwide capacity demands will increase significantly from 329 exabytes in 2011 to 4.1 ze^abytes in % CAGR global growth in HD market % CAGR global growth in SSD market % CAGR global growth in NAS Flash 2 ; reshaping demands on space, performance and loca=on of data; Solid State Drive Price Decrease; Improvements in NAS: 3.5 inch HDD capacity could increase to 30TB - 60TB by inch HDD 10TB 20TB by h^p://phys.org/news/ demand- storage- devices- world.html 2 h^p://futureo[hedatacenter.com/ consump=on decreasing while density increasing; 10
Geometric increase 1 : By 2017, over 1.4 ze^abytes of data will be flowing over global networks; By 2017, around 3.6bn people will be online; 3.5- fold increase from 2012's average speed of 11.3Mbps to 39Mbps; Photonics interconnect 2; Geometric increase in use but not in space, energy and size of IT infrastructure for most enterprises; Expect so[ware defined network to extend to transport layer in near future. SDN will cut costs, physical costs, significantly, but they are new and will take a few years to mature and prove its value. 1 h^p:// 2 h^p://futureo[hedatacenter.com/ 11
Reduced power costs drive renova=on or rebuild decisions; Reduc=on in server power requirements; PUE as a measure for energy efficiency; Numerous strategies to reduce heat: Sealing heat leakages Adjus=ng fan speeds Separa=ng hot and cold air Increase target temperatures Power- Propor=onal Compu=ng Chiller- Free Data Centers 12
DC Management It is expected that somewhere around 20-40% of processes will be supported externally the remainder will sjll be supported internally, as internal clouds or legacy environments. Provide incen=ves that support your primary goals; Focus on effec=ve resource u=liza=on; Use virtualiza=on; 2020 DC Management 1 Drive quality through a comprehensive compliance program; Embrace change management; Invest in understanding applica=on workload and behavior; Right- size your server and network plaoorms to meet your applica=on requirements; Evaluate and test servers for performance, power, and total cost of ownership; Standardize the infrastructure as much as you can; Take advantage of compe==ve bids from mul=ple manufacturers to foster innova=on and reduce costs 1 Samsung Memory Solu=ons - CIO Forum 2012 Microso[ Strategy 13
2020 DC The distance parameters for synchronous vs. asynchronous are significantly different. Currently, HP/IBM recommend a maximum of 60 miles (100 KM) to support synchronous using opjcal connecjons. Data processing should be shared between data centers. Whether these sites are under direct, shared or indirect management depends on: the enterprise s percep=on of 3rd party (including cloud) ability to provide the level of support required with acceptable risk; the third party s ability to provide and maintain service levels; end- to- end delivery capability to support business requirements. Each data center should share the processing workload and be able to back up the other, when necessary; DC Opera=ons 14
DC Opera=ons 2020 DC TradiJonally incremental daily with a full backup is acceptable. Best pracjce dictates that three copies be made, two to disk and one to tape. One of the disk backup is onsite to be used to provide instant recovery. The second disk backup provides disaster recovery support and the third tape- based backup is used to protect the business against catastrophic failure. Backup data center should be on different power grid; Each center should have mul=ple telecommunica=on, internet carriers; Customize implementa=on is based on business requirements, i.e., Global coverage affects data center placement, technology coverage hours, etc. Hybrid Disaster Recovery solu=on should be explored; saving measures should be taken in exis=ng data centers; Automated monitoring of facility environmentals, data processing components, network traffic, etc. Automated response to failed components switch to redundant components as needed; 15
s/ Op=mize Remove unnecessary components Limit plaoorm expandability Right- Size power supply Enhance Efficiency Use higher efficiency components Use lower power components Design for high temperature opera=on Op=mize power and cooling rack by rack Strategic Use of New Technologies Flash Memory: SSD or PCIe System on a chip efficient Cores (ARM or x86) Power Capping 2020 Recommenda@ons Op@mize s and 1 1 Samsung Memory Solu=ons - CIO Forum 2012 Microso[ Strategy 16
Disaster Recovery 2020 Disaster Recovery Hot or Nearly Hot Site for Cri=cal Processes; Warm/Cold Site/ Processes for non- cri=cal; Recovery Point Objec=ves (RPO)/Recover Time Objec=ves (RTO) defined by the business units; Support RPO by near real- =me replica=on across primary and backup site. Support RTO with Hot sites support RTO; Backups Depending on RPO perform incremental data backups intraday (some=mes near real- =me) and either transmit or ship offsite. Full backups weekly; DR Tes=ng Tes=ng of the DR plan is to be performed twice a year in such a way as to not disrupt business; High Availability Hot swappable disk drives and hot server spares; Hybrid include both on- site and cloud data processing environment; Risk Assessment Risk should be evaluated annually; 1 Samsung Memory Solu=ons - CIO Forum 2012 Microso[ Strategy 17
