Perth College UHI is proud to be a partner in the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), Scotland s newest university, with 12 other Colleges and internationally renowned Research Centres. We offer courses from access and national certificate level up to honours and masters level. Location Perth is a beautiful and safe city with a fascinating history, numerous restaurants, bars and coffee shops, an award-winning concert hall and great nightlife. Perth sits at the gateway to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, containing breathtakingly stunning scenery. This amazing landscape is fantastic for thrilling outdoor activities such as skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, white-water rafting, as well as hill walking and enjoying the tranquillity of our mountains and lochs. Campus Life Our vibrant campus means that Perth College UHI is a popular choice for local, national and international students alike. With over 7000 full and part-time students, you are sure to meet new friends relaxing in our open green spaces or when visiting the Student Union. The Union has a Costa Café and the Student Association organises a range of social events and activities throughout the year, including live bands, comedy evenings, and supports a range of clubs and societies. Facilities We have state-of-the-art and industry-standard facilities to support your learning and equip you with the skills for your chosen career. You will have access to a world of learning resources. Our purpose-built library houses more than 30,000 books and offers thousands of journal and e-book titles in a range of formats. You can use our IT suite, borrow a laptop, print your work and connect to a wireless network using your own laptop. We have an International Centre and Language School to support our international students. Accommodation The Perth College UHI residences, built in 2010, provide modern and secure accommodation in shared or single rooms, with spacious kitchen/dining and lounge areas. All rooms have private en-suite facilities, a study area and free access to the internet and College network. Alternative accommodation in Perth is also available within private flats or with our host families.

9 09 Business and Accounting We offer a wide range of levels and subject areas within business, administration and accounting from national certificate to degree and professional qualifications. Many of our courses include practical aspects, including work experience, which helps improve our students employability skills. Some of our programmes also include the opportunity to study abroad. NC Administration People with good skills in administration are always in demand and this course provides an excellent introduction to a career in administration. As well as developing your administrative skills this programme will also teach you about other subjects that are important in the workplace, such as working with others, problem solving and time management. NC Business The business world is constantly changing and employers want their staff to have the range of key skills our NC in Business offers. This nationally recognised qualification provides an excellent introduction to business for school leavers and mature students, giving you the confidence and skills you need to find work in a business environment or to study at Higher National level. HNC Business (with Enterprise) Our business with enterprise course has been designed to help you develop the knowledge and skills necessary for planning a business venture. You will also have the opportunity to take part in a range of events throughout the year hosted by Perth College UHI s Centre for Enterprise. You may also go on to do further studies in enterprise at degree level. HNC Business (with Marketing) In today s dynamic business environment, effective sales and marketing strategies are vital to boost both profitability and reputation. Our business with marketing course has been designed to give you this expertise. The course content has been put together following consultation with employers to ensure that you gain relevant competencies for entry-level marketing positions. There is also an opportunity for further studies in marketing at degree level. HNC/D Accounting Every business and organisation has to manage its finances efficiently to make the best use of their resources, so people with the right training are always in demand. Our HNC and HND accounting programmes will provide you with a nationally recognised qualification and the skills you need to work on taxation, budgeting and financial accounting. They will also give you the ideal start to a career in accountancy or financial management as they provide exemption from professional qualifications. HNC/D Administration and Information Technology This advanced programme can help your career by providing you with high-level practical and problemsolving skills and improve your job prospects. Completion of this course provides credit towards a number of professional qualifications including Institute of Qualified Private Secretaries, Institute of Administrative Management and Association of Secretaries. HND Business In the rapidly changing world of business, highly skilled employees are key to providing organisations with a competitive edge. Our business courses have been designed to give you this expertise. HND Business further improves your career prospects as a supervisor or first-line manager. Completion of this course will provide you with excellent all-round business expertise, strategies to deal effectively with change and decision-making tools. BA/BA (Hons) Business and Management The BA (Hons) Business and Management provides a high-quality, broad-based business and management qualification introducing you to all aspects of today s modern business, including marketing, human resources, business law, information technology and the domestic and global environments in which they operate. It is possible to progress to the third year of the degree with other relevant HNDs provided appropriate units are studied. The course uses different modes of delivery including online and video conferencing, and you will join other students from across the Highlands and Islands. Specialist themes are: finance; human resource management; marketing; enterprise and administration and organisational management. BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance (subject to approval) This degree has been designed to allow students to progress from HND Accounting towards a career in the Accounting and Financial Sector. This is a broad based degree covering relevant aspects in Accounting and Finance. The course uses different modes of delivery including online and video conferencing and you will join other students from across the Highlands and Islands. