Thursday Morning, January 29, 2015 Time Activity/Title Presenter CEU 7:15-8:00 -Check-In- All Participants 8:00-8:30 Opening Remarks David Wright, MSW, LICSW 8:30-10:00 Session I: Co-Occurring Disorders and the Criminal Justice System: Working with Public Defenders, It s Not as Painful as You Think Jeff Johnson J.D., Angela Kroening Johnson, LSW 10:00-10:15 -Break- 10:15-11:45 Session II The Treatment Triad, Steve Lansing, PhD, MSW, LICSW, Ann Lansing, RN, BSN, MPH, CARN 11:45-1:00 -Lunch- Provided-Sandwich, Soup Buffet
4 8:30-10:00 Co-Occurring Disorders and the Criminal Justice System: Working with Public Defenders, It s Not as Painful as You Think Jeff Johnson JD, Angela Kroening Johnson, LSW The presenters bring together over 30 years of working with clients within the criminal justice system. In this presentation, they will share their unique prospectives, he as a Chief Public Defender of the 3 rd Judicial District and she as a Dispositional Advisor for the Minnesota Board of Public Defense. Together they will examine; information regarding the intersection of law and treatment of individuals with co-occurring disorders, review information regarding treatment and recidivism and, present for discussion and understanding, the challenges and considerations of individuals with co-occurring disorders whom are involved in the criminal justice system. 10:15-11:45 The Treatment Triad: The Interaction and Reaction Between Physical, Chemical and Mental Health- Understanding and Direction Steve Lansing, PhD, MSW, LICSW, Ann Lansing, RN, BSN, MPH, CARN Have you ever worked with someone who gives vague answers, seems evasive, gives no response to questions and frequently provides the I don t know answer? Do you wonder if that person is being resistant, defiant or just plain criminal in their thinking? We can look at criminal histories and see patterns that suggest criminal thinking but often there is some use of alcohol or drugs in the mix. What part of behavior is thinking, what part of behavior is substance use and/or withdrawal? A chemical health assessment will provide clues to that answer but how often do we look at medical problems? Those who work with the criminal Justice population recognize the often poor state of self-care and nutrition and are familiar with recognizing some of the symptoms of mental illness. Thursday Afternoon, January 29, 2015 Time Activity/Title Presenter CEU 1:00-2:30 Session III Comparing Patient-Identified Healing and Satisfaction Factors in Residential Treatment David Smith, PhD., LICSW 2:30-2:45 -Break- 2:45-4:15 Session IV Voice Therapy for Addiction and Mental Health Treatment Saul Selby, MA, LADC 4:15-4:30 Day 1 Wrap-Up David Wright, MSW, LICSW 4:30-5:30 -Break/Check-In- 5:30-7:30 Evening Meal Area Establishments (On Your Own) 7:30-9:00 Entertainment and Social Time (Presentation of Americana Music) In Main Conference Center
5 1:00-2:30 Comparing Patient-Identified Healing and Satisfaction Factors in Residential Treatment David Smith, PhD., LICSW Participants will review a recently-published study of male and female residential cooccurring patients that ranked perceived healing and satisfaction factors at the end of their treatment experience. A comparison of these factors reveals insights and opportunities for clinicians to examine/enhance their existing co-occurring treatment services. 2:45-4:15 Voice Therapy for Addiction and Mental Health Treatment Saul Selby, MA, LADC Voice therapy is a form of cognitive restructuring that enables clients to move more readily, gain insight into, and effectively manage self-defeating thinking. By helping clients externalize these thoughts as part of themselves, but distinct from themselves, voice therapy helps clients identify and effectively manage self-defeating thoughts that can contribute to addiction, relapse, depression and anxiety. 7:30-9:00 Presentation of Americana Music (In Main Conference Center) Friday Morning, January 30, 2015 Time Activity/Title Presenter CEU 7:15-8:00 -Breakfast- 8:00-9:30 Session V: The Visiting Native Catherine Larsen, MS, LAMFT 9:30-9:45 -Break- 9:45-11:15 Session VI: Is Chronic Pain in Your Future? What is on the Horizon for CD/MH Professionals? Sarah Mangan, MSW, LICSW, Carl White, LSW and Ronald Amdahl, MS, LP 11:15-11:30 Closing Remarks David Wright, MSW, LICSW 11:30 Door Prize Steve Lansing, PhD, MSW, LICSW Drawing/Adjournment 8:00-9:30 The Visiting Native Catherine Larsen, MS, LAMFT For the Native American, receiving services for co-occurring disorders is frequently a tenuous, ineffective visit to a program instead of a meaningful event on their journey through recovery. Disparity in professional acknowledgement of worldview and lifetime lessons can prevent appropriate diagnosis and treatment planning and this will be the focus of this session. 9:45-11:15 Is Chronic Pain in Your Future? What is on the Horizon for CD/MH Professionals? Sarah Mangan, MSW, LICSW, Carl White, LSW and Ronald Amdahl, MS, LP
6 What is on the horizon for chemical and mental health professionals? Current research indicates that maladaptive use of alcohol or mood-altering chemicals, specifically opiate drugs, taken over a long period of time, actually increases a client s perception of pain. How do we as practitioners address this growing and critical part of substance use disorder treatment? During this presentation, you will have an opportunity to consider how pain impacts your current and future clients. The concept we discuss here is Tri-Morbidity ; the confluence of physical, chemical and mental health. (Alternative) Neurostimulant Abuse and ADHD: Co-Occurrence and Treatment Strategies David Wright, MSW, LICSW Perhaps no greater controversy exists in the treatment of co-occurring substance abuse and mental health conditions as that of how to treat clients with co-occurring neurostimulant abuse and ADHD. This presentation will help to demonstrate the effective strategies, dispel preconceived myths and promote positive action for the treatment of both, thereby increasing the client s recovery outcome and overall quality of life Co-Occurring Disorders Symposium Conference Attendee Registration Complete below for each participant.
