1 Master of Divinity (MDiv) Course Description General Courses GI5000 Theological Research & Writing An introduction to theological research and writing papers at the graduate level. Students learn to use a theological library, basic Turabian format, and planning a writing project. For MDiv and MTS students.one credit.two Bible Courses BT5010 Bible & Interpretation An introduction to Bible study method and basic hermeneutical principles. Students learn to read scripture in the light of biblical theology, historical and literary context, and for preaching. Three Old Testament OT5010 Elementary Hebrew Essentials of Biblical Hebrew grammar with emphasis on morphology, phonology, syntax, and vocabulary.part of a sequence with OT5020 and OT6020.Three OT5020 Hebrew Exegesis I Focus on Hebrew grammar and its application in exegesis, with emphasis on building a reading vocabulary. Application of grammatical and exegetical methods to selected passages in the Hebrew text of the Old Testament. Prerequisite: OT5010. Three OT6020 Hebrew Exegesis II Development of exegetical methods from Hebrew grammar to the evaluation of higher critical methods. The course will equip the student to move from text to sermon and effectively to make the transition from exegesis to exposition. Prerequisite: OT5020. Three OT6030 Pentateuch & Historical Books Examination of the Pentateuch with special emphasis on the historical, hermeneutical, theological, and literary questions.analysis of the historical books with special emphasis on biblical narrative and the writing of biblical history. Prerequisite: OT6020. Three OT7040 Prophetic & Poetic Books Examination of the nature, purpose, form, and theological message of the poetical books.consideration of hermeneutical and theological issues, exegesis, and messages of the prophetic books.prerequisite: OT6020. Three New Testament NT5030 Greek Exegesis I An introduction to exegetical method, intermediate Greek grammar, exegetical terminology, lexical analysis and vocabulary with intensive study in the Greek text of Colossians.Greek vocabulary up to 16 NT occurrences. Prerequisite: Passing the Greek Proficiency Exam. Three NT5040 Greek Exegesis II
2 An intermediate introduction to exegetical method with focus on literary and higher criticisms, NT backgrounds, genre and theological analysis, textual criticism, issues in NT hermeneutics, and translation evaluation. Intensive study of the Greek text of Galatians.Greek vocabulary up to 10 NT occurrences. Prerequisite: NT5030. Three NT6050 Synoptic Gospels &Johannine Literature Prolegomena to the exegesis and interpretation of the Gospels, 1-3 John and Revelation, with intensive study of theological and critical issues, difficult passages, and relevance for ministry, faith and practice, building a framework of understanding and preaching the biblical message(s). Prerequisite: NT5030. Three NT6060 Acts, Pauline and General Epistles Prolegomena to the exegesis and interpretation of Acts, the Pauline Epistles, Hebrews, James, 1-2 Peter and Jude, with intensive study of theological and critical issues, difficult passages, and relevance for ministry, faith and practice, building a framework of understanding and preaching the biblical message(s). Prerequisite: NT5030. Three Systematic Theology ST5300 Christian Philosophy This course will cover the philosophical investigation of religious ideas and issues in Christian apologetics that are relevant to the student s contemporary culture. The aim of this course is to provide students an opportunity to develop a skill in critical (in a scholarly sense), constructive, and creative thinking from a Christian philosophy perspective. Three ST6530 Theology I (MDiv) This course studies the discipline of systematic theology and major doctrines of Christianity based upon the following units: Prolegomena, God, Trinity, Revelation, Scripture, Creation, Humanity, and Christology. Three ST6540 Theology II (MDiv) This course continues the studies begun in Theology I and is based upon the following units: Christology, the Holy Spirit, Sin, Salvation, Church, and Eschatology. Three ST7010 Christian Ethics This course discusses biblical teaching on standards of personal conduct and integrity and their relation to the sanctification process. Special attention is given to biblical perspectives on contemporary ethical issues. Two or three Church History CH5001 Church History I (세계교회사 I) The first church history course course provides a general overview of church history from the end of the New Testament period to the end of the medieval era. MDiv students are required to take the course in their first year. It is always offered in the first semester in the spring. It fulfills the first half of prerequisite history courses for theology. Three CH5002 Church History II (세계교회사 II) This second church history course is a study of church history from the Renaissance to contemporary times. MDiv students are required to take the course in their first year. It always offered in the second semester in the fall. It fulfills the second half of prerequisite history courses for theology. Three CH7100 Asian Church History (아시아교회사) This course surveys Christianity s presence in Asia from the early church to the present times. MDiv students have the option to take this course or Korean Church History (CH7110) to fulfill their Asian church history requirement for graduation. This course is offered once a year in the spring semester and must be taken by the MDiv student in the second or third year before graduation. Prerequisites: Church History I (CH5001) & II (CH5002). Three CH7110 Korean Church History (한국교회사)
3 This course is a study of the Korean church from the end of the eighteenth century to the present focusing mainly on Protestant presence in Korea. MDiv students have the option to take this course or Asian Church History (CH7100) to fulfill their Asian church history requirement for graduation. This course is offered once a year in the fall semester and must be taken by the MDiv student in the second or third year before graduation. Prerequisites: Church History I (CH5001) & II (CH5002). Three Practical Theology with Biblical Preaching (PT & BP) BP6100 Biblical Preaching This course will teach the student the basic steps in preparing an expository sermon. It willalso offer ways to prepare the student to plan his or her preaching through a preachingcalendar and create a filing system in becoming a better communicator.three BP6190 Preaching Lab I Second year preaching laboratory for the practice of biblical preaching with evaluation and development of exposition as a homiletic skill. Prerequisite: BP6100. One hour. PT5030 Introduction to Ministry and Worship An integrated study of Christian worship as it impacts daily ministry. This core course studies the theology of worship, the purpose of redemption, and the minister s responsibility to reflect worship in every area of ministerial service. Three PT5070 Christian Formation The Christian walk is revelatory and progressive. The Christian minister needs a foundation in spiritual formation and the ability to transmit the elements of formation to congregants and ministry partners. Christian Formation is an overview of the foundations and structures of spiritual health and growth for personal and pastoral application. One hour. PT5080/6080/7090 Christian