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARDS There are a range of professional development awards offered in this area. These awards have been designed to allow you to evidence the skills necessary for employability in a range of occupations within this geographical area. They are offered by a variety of methods and you should contact us to find out the range of methods available for each PDA. The PDAs cover the following areas. General Insurance, Conveyancing, Financial Accounting, Book-keeping, Management Accounting, IT in Business, Office Administration, Office Management and IT. At Perth College UHI we can provide you with the underpinning knowledge and understanding required to succeed in this ever-changing field. Networks grow and develop. The software and hardware required to keep them going are constantly being upgraded, so to succeed in today s job market it s essential that you are IT literate. You can study from National Certificate (NC) to Higher National Certificate or Diploma (HNC or HND) through to the Bachelor of Science (BSc). Whether you wish to start learning or develop existing IT skills, or you re just looking for qualifications to help with a career change, our computing courses can help you get there. NC Digital Media Computing Every organisation uses software and hardware to solve problems and perform tasks more efficiently, so if you want to improve your career prospects, a good level of computing skills is essential. This introductory course is suitable for all types of people regardless of qualifications, age or work experience and will allow you to gain practical skills and a formal qualification in digital media computing. You will learn multimedia creation, basic games design, software development/programming and hardware installation and maintenance. You will also have the opportunity to gain a National Progression Award (NPA) in Web Design Fundamentals, a NPA in Computer Networks and Systems as well as completing the NQ in Computer Technologies. HNC/D Computing National research suggests that the need for systems and support staff will grow, with database and web skills also being in strong demand. This HNC/D programme will prepare you for a career in the IT industry, where there is still a substantial skills shortage in the UK. It also provides an excellent way to enhance your existing qualifications. HNC Computing Applications Development or HND Mobile Applications Computing Science These courses offer an excellent opportunity to gain relevant employment in the computing industry or to further study. We offer two themed HNC programmes which will allow you to experience specific areas in computing. Students will follow the same programme throughout the year but will specialise in semester 2. The areas of specialism will allow the student to investigate mobile technologies (Android applications) or gain skills in developing applications using VBA (Visual Basic Applications). These optional units are subject to sufficient student enrolments. BSc/BSc (Hons) Computing This course will prepare you for a career in computing, particularly in the areas of database theory, web and mobile design, computer forensics, web science and artificial intelligence. It has been designed to produce skilled graduates with the knowledge and experience needed to find work in more responsible technical and professional posts. Learning will be through a variety of different modes of delivery including online and face-to-face teaching. In both years you will study a variety of subjects which are geared towards the ever-changing IT and computing job market. Your final project could involve you working with real clients developing a wide variety of systems including intranet applications, e-commerce websites and occasionally network designs. MSc Computing Science and Web Technologies This course has been designed for international students and is aimed at employees hoping to gain a recognised qualification through CPD. Our MSc programme aims to provide you with the comprehensive knowledge and understanding, sector leading specialist skills and expertise that will mean that you are well prepared for a career in the computing industry. You will gain an understanding of the key functional areas of computing, computing science and web technologies and have an opportunity to apply your learning through an intensive practically-oriented programme involving individual and team projects, tutorials, practical sessions and assessments. The MSc in Computing Science and Web Technologies will greatly enhance your employment prospects. Recent study has shown that only 4.22% of IT graduates are employment ready, with only 10% of graduates considered employable by multinational companies. MSc in Web Technologies (subject to approval) This MSc programme in Web Technologies is designed in response to specific domestic market demand and to meet the needs for flexible learning and CPD opportunities within the changing Computing industry. The course is intended to strengthen the student s ability to promote independent learning whilst developing original and creative responses to problems and current complex issues within the context of emerging and web technologies. The programme will have a core theme focussed upon growing trends in the computing industry where the emphasis on utilising the web and web based technologies becomes more common in recent times with the requirement for mobility throughout many sectors in industry, business, commerce and social life. The qualification will provide for the introduction of tools and web based applications, focussed upon core users as people on the move, demanding continual availability to services and the increase in the availability of wireless and mobile internet along with the emergence of cloud computing. 