Doctor of Philosophy and Anthropology Note: Simply pick the classes desired to complete the degree desired while keeping in mind the dissertation. *The additional credits apply to those lacking the foundational. The purpose Doctor of Theology or Philosophy Program is to provide the candidate with and advanced competencies and methodology insights through the preparation and case studies for those actively involved in professional and vocational of Intercultural Studies and Christian Assistance and Development. Cornerstone focuses on the practical knowledge and understanding rather the actual degree itself. For this purpose, CCU s requirements and standards are higher than most peer schools without any additional work or cost the student. There two types of doctorates to choose from: One of two directions can be taken to complete this program: 1. Dissertation Research: With the project phase, the degree is completed in approximately three to five years on a case by case basis. 2. Project Research. With the project phase, the degree is completed in approximately threefour years. How does the program work? 2 There some basic criteria that outline eligibility: 1. Academic: A candidate must have a Master degree in an appropriate biblical related discipline from an acceptable school with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. 1. (If insufficient background in biblical area disciplines exists, candidate may be required to take 30 credits of foundation courses.) 2. Experience: A candidate must have at least five years of appropriate experience. 3. English: No TOEFL score is required but the candidate must be able to handle higher level academic responsibility 4. Writing: submission and approval of a writing sample that demonstrates graduate-level research skills 5. Technology: The candidate must have acceptable computer and internet competencies 6. The candidates who don t have a prior discipline oriented degree or lack of biblical foundation will be required to take some additional biblical foundational courses to substantiate the lacking. If the lacking is minimal, we ll do our best to incorporate some require courses to fill any deficiency. From the start of your first course up to your graduation you ll know your interest, perception, and desire are biblically challenged and intellectually stimulated; and you ll be humbly proud of your Biblical, intellectual knowledge and of the caliber of such a highly respected two/three letters DR/PHD before or behind your name. Course description: Bear in mind that any of the following course may be changed, replaced, or substituted without prior notice to students when it is necessary. When such a change is made, students in this program will be notified. Doctoral Program (THD or PHD) Doctoral Program (PHD) 1. HEM 704 Hermeneutics (4 credits) This course is an Introduction to Biblical Hermeneutics has become a standard text for a generation of students, pastors, and serious lay readers. This second edition has been substantially updated and expanded, allowing the authors to fine-tune and enrich their discussions on fundamental interpretive topics. In addition, four new chapters have been included that address more recent controversial issues: The role of biblical theology in interpretation How to deal with contemporary questions not directly addressed in the Bible The New Testament s use of the Old Testament The role of history in interpretation The book retains the unique aspect of being written by two scholars who hold differing viewpoints on many issues, making for vibrant, thought-provoking
3 dialogue. What they do agree on, however, is the authority of Scripture, the relevance of personal Bible study to life, and why these things matter. A companion to this course.the Hermeneutical Spiral: A Comprehensive Introduction to Biblical Interpretation Recipient of a Christianity Today 1993 Critics Choice Award! In this newly revised and expanded edition, Grant Osborne provides seminary students and working pastors with the full set of tools they need to move from sound exegesis to the development of biblical and systematic theologies and to the preparation of sound, biblical sermons. Osborne contends that hermeneutics is a spiral from text to context--a movement between the horizon of the text and the horizon of the reader that spirals nearer and nearer toward the intended meaning of the text and its significance for today. Wellestablished as the standard evangelical work in the field since its first publication in 1991, The Hermeneutical Spiral has been updated to meet the needs of a new generation of students and pastors. General revisions have been made throughout, new chapters have been added on Old Testament law and the use of the Old Testament in the New, and the bibliography has been thoroughly updated. PHD724 Christian Apologetics (4 credits) 2. This