From that moment, my involvement with SAYLA has had such a big impact in my practice and life. I am surrounded by attorneys that are friends and mentors because of that work. This year, I am honored to serve as the President of the San Antonio Young Lawyers Association. I hope that we can continue to do more for our members and our community. From all of us, we thank our outgoing President, Patty Rouse Vargas, for her leadership and effectiveness last year and commend the outgoing Board for its hard work. This year, we have reorganized our committee structure under the three things that we do well: Community Service, Social/Networking, and Professional Development. We have an outstanding Board of Directors and Executive team. I am thankful for the energy and ideas of all of those in leadership. If you have an idea about an event or something that SAYLA should be doing (or doing more of), reach out to anyone on the Board. We'd love to hear from you. - J. Barrett Shipp Thank you to Coach Newman and the University of the Incarnate Word tennis team for hosting the first SAYLA tennis clinic. Members had the opportunity to participate in a two hour clinic going through all aspects of the game. Team members from all over the world took the time to teach us serves, volleys, forehands, and backhands. We had a great turn out and Coach Newman looks forward to planning the next clinic with SAYLA! The seminar and workshop was organized to give future leaders an opportunity to learn and discuss from some of San Antonio s finest leaders. Nick Guinn, a director on both the SAYLA and TYLA Boards, garnered SAYLA support for a seminar after hearing about successful programs through local affiliates in Dallas, Austin, and Houston at the SBOT's Bar Leaders conference in Houston last year. Barrett Shipp and I were in Houston at the Bar Leaders conference and, asked ourselves, [W]hy can t we do that? With a generous grant from the Texas Young Lawyers Association, we were able to host a successful event. The presence of state and local bar leadership was felt by the number of great SABA and SBOT directors and officers that spoke. 3 Docket Call 3 Summer 2015 SABA/SAYLA CHILI COOK OFF AND FAMILY FUNDAY 2015 Thank you to everyone who made the 2015 San Antonio Bar Association and San Antonio Young Lawyers Association Chili Cook Off and Family Fun Day a huge success! Over fifteen chili teams showed up ready to show off their skills. Congratulations to Davis & Santos Chili My Willie chili and head chef Jeff Benavides wowed the judges and took home 1st place. Higdon,Hardy and Zuflacht s cook off team, who took home the coveted People s Choice Award this year! The kids has a blast on the obstacle course and bounce house activities. 4 Docket Call 4 Summer SAYLA SCRAMBLE Despite the rain on Friday, May 15th, the SAYLA Scramble went on to be a tremendous success. As the SAYLA committee members dreaded the worst, a postponement of the event, at noon the clouds opened up and the sun came out. Over 95 golfers showed up to show off their skills and play at the Quarry Golf club. After a long day on the green, Paesanos Lincoln Heights hosted a happy hour for SAYLA members and golfers. Thank you to all of the sponsors, and thank you to the SAYLA board members, Carolyn Newman Small, Bonnie Kirkland, and Brendan Holm, who organized the tournament.
