1 DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Purpose The Department of Education is primarily concerned that its graduates have a clear understanding of Scripture and are prepared to communicate truth, creatively and effectively, to individuals of all ages. The arts and sciences are integrated into the curriculum so that graduates, who have meditated upon God s Word, are able to respond to the needs of the world in culturally relevant and meaningful ways. This guiding purpose of the Department of Education is further clarified below as goals associated with three areas of student growth spiritual, intellectual, and professional are outlined. Spiritual: Essential to each program within the Department of Education is a focus on the combination of biblical instruction and practical application. A biblical worldview is strengthened as students are required to apply Scripture and scriptural truths across a wide range of academic subject areas. Spiritual growth is further developed and reinforced within the context of Christian devotion and unity through academic instruction and interaction with the Body of Christ, in and out of the classroom setting. Intellectual: Critical thinking skills (including knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation) are emphasized throughout the academic and practical experience components within each departmental program. A wide variety of teaching methodologies, paired with an understanding of the developmental stages of growth, are utilized within each program of the Department of Education. Students are required to process information obtained from coursework and personal research at a variety of cognitive levels, thus encouraging them to draw and expand upon a diversified knowledge base with regard to their particular area of study. Professional: Following Jesus as the perfect model of love and servanthood, the faculty and staff are responsible for providing learning environments where diversity is respected, ethical conduct is exhibited, and moral principles are upheld. Likewise, students are expected to display these professional qualities as they interact with the SEBC family, the community, and those in other educational and practicum settings. The professional development of faculty and students is encouraged as opportunities to attend academic conferences, to go on field trips, and to participate in small mentoring groups arise. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION PROGRAMS CHURCH EDUCATION PROGRAM The Church Education Program is a four-year program that gives the student a broad introduction into ministry in a local church or parachurch organization. It is designed to prepare some students to go directly from college into church or parachurch educational ministries; and for other students, it provides a solid undergraduate basis for graduate studies. The student receives a major in Bible and Theology with an area of concentration from one of the following minors: Counseling Ministries, Children s Ministries, Educational Ministries, or Youth Ministries. Each minor focuses on specific ministry needs and/or age groups.
2 Mission and Goals The mission of the Church Education Program of Southeastern Bible College, as it relates to the overall mission of the College, is to prepare students to enter fields of service in Christian schools and churches. Specifically, these fields include various children s ministries, counseling ministries, educational ministries, and youth ministries. The goals of the Church Education Program are as follow: 1. Graduates of the Church Education Program will develop a Christian philosophy of education and ministry; 2. Graduates of the Church Education Program will be aware of the various age level characteristics within their ministry context; and 3. Graduates of the Church Education Program will be able to determine their personal strengths and identify the influence of these strengths on future ministries based on spiritual gifts and personality inventories.. CHILDREN S MINISTRIES MINOR Students in the Church Education Program may choose the Children s Ministries Minor. This minor will prepare the student for ministry to children from birth to sixth grade. The Children s Ministries courses focus on the biblical principles, teaching methodology, and effective implementation of successful ministries to children in a local church or children s organization. Successful completion of this 128-hour program results in a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Bible and Theology, a minor in Children s Ministries, and the ACSI Bible Teaching Certificate for grades K-12. Students who are Counseling Ministries minors will learn about theories of personality, counseling techniques, assessment and diagnosis of psychological issues, stages of human development, scientific research methodologies, and counseling practices associated with specific populations (e.g., couples, families, children, individuals in crisis). The importance of the spiritual and emotional health of each student is emphasized in all counseling courses. To facilitate personal growth and insight, each student will participate in six (6) sessions of personal counseling with a professional counselor as a practicum requirement. A second practicum provides an opportunity for the student to get hands-on, observational experience in a professional counseling setting.