Formation Internship, Personal Formation Internship, Ministry and Formation Internship A field study practicum where students apply Christian formation principles from the preceding semester in the concrete environment of church ministry. The class meets regularly to communicate experiences, offer insights, and share struggles with other students and the internship chaplain (the ordained course facilitator).zero PT6040 Pastoral Leadership and Discipleship A study of Christian pastoral pragmatics including: leadership and congregational personalities, finance, church business, crisis management, and congregational health. Specifically targeted is the area of Christian discipleship. Christ s discipling-leadership model is studied concurrently with successful contemporary Christian discipleship models. Three PT6070 Personal Christian Formation The course is a study of principles and practices of personal spirituality under pastoral pressures; the discipline necessary for a Christian minister to maintain spiritual balance in the demanding role of pastor. Emphasis is on application rather than theory. The course affords opportunity for self-examination, assessment, and development of a personal discipline, facilitating a spiritually rich pastoral life. One hour. PT7050 Church and Society Beyond evangelism, is the church impacting the community at large? What is the church s role and responsibility within the secular community? How are societal values and norms impacting the church? These are the overriding questions in a study of contemporary controversial issues between the church and society. Specifically, the course addresses characteristics of postmodern tolerance, relativism, and existentialism as they impact the church s views on subjects such as: homosexuality, human rights, holiness, capital punishment, censorship, cloning, bioethics, and more. Three PT7070 Ministry and Christian Formation The study is the last in a trilogy of formation development courses. After studying the concepts of spiritual formation and personally applying formation concepts toward a life-long personal discipline, Christian formation is examined as it impacts other facets of ministry; teaching, preaching, evangelism, administration, and social assistance. One hour.
4 Mission/Intercultural Studies MI 5000 Foundations of Mission & Evangelism An introductory course for mission and evangelism focusing on the biblical, historical, and strategic understanding of Christian mission and evangelism. The study includes contemporary theories and methods of mission and evangelism. Three MI 5042 Mission Field Research A course designed to develop research skills in mission context. This course provides basic field research skills including literary survey, field interview, ethnography, oral history, etc. One hour. MI 5420 Mission Practicum Theintegration of learning and experience through participating in short-term missions, attending mission conferences, visiting various mission organizations and specialized ministries.zero hour. MI 6200 Cultural Anthropology An introductory study of culture in relation to the communication of the Christian Gospel across cultures, with special attention to the relationship of Christianity and culture, worldview and worldview change, and social transformation.three MI 6500 World Religions Discussion of the major world religions and their encounter with Christianity in Asia, with special reference to the social, economic, and political implications of Asian religions.three MI 7401 Church Planting & Development An examination of the mission strategies required for planting churches, with special attention to socio-cultural considerations of the field. The aim of the course is to produce a concrete church planting plan. Three Christian Education / Education CE5111 Foundations of Christian Education The student will state an evangelical theology and philosophy of Christian education based on biblical and historical foundations informed by psychological, sociological, and cultural understandings of human development. Three CE6000 Educational Ministry of the Church The students will state an evangelical foundation of Christian education ministry, identify principles and practices for teaching and developing programs in the local church, and lead and implement the total discipleship ministry. Three CE6234 Discipleship & Mentoring This course will examine the basic principles of discipleship and mentoring and involve students in practice of those principles. Three CE6343 Leadership & Conflict Management The student will recognize the need for, understand how to, and actually implement the process of change; understand and use power positively; and work creatively with other professional staff and church members to manage conflict and to foster Christian values in the Christian context of ministry. CE6423 Teaching Methods & Practice The student will identify, describe, and model a variety of methods for teaching the Scripture based upon social interaction, information processing, the personal sources, and behavior modification. Three ED5010 Christian Philosophy of Education
5 This course is designed to survey the historical and philosophical views that guide current educational theory and practice. The course will focus on both secular and Christian philosophies of education and provide opportunities to discuss, and develop an integrated philosophy of Christian education. Three ED6040 Teaching-Learning Theory and Practice This course is designed to survey the contemporary models of teaching and learning theory, and lesson plan development for the classroom. The individual teaching and learning style of each student will be evaluated and implemented for practical use. Three ED6050 Curricular Foundations and Assessment This course is designed to review and evaluate contemporary theories of curriculum design, selection and evaluation. In addition, the various methods of assessment will be presented and discussed in regards to the philosophical, philosophical and teaching and learning theory. Instruction of both curriculum foundations and assessment theory will be integrated for practical application.three ED6513 Practical Field Education I This course is designed to provide field opportunities to students before they are engaged in the practice of student teaching. Students will visit local Christian schools and observe their daily operations. Also, students will interview teachers, principals, administrators and school staffs in order to gain a preliminary understanding of the various issues on Christian school education.two Hours. ED6524 Practical Field Education II This course is designed to provide an opportunity for student teaching at a designated elementary or secondary school. It is an opportunity for teacher candidate to work in a controlled environment with an experienced and qualified teacher. While working with a mentor teacher, the student teacher will teach elementary or secondary students. The student teacher will gain a rich and varied background in the art of teaching by being involved in this student teaching experience.one Hour. Christian Counseling CC5000 Christian Counseling Ministry The students will state principles and philosophies of integration between counseling and Christianity and overview the practical skills to help people in various ministry situations.
