2 YEAR 12 INFORMATION The Age VCE and Careers Expo After attending The Age VCE and Careers expo year 12 students are encouraged to gather all of the information they gained and formulate a list of pathways they are interested in taking and investigate how to peruse these in the future. YEAR 11 INFORMATION My Career Match Profile On Friday 9 th May all year 11 students completed a My Career Match profile which is an online career assessment matching students strengths and personality with careers that best suit. The students participated in a presentation, delivered by the careers team, and then completed a short online profile which asked them a few questions about themselves. Based on the answers the students immediately received a career report and workbook which will inform them of what their personality style is, what their natural strengths and talents are, how they can choose a career that is right for them, a list of jobs that match who they are and what they will be good at, their ideal work environment, what qualities they will bring to a job and tips on writing a resume. This profile is also sent to the careers coordinator to be accessed when assisting the students in career development in their individual career counselling appointments. If you would like further information on the my career match profile please feel free to contact the careers team. CAREEER APPOINTMENTS All year 11 students have the opportunity to receive an individual career appointment. This is a brief 15 minute meeting in which the careers advisor will go through the students MyCareerMatch profile, subject selections and how the careers team will be of assistance to them throughout this year. If you would like an appointment please contact the careers team. Careers News May Issue 2014 Page 2

6 International Student Admission Test (ISAT) Various Centres ISAT is a three-hour test comprised of multiple-choice questions and used by Australian universities to assist their selection of international students for some undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The ISAT measures general academic abilities considered important for coping with the intellectual demands of most tertiary courses; it also assesses critical reasoning and quantitative reasoning. ISAT is required for a number of Australian degrees such as Medicine at Monash University, and for the Universities of Tasmania, Western Sydney, Western Australia, Queensland and of NSW, for Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney, and for Dentistry at the Universities of Queensland and Western Australia. ISAT is delivered by Prometric, and there are over 5000 Authorised Prometric Testing Centres around the world, with tests available between April and February. 7 What is Speech Pathology Speech pathologists (or therapists) diagnose and treat people with communication disorders (eg speech, voice) and people with problems swallowing or eating. For example, they may work with people who have a cleft palate, delayed speech, stuttering or brain damage, and work with other health professionals. A number of universities in Victoria offer degrees in speech pathology. Australian Catholic University (ACU), La Trobe University and Charles Sturt University at Albury-Wodonga (a NSW university) all offer 4-year degrees. Speech pathology can also be studied at the University of Melbourne where students first complete a 3-year undergraduate degree followed by a 2- year Masters in Speech Pathology. The Clearly-in ATAR last year for ACU was 85.20, La Trobe (Bundoora) (Bendigo) 83.10, and Charles Sturt Note: last year s ATAR is only a guide students are sometimes offered a place with a lower ATAR because they did well in certain subjects (receiving a Subject Bonus), or because they had a Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) application due to disadvantage in their education. ATARs move up and down according to the number of applicants for a course, the applicant s ATARs, and the number of places available. PARENT TIPS As a parent, you play an important role in helping your child to make educational choices and career decisions. You can play a great role in guiding their career development and fostering their optimism, enthusiasm, energy and curiosity. A lot of this relies on good communication. Does this sound Familiar? I want to help my child plan for their future? My child doesn t know what they want to do when they leave school? My child wants to be a forensic scientist. Where can you find information I help? Where can I find information on courses and training providers in our local area? Where can we speak to someone working in the industry my child s interested in? I don t understand my child s career path. Visit myfuture-assist your Child section. This section helps you support and encourage your child with their career making decision. You will find a range of resources such as occupational videos, labour market information and the new myfuture forum, a tool allowing you to talk to people working in a range of industry. 9 Tips on Interview Skills Preparing for your interview Preparing for your interview is the key to success. Make sure you can explain everything in your resume and cover letter, including examples and explanations of your experience. Be clear about why you want the job and why you want to work for that organisation. Do as much research about the company or business as you can. During the interview You may be interviewed by one or two people, or by a panel. Ask the person who notifies you of your interview time who will be interviewing you. This way you can be prepared. Remember the following Prepare and write down questions so you can refer to them during the interview. Dress appropriately for the interview. Turn off your mobile phone. Get to the interview on time. Be confident and speak clearly. Show you are keen by listening and paying attention. Ask specific questions. Leave the interview on a positive note by thanking them again for their time. if you're not sure about a question the interviewer is asking, ask them to explain or clarify that question. Sometimes it's helpful to note down the various parts of a complex question. Be sure to keep your answers relevant to the job and why you are the best person for it. The interview is not a time for: true confessions discussing politics, religion, race or marital status talking about family problems expressing anger over past jobs complaining about looking for work or the number of interviews that you have had. Always have some questions of your own to ask. Some questions could be about: opportunities for further training and professional development the organisational structure Careers News May Issue 2014 Page 9