course is a study of Christian Apologetics for the purpose of equipping the pastor, minister, or lay leader in the defense of the Truths of God. This study is in three parts: 1) deals with various tests for truth in order to lay a foundation for testing the truths of various world views, 2) applies the test for truth to those views, and 3) works within the theistic view to verify the deity of Jesus and the authority of the Bible. Part two: Reasonable Faith: Christian Truth and Apologetics "Evangelicals have been living on the periphery of responsible intellectual existence. The average Christian does not realize that there is an intellectual war going on in the universities and in the professional journals and scholarly societies. Christianity is being attacked from all sides as irrational or outmoded, and millions of students, our future generation of leaders have absorbed this viewpoint. This is a war which we cannot afford to lose RES 703 Research of Religion and Theology (3 credits) This course offers great opportunities to students today, especially in distant learning situations, to determine which resources can be used and which should be rejected. In addition to substantial, current information on electronic resources and online research, this course preserves all of the features presented in a more logical order. 4. LOG713 Introduction to Logical Thinking (3 credits) The perfect introductory course, this simplified study of logic prepares readers to reason thoughtfully and to spot illogic in an argument. 3. MIS723 Introducing World Missions (3 Credits) Course Description: Introducing World Missions, the first volume in the Encountering Mission series, provides readers with a broad overview of the biblical, theological, and historical
4 foundations for missions. It considers personal and practical issues involved in becoming a missionary, the process of getting to the mission field, and contemporary challenges a mission worker must face. This valuable guide is based on current research and includes numerous case studies that consider important issues, as well as sidebars, charts, and maps that provide further details on topics of interest. Altogether, this is an engaging introduction to the work of missions in the contemporary world. 4. ANT733 Cultural Anthropology (3 Credits) Course Description: The late Paul G. Hiebert ( ) was distinguished professor of mission and anthropology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and previously taught at Fuller Theological Seminary. He also served as a pastor and missionary to India. He received his PhD from the University of Minnesota and was the author or coauthor of numerous articles and books in the fields of anthropology 5. ANT743 Anthropological Reflections on Missiological Issues (3 Credits) This Course explores anthropology's contributions to the better cross-cultural understanding of epistemology, globalism, urbanization, church planting, spiritual warfare, and more. 6. PHL744 Philosophy: An Introduction for Christians (4 credits) "The unexamined life is not worth living," according to Socrates, but pursuing the examined life strikes many as daunting, unappealing and even unnecessary. Is philosophy important? Why do I need philosophy if I have the Bible? Aren't philosophers simply engaged in meaningless disputes that are irrelevant to everyday life? This course addresses these and other questions in this "prelude" to the subject. Unlike a full introduction to philosophy in a preliminary discussion that dispels misunderstandings and explains the rationale for engaging in philosophical reasoning. 7. ANT753 Postmodern Anthropology for Mission (3 Credits) This course presents globalization and urbanization as twin forces and powerfully shaping economics, politics, and religion in the world today. Traditional anthropological theories are inadequate to recognize and analyze trends such as global migration, diasporas, and transnationalism. New departures in anthropology and the social sciences seeking to address these and other phenomena can help us critique and reshape the theology and practice of Christian mission. 8. PHL754 Introduction to Philosophy: A Christian perspective (4 credits) Part two: Philosophy of Religion This is a classic introduction to the philosophy of religion from a Christian perspective. The discussions on science cover developments from cognitive psychology and naturalism as well as on the fine-tuning of the cosmos. The standard features serve a survey of the field, an examination of classical arguments for God's existence, and an exploration of contemporary challenges to theism from the social sciences and philosophy as well as the natural sciences. The meaning and significance of personal religious experience, revelation and miracles--all within the realm of contemporary religious pluralism--are likewise investigated.
