General Guidelines for Technology Use You may not develop programs to harass other people, hack, bring in viruses, or change files that aren t yours. You are responsible for any of your files on the computer or network they should be school appropriate. You must care for your assigned laptop at school and at home.

Monitored Use KSD will review and monitor all use of technology for responsible use. How you use the technology can be traced. Viewing websites, sending s, deleting files, and more All files stored on the laptop or on your H drive are the property of the district and can be monitored.

Monitored Use KSD may remove your technology access without notice at any time if you are doing anything that is not appropriate. KSD will cooperate with law enforcement investigations relating to any inappropriate activities.

Security You should not share login or passwords. Exception: parents or guardians You should follow Internet safety guidelines.

Discussion

Questions Explain the statement All use of technology must support education. Brainstorm a list of examples of using technology that do not support education. Why do you think KSD reviews and monitors how people use technology? What are the potential risks for sharing your password with others?

Student Acceptable Use The following rules are in effect during all school hours for all computers unless otherwise directed by the teacher. Laptop use in study halls/detention is to work on school assignments only.

Unless directed by a teacher, students are prohibited from: sending s, instant-messaging, using headphones in class, downloading programs, music, games, and videos, accessing chat rooms, playing games, sharing files, or connecting to Ethernet jacks.

Students are also prohibited from: putting stickers on the laptops or cases, defacing the laptops or cases in any way, (marking, painting, drawing or marring any surface of the laptops or outside of cases) illegal use or transfer of copyrighted materials, or adding, modifying or deleting files except in the student s own folders.

Obscene language and/or materials, including files, screensavers, images, and/or videos are prohibited. If it doesn t fit your school dress code, it doesn t belong on your computer!

Use of Thumb Drives Although allowed, the use of thumb drives is not recommended. If you would like to backup your files, the best way is to use your H drive. The KSD Acceptable Use Guidelines and the One to One Appropriate Use Guidelines apply to the thumb drive once it is plugged into any district laptop or computer. The use of thumb drives should be monitored by a staff member.

Questions Student laptops are purchased through money from our technology levy. This means that our local voters have agreed to pay for the laptops through taxes. With this in mind, why do you think Kent School District has so many rules about how to care for and use the laptops appropriately?

Using your Laptop at Home The general guideline is that all use of the laptop and system must support education. Any questions regarding appropriate use should be brought to a staff member. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to monitor student activity on the computer while at home.

Using your Laptop at Home YES, you can, with parent permission: Use instant messaging Watch DVDs Listen to CDs Participate in online gaming, if game is school appropriate Reminders: School work is the top priority! Assignments should be completed before you use the laptop for anything else. Never do anything that requires a download at home, including Active X.

KSD takes seriously its responsibility to prepare all students with 21st century tools and skills. Successfully prepare all students for their future
