1 EDUCATION The Education department affirms the mission, vision and training philosophy of AIU in its commitment to scholarship, research, teaching, faithfulness to the evangelical faith and tradition, and its desire to produce men and women who can transform the landscape of education in Africa and beyond within a Christian framework. In a rapidly expanding field students should be able, at the appropriate levels, to understand and critique the broader issues and policies that inform and affect educational research, planning and implementation in various contexts with the view of transforming those contexts according to the missional agenda of God. The departmnet affirms the vision, mission, commitment and objectives of the School of Professional Studies (SPS) in the endeavor to bring Christian influence to bear on the education profession. To achieve these, the department: 1. Prepares professionals and practitioners at various levels fof leadership roles in education by developing and implementing excellent, dynamic and relevant programs for diverse contexts 2. Strives to understandand inform educational practice by improving the conditions of learning and teaching across the lifespan and by engaging in holistic, rigourous research that addresses the needs and problems in the practice of education FACULTY Prof. V.B. Provides a scholarly community for students, faculty and staff for continuous professional development

2 Admission Requirements General Requirements for Masters degrees: Master of Arts and Master of Divinity. Needs a recognized Bachelors Degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or second Class upper division or GPA of or second class lower Division accompanied by minimum of two years working/ministry experience. Intakes: - September, January and May, for fulltime option. - August, December and April, for part- time/school based option. - Upcoming intake: April 2011, school based. Venue is at NEGST Karen campus Students desirous of admission to any of the programs in the department of education must meet the following requirements: 1. University-wide: Consult the general admissions requirements specified to the different levels of programs on offer in the department. 2. Department-specific: In addition to the Universitywide requirements, the department prescribes additional requirements specified for particular programs. These include relevant prior academic and work experience in the program of choice (e.g. a biblical and theological background prior to doing a program in church education, prior formal training and experience in the relevant aspects of education, etc.) Applicants may be required to satisfy prescribed deficiencies prior to or in the course of the program of choice. The Graduate Programs The department offers graduate specializations in four areas: Curriculum and Instruction; Leadership and Administration; Child Development and Family Studies; and Church Education On the basis of the programme philosophy, the graduate programme in education seeks to a. Help students to integrate faith and learning. b. Guide students into understanding the theological, philosophical and sociological foundations of education and to integrate such understanding in making transformative and Christ-centered educational decisions in diverse learning contexts c. Enable students to develop moral and ethical leadership styles within a Judeo-Christian framework. d. Encourage students to make a continuing commitment to ongoing professional development and research e. Develop in students a Christcentered worldview that nourishes the skills and attitudes required to pursue and use knowledge in relevant and transformative ways f. Mentor students according to 2 Timothy 2:2. g. Develop critical and reflective practitioners in the various specializations with the view of innovating practice and thought h. Help students to evidence growth in Christian character for faithful service to the church, society through their various specializations

3 Specializations Master of Arts in Education (Curriculum and Instruction) The specialization primarily provides for the on-going professional development needs of practicing teachers, and other educational professionals within the context of their disciplines-specific content knowledge. The program seeks to enhance the teaching competencies of such professionals by deepening their understanding of, and improving their skills in instructional design and teaching, curriculum design, and assessment within a framework. In addition, the programme provides a solid theoretical framework for candidates in non-teaching fields who may want to teach, administer educational programmes or want to be curriculum workers. Students who complete this programme should be able to 1. Demonstrate spiritual and personal growth throughout the programme 2. Demonstrate competence and/or increased specialization in curriculum design, development and evaluation 3. Demonstrate competence and/or increased specialization in teaching and assessment of learning 4. Integrate faith and learning into a personal philosophy of eduation that would inform their professional practices 5. Utilize appropriate research and educational theories on curriculum and instruction in making professional decisions 6. Demonstrate evidence of continuing commitment to professional development 7. Provide moral and ethical leadership in the classroom and in leading a curriculum team 8. Appreciate an inclusive classroom environment by celebrating the student diversity in the teaching process 9. 4 Master of Arts in Education (Leadership and Administration) The specialization builds up the competencies of individuals who desire to lead and administer education programmes in diverse institutional contexts. The programme is committed to providing quality education and instruction to leaders in the field of education that will fully equip them to face emerging leadership and administrative challenges. Students are empowered to use strategies that will make them become advocates of change and for training other educators in a mentoring relationship (2 Tim. 2:2). Students who complete the course of study should be able to 1. Demonstrate ability to develop, articulate, implement and nurture a shared vision 2. Demonstrate spiritual and personal growth throughout the programme 3. Demonstrate familiarity with the professional role and functions of the educational leader and administrator within the appropriate legal framework of the profession and within Christian ethical frameworks 4. Demonstrate competence in nurturing and sustaining the culture of a learning environment that creates a Christlike community for student learning and professional staff development 5. Demonstrate the ability to manage the organization, its operations and resources for a safe, effective and efficient learning environment 6. Integrate faith and learning into a personal philosophy of leadership that would inform their professional practices 7. Understand, respond to and influence the political, economic, social and cultural context of school and society 8. Utilize appropriate research and educational theories in leadership and adminstration of eduction 9. Demonstrate evidence of continuing commitment to professional development 10. Provide moral and ethical leadership in school settings and in leading a curriculum team 11. 5 Master of Arts in Education (Church Education) The specialization is designed for equipping potential and functional leaders with knowledge, skills and character qualities to enable those trained to go on to serve in church Education ministries, or teach in theological institutions, or teach in public schools. Students who complete the course should be able to: 1. demonstrate good working knowledge and understanding in the field of biblical and theological studies 2. demonstrate good working knowledge and understanding in the foundations of education 3. demonstrate skills in preparing and implementing a course of instruction for the different age groups children, youth and adults 4. demonstrate necessary capacity for further academic pursuit in the field of Christian education 5. Evidence an increasing Christlikeness as manifested in love for God and love for others and demonstrate, in community, evidence of the fruit of the Spirit. 6 Master of Arts in Education (Child Development and Family Studies) The Child Development and Family Studies program is designed to prepare students to develop competencies that would enable them to work as directors/pastors of Christian education programs in the church, children ministry workers, directors of children s home, caregivers, social workers etc. The program aims to prepare men and women to effectively and holistically minister to children in diverse contexts in local Churches and related institutions. Students are challeged to reflect upon child development within the African setting, and the influences that impact that development from a Christian worldview. The programme is designed to 1. Help students acquire knowledge of child development from birth to age 12 with an emphasis on the development of effective educational approaches and teaching processes that encourage moral, cognitive, and social development and growth in knowledge of and faith in God. 2. Help student develop a deeper understanding of the biblical and theological basis for children s spirituality. 3. Help students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate the holistic development of children. 4. Equip students with skills that will enable them to work with diverse children and their families in a complex society. 5. Provide students with the research skills necessary to observe and evaluate the needs of children. 6. Equip students to be able to train parents and other people in their local setting in ministry to children.