5 9. LIT783 Epistemology 3 credits How do we know what we know? What have wisdom, prudence and studiousness to do with justifying our beliefs? Jay Wood begins this introduction to epistemology by taking an extended look at the idea of knowing within the context of the intellectual virtues. He then surveys current views of foundationalism, epistemic justification and reliabilism. This course examines the relationship of epistemology to religious belief, and the role of emotions and virtues in proper cognitive functioning Professors will find this text, with its many examples drawn from everyday student experience, especially useful in introducing students to the formal study of epistemology. 10. PSY783. The Developing Mind (3 credits) This course goes beyond the nature and nurture divisions that traditionally have constrained much of our thinking about development, exploring the role of interpersonal relationships in forging key connections in the brain. This course also presents a groundbreaking new way of thinking about the emergence of the human mind and the process by which each of us becomes a feeling, thinking, remembering individual. Illuminating how and why neurobiology matters, this course is essential reading for clinicians, educators, researchers, and students interested in human experience and development across the life span. 11. PSY 843 PSY of Religious Behavior (3 credits) Because society is increasingly secular, it may seem irrelevant to consider the psychology of religion. But the diversity of our multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society in fact makes religion more important to the social sciences than it has ever been before. What are the social consequences of religion? Every day the news is full of events that can be blamed on religion perpetrated by a range of groups from whole societies to individuals. Beit-Hallami and Argyle are renowned for their clear, analytical approach to topics and this new, state-of-the-art study of psychology and religion is no exception. It will be welcomed as an update to their previous work in the area by social psychologists, sociologists and theologians worldwide. 12. SCS854 Metaphysics: Constructing a World View (3 credits) What is ultimately real? What is God like? Do human beings have minds and souls or only brains in bodies? Are humans free agents or are all human acts determined by prior circumstances? Through insightful analysis and careful evaluation, William Hasker helps readers answer these questions and thereby construct a world view to make sense of the universe and the people in it. 6 This course is a classic introduction to philosophical ethics from a Christian perspective. Over the years the philosophical landscape has changed somewhat, and in this second edition Arthur Holmes adjusts the argument and information throughout, completely rewriting the original chapter on virtue ethics and adding a new chapter on the moral agent. Holmes addresses the questions: What is good? What is right? How can we know? In doing so he also surveys a variety of approaches to ethics, including cultural relativism, emotivism, ethical egoism and utilitarianism all with an acknowledgment of the new postmodern environment. PHD874 Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview (3 credits) The Philosophical Foundations for a Christian worldview offers a comprehensive introduction to philosophy from a Christian perspective. It seeks to introduce leaders to the principles subdiscipline of philosophy, including epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophy of science, ethics, and philosophy of religion. 15. CON883 Understanding and Counseling Persons with Alcohol, Drug, and Behavioral Addictions (3 credits) For more than a decade, Howard Clinebell's Understanding and Counseling the Alcoholic has been considered the standard work in the field. This updated edition of Clinebell's earlier book expands his work on counseling to encompass the care of persons with drug addiction, behavioral addictions, multiple addictions, and codependency. PHD900 Dissertation Research (18 credits) Description: This dissertation project must be a significant original work in nature, which will seek to making a contribution to the world of psychology and counseling. This final course culminates the entire course of studies and research required by this program. This is a very involved endeavor and will require an undivided attention. The research project comprises two part a quantitative and a qualitative research. Both parts must
7 demonstrate doctorate level quality of work in respect to magnitude of effort and the end product for such program. Student allowed choosing their own research topic and getting it approved by the Dissertation Review Board. Upon the approval of the research topic, a proposal containing the first three chapters, table of content and partial bibliography must be submitted to The Dissertation Review Board. A dissertation review fee must be submitted with the proposal. This fee will be assessed based on the academic year and the proposal will not be reviewed without this fee. The Review Board will review the research proposal. The board will either approve it, approve it with recommendations, or denied it. If the dissertation is denied, a separate fee will be required for revisions. Students are solely responsible to present the research project as required the first time to avoid any denial of proposal and extra fee. As part of the final review and grading of the final research project, the student has to defend his/her research findings before the committee. Upon the final approval, the doctoral candidate will submit two bound copies to the school. One will be graded, endorse, and return to the student and one copy will remain the property of the school.
