3 Melbourne Scholarships The Melbourne Scholarships Program is one of the most generous and comprehensive in Australia. Not only do we offer scholarships for outstanding academic achievement, we also provide access to students who might not otherwise have the chance to study here.? You asked for it! One of my students would like to apply for the Bachelor of Science but doesn't meet the Mathematics prerequisite. What can he/she do? There are a number of equity scholarships available through the University s scholarship program including: MELBOURNE ACCESS SCHOLARSHIP Benefits: A total allowance of $ for the normal three-year duration of an undergraduate degree (excluding honours). 4 Pathways to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine There are a number of ways students can progress into the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) at the University of Melbourne one option is through the Bachelor of Science. Students wishing to progress into the DVM from the Bachelor of Science must complete the Animal Health and Disease major (Veterinary Bioscience specialisation) in third year. Students completing the specialisation progress into the DVM at second year level following the satisfactory completion of all subjects in the Veterinary Bioscience specialisation. When do students in their second year apply to get in to this specialisation? Bachelor of Science second year students will be able to apply for the Veterinary Bioscience specialisation in October. These students will have completed the second year level subject Foundations of Animal Health 1 and will be enrolled in Foundations of Animal Health 2 in semester 2. They will also have either completed or be currently enrolled in, a second year level Biochemistry subject. How do they apply? Directly through the University s online application process. To be considered for the Veterinary Bioscience specialisation, a Bachelor of Science student would apply for the DVM course during their second year for the start year intake of the DVM following completion of the Bachelor of Science. For example: a second year Bachelor of Science student in 2013 would apply in October 2013 for admission into the DVM for the start year intake What is the selection criteria? Academic merit. Performance in science subjects completed in the Bachelor of Science. In addition to academic merit, consideration is also given to Graduate Access Melbourne applications and an applicant s personal statement. Can students complete the Animal Health and Disease major without this subject? Yes. There are two separate specialisations within the Animal Health and Disease major. The Veterinary Bioscience specialisation is only available to students who have been pre-selected by the Faculty of Veterinary Science into the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Students not selected into the Veterinary Bioscience can complete the Animal Health and Disease major by undertaking the other specialisation Animal Disease Biotechnology. Majors in other disciplines can also be completed. Completion of the Animal Health and Disease major is not a prerequisite for graduate entry into the DVM (i.e. the four year program), other science majors are acceptable. What happens if a student is unsuccessful in applying for the Veterinary Bioscience specialisation? Bachelor of Science students who are unsuccessful in applying for the Veterinary Bioscience specialisation can still be selected into the DVM as part of graduate entry (i.e. the four year program). MORE INFO For more information about the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine visit: vet.unimelb.edu.au Dougal Davis: Mathemagician There are two enduring stereotypes of mathematicians and statisticians. Firstly, that they are unable to communicate their ideas to laypeople. Secondly, the image of the mathematician beavering away on their own in a darkened room. Now, meet Dougal Dougal Davis Dougal Davis has always dreamed of a career in research and teaching, and with his studies at the University of Melbourne he is one step closer. After completing his Bachelor of Science he is now coming to the end of his first year in the Master of Science (Mathematics and Statistics). A vital part of the Master of Science is the research component, which prepares students for the rigours of a Doctor of Philosophy. Dougal is attempting to understand the answer to a technical problem in the intersection theory of moduli spaces. These mysterious-sounding areas are spaces whose points correspond to certain types of geometric objects. Once Dougal has completed his Master of Science, he intends to commence his Doctor of Philosophy (Science). He feels that the research component of the Master of Science has put him in good stead to attack his PhD with gusto. The research project in particular has given me a lot of practice reading research papers, and quickly getting the gist of what they re about. It has also taught him vital skills in independent research, knowing where and how to look amongst reams of data and information. Dougal is also full of praise for the collaborative attitude of the student community in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics: There are many student-run reading groups and seminar groups aimed at understanding some particular advanced topics. Hardly the image of the lone scholar that we have held in our heads for years! And what are Dougal's future plans beyond his PhD? My dream job is actually to be a university lecturer. On top of my passion for mathematics and research, I also love teaching and explaining things to people. graduate.science.unimelb.edu.au/ master-of-science-mathematicsstatistics coursesearch.unimelb.edu.au 4

5 Engineering and IT graduates launch exciting careers on the world stage Engineering and IT graduates from the University of Melbourne are finding themselves with a wealth of varied and well-paid career opportunities, from developing software for Microsoft in the USA to working at leading engineering consultancies in Australia and around the world. There has never been a better time to undertake engineering and IT studies. Graduate Engineers and IT professionals are in high demand, with the demand for graduates exceeding supply in many areas. Graduates are assured of a variety of exciting graduate opportunities, commanding strong salaries. The Australian Computer Society has forecast the net demand for ICT workers in Australia will increase by in 2013 and in Meanwhile, Engineers Australia continues to report evidence of an underlying shortage of engineers in Australia, mirroring a broader global trend. Mechatronics graduate Pupul Bhaumik works as a Manufacturing Engineer for Boeing Aerostructures Australia (BAA), which she describes as the highlight of her career to date. She is involved in assembly and fabrication projects for the new 787 aircraft. Reuben Bond Software Engineering graduate Reuben Bond works in Washington DC as a software engineer for world leading software and services corporation, Microsoft. Reuben said there were many opportunities for graduates in the US tech industry with many tech companies recruiting from Australia. The best part of my job is giving input into one of the world's largest cloud services. I dive deep into the inner workings of our product to find and solve issues before they hit production, and have the opportunity to work with people from all over the organisation to collaboratively integrate our products and services. Pupul Bhaumik The best part of my job is the chance to be involved in a wide variety of tasks, which require both hands-on activity and working closely with structural analysts to solve any problems we encounter during production. Working closely with shopfloor operators ensures that my knowledge and understanding of the company s processes and technologies is continually growing. Graduate students undertaking Engineering and IT courses at the University of Melbourne have access to specialised careers and industry services, offering a range of support including consultations, seminars and events and advice about internships and placements. For further information, visit: eng.unimelb.edu.au/study/careers University of Melbourne in top 100 CEO list The University of Melbourne has been named as one of the world s top 100 universities measured by the number of its graduates who head a major global company. According to the Times Higher Education Alma Mater Index, Melbourne ranks at 91 and is the only Australian university in the top 100 of this list. Two Melbourne alumni, Rio Tinto chief executive Sam Walsh and Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman, are in the exclusive club of CEO s who head a Fortune Global 500 company. The Alma Mater Index is based on the Fortune Global 500 and ranks universities by the following criteria: number of degrees awarded to CEOs; number of CEOs as graduates; total revenue of companies run by a university's CEO graduates. It counts bachelor's and master's degrees, MBAs and PhDs. Source: Australian Financial Review, 6 Sept coursesearch.unimelb.edu.au 5