13 Hospitality and Tourism 13 The hospitality and tourism industry is one of the largest employers in Scotland, and research shows that demand for qualified staff will only continue to grow. Our courses have been designed with this in mind so you can develop the relevant skills that you will need to get your career off to the right start. With highly commended and unique programmes, we offer invaluable tools to prepare you for working in this industry, including working within our Food Court, where you can work in partnership with Sodexo to prepare and serve food to fellow students and staff. SVQ Level 1 Hospitality Bronze Award If you have the right skills, then the food and hospitality industries can provide you with excellent rewards. To be part of this growth area you will need the right training, and that s where our experienced and professional teaching and assessing staff can help. This course provides you with a general introduction to food and hospitality so you can decide if this fastpaced but rewarding work is right for you. We work closely with The Gleneagles Hotel on the content of the course to make sure it gives you the skills that employers need. SVQ Level 2 Professional Hospitality Silver Award The hospitality industry is a fantastic industry to be employed, having the skills to work within hotels, restaurants, service management, pubs, clubs, and residential care homes at home or abroad. The industry requires trained staff with excellent customer service skills and knowledge to work in the restaurant, kitchen and events. Our hospitality programmes gives you the appropriate training within the Food Court and our award-winning training restaurant and kitchens to develop your skills and knowledge to aim for the career you are dreaming of. You will also enjoy working in partnership with local employers including Sodexo and The Gleneagles Hotel. SVQ Level 2 Professional Chef Silver Award The Professional Chef Award is a unique culinary arts experience that attracts many types of people who want to pursue a career within one of the fastest growing industries in the country. You will develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed for a busy kitchen environment through a mix of College study, including skills training enhanced with an integral in-house work placement within the Food Court, visits to food suppliers, producers and the finest kitchens in the area. SVQ Level 3 Professional Chef Gold Award (subject to approval) This one-year programme is for those who wish to train and practice developing kitchen skills within the College s Food Court, a real working environment and our award-winning fine dining restaurant, which sets high standards of customer service and delivers excellent food to members of the public. You will gain practical hands-on learning experience on how to plan, cook and present various styles of menus from between 20 and up to 400 covers. Within the Chef s Academy at Perth College UHI, you will develop your initiative and coaching and leadership skills to be work ready on successful completion of your course. The content covers a wide range of competency based practical units with embedded underpinning knowledge. You will also enjoy working in partnership with local suppliers and employers including Sodexo. The course is very practical so, if you are hard-working and want to learn more, then this course will provide the qualification you need. HNC Professional Cookery This programme has been specifically designed for chefs who wish to develop their skills and knowledge in professional cookery and kitchen management. You will experience advanced, modern cookery techniques and look at food product development. The training environment is learner-centred and focuses on current industry standards. HNC Hospitality Hospitality is a growth industry both nationally and internationally, covering hotels, restaurants, pubs, leisure and travel. It needs good, trained staff and this course introduces you to the supervisory skills required for a successful and fulfilling career. Our hospitality programmes aim to give you an exciting and interesting practical experience in venues including our production kitchen and award-winning training restaurant. HND Hospitality Management This two-year programme will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to join this highly competitive and expanding industry, which is the largest and fastest growing profession. Chartered Management Institute First Line Management (SCQF level 6) Our qualifications in First Line Management are developed for supervisors and first-line managers who have operational responsibility for a defined area of activity. They give junior managers the communication and motivational skills to help improve operational efficiency. The level 6 qualifications in First Line Management are designed for supervisors and first line managers who wish to build on and develop their existing management skills and knowledge. Chartered Management Institute Management and Leadership (SCQF level 8) The qualifications in Management and Leadership are designed for middle managers and those aspiring to senior management who want to develop key skills such as managing resources, recruitment and information management. The level 8 qualifications in Management and Leadership are designed for practising middle managers who wish to develop their core management skills and practices. These qualifications focus on the personal development of the individual learner s management capabilities and competencies. Chartered Management Institute Strategic Management and Leadership (SCQF level 11) Developed for senior managers who have responsibility to translate organisational strategy into effective performance, the level 11 qualifications in Strategic Management and Leadership require the manager to focus on implementing the organisation s strategy. The level 11 qualifications in Strategic Management and Leadership are designed for directors and senior managers who have the authority and personal inspiration to translate organisational strategy into effective performance.these qualifications require directors and senior managers to build on their skills in strategic management and leadership and to focus on the requirements of their inter-organisational strategy. Masters in Business Administration Our MBA programme aims to provide you with the comprehensive