1 PROGRAM Daimler AG 3 rd International Commercial Vehicle Technology Symposium Kaiserslautern 11 to 13 March 2014 University of Kaiserslautern
2 WELCOME Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, in the south west of the Federal State of Rhine land Palatinate and around the metropolitan region of Rhine-Neckar, you will find a settlement of about 25 % of the German Commercial Vehicle Industry. This sector comprises of manufacturers of trucks, tractors, construction vehicles and a broad spectrum of different special commercial vehicles and their suppliers. All these come together to comprise of a very meaningful economic sector, which distinguishes itself especially through exports. Since the last ten years, a certain technical think tank has developed at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern with more than 150 research engineers working on topics in the commercial vehicle field. With the Commercial Vehicle Alliance (CVA), we have chaptered an umbrella organization under which the Commercial Vehicle Cluster (CVC), the Fraunhofer Innovations Cluster for Digital Commercial Vehicle Technology (DNT) and the Center for Commercial Vehicle Technology (Zentrum für Nutzfahrzeugtechnologie ZNT) co-exist and co-thrive. Such a grouping facilitates the possibility of technical and scientific exchange and builds a platform for mutual innovation projects between the industry and the scientific fraternity. A network like the CVA works like a magnet. It pulls together organizations, researchers, management and funding and facilitates technical advancements through close co-operations of the participating entities. We could certainly recognize this magnetic effect in the last few years. The innovations in the commercial vehicle industry will be driven particularly by its users through the demand for savings potentials. With fuel consumption, which comprises of a large chunk of the cost factor, there has been clearly advancement in the last few years. Given the contribution, which the commercial vehicle sector must achieve in order to reach the climate goals, the endeavors must not be abated. As fuel consumption and CO2 go hand in hand, the climate and technical interests also go well together. I hence am very glad that the Commercial Vehicle Alliance will be successfully conducting the Commercial Vehicle Technology Symposium 2014 for the third time. The event has seen itself develop into a very meaningful platform for the organizations and research institutes as well as for students and young talented engineers. The event addresses important topics towards the future of the commercial vehicle industry over a period of three days. I would like to thank the organizing and the program committees for their engagement. I would also like to wish the participants of the event a meaningful and prolific time and hope that you find excellent insights and impulses for the commercial vehicle industry for the future. A fitting environment definitely contributes towards a successful event and the state of Rhineland Palatinate has been spot on with this. I hence am very sure that you would enjoy the hospitality of the city of Kaiserslautern and will experience a pleasant time during your stay. Malu Dreyer Prime Minister, Federal State of Rhineland Palatinate
