1 Ventura Charter School of Arts & Global Education Board Policy for Acceptable Use and Internet Safety Student Policy--SP004 Ventura Charter School of Arts and Global Education ("School") recognizes the value of computer and other electronic resources to improve student learning and enhance the administration and operation of the School. To this end, the Board encourages the responsible use of computers; computer networks, including the Internet; and other electronic resources in support of the mission and goals of the School. The School has a strong commitment to providing a quality educational curriculum for its students, including access to and experience with technology. The School s goals for technology in education include promoting educational excellence by facilitating resource sharing, innovation, and communication, providing appropriate access to all students, supporting critical and creative thinking, fully integrating technology into the daily curriculum, and preparing students to meet the challenge of a highly technological and information-rich classroom and workplace. The Board adopts this policy governing the voluntary use of electronic resources and the Internet in order to provide guidance to individuals and groups obtaining access to these resources on Schoolowned or personal equipment or through School affiliated organizations. The School employs technology protection measures that block or filter Internet access during the use of its computers with Internet access. In compliance with California legislation, E-Rate, and the Children s Internet Protection Act, VCS addresses the appropriate and ethical use of information technology in the classroom so that students and teachers can distinguish lawful from unlawful uses of copyrighted works, including the following topics: the concept and purpose of both copyright and fair use; distinguishing lawful from unlawful downloading and peer-to-peer file sharing; avoiding plagiarism; providing for the education of students about Internet safety, including appropriate online behavior, interacting with other individuals on social networking sites and in chat rooms; cyberbullying awareness and response; protecting online privacy and avoiding online predators. Acceptable Use All use of the Internet must be in support of educational and research objectives consistent with the mission and objectives of the School. Students must 1. Respect and protect the privacy of others. o Use only assigned accounts. o Not view, use, or copy passwords, data, or networks to which they are not authorized. o Not distribute private information about others or themselves. 2. Respect and protect the integrity, availability, and security of all electronic resources. o Observe all network security practices, as posted. Page 1 of 5

2 o Report security risks or violations to a teacher or network administrator. o Not destroy or damage data, networks, or other resources that do not belong to them, without clear permission of the owner. o Conserve, protect, and share these resources with other students and Internet users. 3. Respect and protect the intellectual property of others. o Not infringe copyrights (no making illegal copies of music, games, or movies!). o Not plagiarize. 4. Respect and practice the principles of community. o Communicate only in ways that are kind and respectful. o Report threatening or discomforting materials to a teacher or administrator. o Not intentionally access, transmit, copy, or create materials or messages that are profane, pornographic, threatening, rude, derogatory, discriminatory, or meant to harass. o Not intentionally access, transmit, copy, or create material that is illegal (such as obscenity, stolen materials, or illegal copies of copyrighted works). o Not send spam, chain letters, or other mass unsolicited mailings. o Not buy, sell, advertise, or otherwise conduct business, unless approved as a school project. Use of the electronic media at School is a privilege that offers a wealth of information and resources for research. In order to maintain the privilege, students agree to learn and comply with all of the provisions of this policy. Bullying by means of an electronic act toward a student or school personnel will result in immediate disciplinary action regardless of whether the activity takes place at School or off-campus. Creation and transmission, originated on or off the schoolsite of a communication by means of an electronic device. Electronic transmissions include but are not limited to, a message, posting, text, sound, or image of an electronic device, including, but not limited to, a telephone, a wireless communication device, computer, or pager. Definition of Bullying includes but is not limited to: Any severe and pervasive physical or verbal act or conduct Includes communications made in writing or by means of an electric act (not just 8-3) but at home as well. Includes: sexual harassment, hate violence, harassment, threats, or intimidation. Has or can be reasonably predicted to have the effect of one or more of the following: fear of harm to his/her person or property. Substantially detrimental effect on his/her physical or mental health Substantial interference with his/her academic performance Substantial interference with his/her ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by the school. Establishing network or Internet connections to live communications, including voice and/or video (relay chat), is prohibited unless specifically authorized by the teacher or administrator. Page 2 of 5

3 Students will not play games unless specifically authorized by a teacher for instructional purposes. The use of portable music/video players and cell phones at school is prohibited unless specifically authorized by School personnel. Students waive any right to privacy or confidentiality to material that was accessed, created, sent or stored using VCS technology or a VCS-provided network account. There are no facilities provided by this system for sending or receiving private or confidential electronic communications. System administrators have access to all mail and will monitor messages. Messages relating to or in support of illegal activities will be reported to the appropriate authorities. The School reserves the right to change its policies and rules at any time; updates to policy will be made available on the School website. Amended: /18/15 Page 3 of 5