knowledge, skills and understanding to enable you to become a future senior manager. Upon completion of this course you will also be eligible to apply to enter the Register of Exercise Professional (REP s) at Level 2 therefore better preparing you for employment in the industry. HNC Coaching and Developing Sport (Level 7) The HNC Coaching and Developing Sports award is designed to support applicants who wish to pursue (as a possible career path) working within the Sports Coaching and Sports Development Industries. At the same time, many of the competences achieved in this course will allow you to make other career decisions and follow different pathways within the sport or other industries. HND Coaching and Developing Sport (Level 8) The HND Coaching and Developing Sports award is designed to build on the knowledge and experience gained from completing the HNC award and it will allow you to advance your knowledge and competence in the field of coaching and sports development. The award will provide a qualification recognised by employers and the public, and will allow access to employment. BA in Sports Management (Level 9) Year 3 The exciting new BA Sports Management degree is designed for those seeking a broad-based management qualification that will introduce you to all aspects of today s modern sporting business. This course will equip you with some of the skills you will need for a career in sports management, including marketing, human resources, business law and IT. You may study through a combination of face-to-face and video conference lectures in the classroom as well as individual online study through the UHI virtual learning environment (VLE) supported by our lecturers. BA in Activity Tourism Management (Level 9) subject to approval If you love adventure and outdoor pursuits, then we have the perfect career path for you. Study the BA in Activity Tourism Management degree with us and you will learn all the skills and knowledge you need to work in the dynamic and increasingly expanding global adventure tourism industry. The local adventure industry was the original driving force behind this course, whose ambitions to have a knowledge and research facility in the area, as well as offering their experience to the development of potential employees, saw this idea become a reality. 19 19 Aircraft Engineering The aerospace industry requires high-calibre engineers at every stage of the product lifecycle, from conceptual design through to in-service support. With a predicted growth in the sector, Perth College UHI can help you meet the need for engineers of the future. Perth College UHI Aircraft Engineering courses offer a range of academic qualifications, all the way from National Certificate to Honours degree, and up to Masters. Our staff possess specialist knowledge across the breadth of aeronautical disciplines, coming from industry, academia and the armed forces. Perth College UHI s BEng and BEng (Hons) have been accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society. NC Engineering Systems An excellent foundation for a career in the aviation industry. You will develop the skills and knowledge required in the field of aeronautical engineering, as well as other engineering skills relevant to modern technicians or engineers within a wide range of technology-related industries. HNC Aircraft Engineering This course represents the 1st year of the BEng programme in Aircraft Engineering while also providing successful students with an industry recognised qualification. It provides a syllabus that is closely aligned to associated aspects of the EASA Part 66 knowledge and skills requirement for the certifying aircraft mechanic. As well as a broad foundation in engineering science, mathematics and aeronautical engineering subjects, you will also learn practical skills in an aircraft hangar workshop environment. Dip HE Aircraft Engineering This 2nd year of the BEng programme provides a recognised qualification at Engineering Technician (Eng Tech.) level. The Dip HE provides further specialist aeronautical engineering topics, again embracing additional aspects of the EASA Part 66 syllabus and providing more practical aircraft maintenance skills development, including inspection and testing. You study broader aspects of the requirements for aircraft engineers, such as mechanical, electrical and avionics systems, business and management. You will continue to build engineering and mathematics knowledge in an aeronautical context. BEng Aircraft Engineering This course represents the 3rd year of the BEng undergraduate programme and provides successful students with a recognised qualification at Incorporated Engineer (IEng) level at the end of this stage. It can lead to options in air transport operations or design. Building on the learning experience of the Dip HE in Aircraft Engineering, Year 3 further develops knowledge and skills across a mandatory core of aeronautical disciplines such as aerodynamics, avionics, propulsion, structures, business and management using a systems approach which will stand a student in good stead irrespective of which branch of aviation their career takes them. In semester 2 of this year, electives are available to allow students to give their engineering development a bias toward careers in the aircraft operations industry or the aircraft design industry. Throughout this year, students continue to develop their personal and career portfolio and hone their job-seeking skills. BEng (Hons) Aircraft Engineering This course represents the 4th year of the BEng undergraduate programme and provides successful students with a recognised Honours qualification. It offers options in air transport or design. Building on the learning experience of the BEng in Aircraft Engineering, Year 4 develops knowledge and skills to a more complex level across a mandatory core of aeronautical disciplines such as avionics, airframe systems, aircraft propulsion and project management. As in Year 3, these mandatory core modules provide the capstone of transferable knowledge and skills for application in any engineering sector of the aviation industry. In semester 2 of this year, further electives are available to allow students to build on their specialisations developed in Year 3. Throughout this year, students continue to develop their personal and career portfolio.
