4 4 9 Coastal Engineering Dredging Capital improvement and maintenance dredging, as well as land reclamation and beach nourishment projects, are essential to maintaining the delicate balance between the preservation of the natural environment and the necessary development of industry and society as a whole. Successful development of these projects requires a multidisciplinary approach that includes project conceptualization, alternatives analysis, sediment characterization and suitability analysis, permitting, construction management, and monitoring. AECOM employs individuals with the experience to bridge the gap between design and implementation, allowing for increased efficiency in program implementation. Our team includes experts in dredging engineering, geotechnical engineering, sediment chemistry, toxicology, fish and benthic biology, sediment transport, contaminant fate and transport, and human and ecological risk assessment. AECOM also provides baseline environmental data collection, ecological risk assessment, and modeling to support the selection, evaluation and permitting of potential dredged material disposal sites. US Federal and state agencies have accepted AECOM s sound scientific procedures and clear and concise presentations of data analysis as bases for approving permits and permit amendments, under NEPA, MPRSA, and CWA Sections 401 and 404 and the Magnuson-Stevens Act. Our field data collection and analysis/assessment capabilities also meet regulatory requirements for long-term monitoring of dredged material disposal sites. 5 8 5 Coastal Modeling Ecosystem Restoration AECOM provides a comprehensive array of modeling services, developing, calibrating and using a wide range of numerical models, from proprietary models, to public domain models, to University models currently under development. AECOM regularly applies multiple assessment approaches, from simple Zero-D analytical and empirical assessments to more complex 1D, 2D and 3D finite-difference and finiteelement models. Our modeling projects cover a wide range of systems (i.e., canals, rivers, estuaries, embayments, and open coastlines) and habitats (i.e., wetlands, salt marsh, mudflats, mangroves, beaches, estuaries, and open coasts). Our modeling studies have also addressed a diverse array of projects including (but not limited to) ecosystem restoration, water quality, constituent transport, breakwater design, shoreline enhancement and Left: Tidal and Freshwater Wetlands, Homebush Bay, Sydney Olympic Site, Australia Top Center: Bolivar Marsh Bird Island and Levees, Gulf Coast of Texas Bottom Center: Bahia Grande Marsh Restoration, Texas Top Right: San Francisco Bay Salt Pond Restoration, Bottom Right: University of Texas Wetland Habitat Creation, Gulf Coast of Texas Freshwater, brackish and salt marsh Submerged aquatic vegetation Intertidal mud and sand flat Barrier islands and barrier headlands River diversions Shellfish reefs Coral reefs Dredge-and-fill marsh creation and enhancement Stream and floodplain Riparian corridors and fencing Exotic vegetation management and removal Culvert and dam modification and removal AECOM has extensive experience in ecosystem restoration, protection and enhancement projects in a variety of habitats across the US and throughout the world. AECOM understands the ecological and public benefits of restoring degraded ecosystems, the regulatory driving forces that require restoration, and the advantages of applying restoration as a mitigation measure to achieve a net positive environmental effect. Our foremost goal in designing any type of restoration or enhancement project is to plan and design a system that is sustainable. By focusing on function, the restored system is allowed to be self-regulating and integrated into the surrounding landscape. This requires crossdiscipline coordination, utilizing the diverse skills of our engineers, ecologists, wetlands scientists, wildlife biologists, botanists, and hydrologists. management, flood damage reduction and protection, and fish passage. Our experience in coastal modeling studies enables us to select the most appropriate model based on the key questions being addressed, the relevant process under consideration, and the complexity of the system at hand. With the recent expansion of efficient Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solutions to multifaceted hydraulic problems, our coastal engineers and modeling specialists have integrated our CFD, physical modeling, and field data collection expertise in order to provide cost-effective, reliable, and practical solutions to support a diverse array of projects and clients. Our ability to combine these resources into a multiassessment approach results in a high degree of confidence in the final results. 6 6 7 Coastal Structures Climate Change AECOM has extensive carrying out climate responsive projects. Climate change is already affecting both the built and natural environment. Sea levels have rising over the last century, causing erosion and flooding impacting infrastructure, water supplies, and natural resources. Many areas have also seen increased average temperatures, more extreme hot days and shifts in the water cycle. As a result, building resiliency into the planning, design and development process needs to be a fundamental part of any organization s risk management strategy. AECOM s approach incorporates a multi-disciplinary analytical approach to assess local conditions, which constitutes the foundation of the climate vulnerability analyses and feeds into the development of adaptation plans and strategies.
