GCC s New Print Management System the college is implementing a new system for managing student printing Have you seen those pay stations (pictured right) in the Library and the Open Lab? Are you wondering what they are? They re part of the college s new print management system being implemented to help GCC go green and control printing costs. Starting in the Spring, students will be given the equivalent of 200 free black and white prints each semester to use in the Open Lab or Library. This amount will show up in the print balance window (pictured left) as $ Once a student reaches the limit, a student will be charged 5 cents per black and white page to print. The pay stations act as account refill stations where a student can add cash or coins to their account in order to pay for additional prints. County residents using the library to print will also be charged 5 cents per black and white page and can create an account to print when they log in using the Library s temporary password for county residents. A Print Management Brochure that explains the process is available in the Library and Open Lab. On each computer s desktop, a student or county resident will see a dollar amount window with the exact balance available for printing. This balance will adjust when a user adds or subtracts funds from their print account. Users will have the ability to cancel a job if they have made a mistake and do not wish to print or to confirm their print job if they want to send it to the printer. + Director s Blog SCHEDULED NETWORK OUTAGE: JANUARY 20 & 21, 2013 In the world of modern education, information technology is truly a partner which enables access from within as well as from outside our campus. These days, Gloucester County College offers classes almost 365 days a year using elearning. This is amazing, but it also poses an interesting dilemma: How do we upgrade the core technology that allows elearning and Banner to function when the very act of the upgrade will temporarily disable access to these core services? The only answer is a planned downtime. To that effect, our core information technology infrastructure will be ugpraded on January 20 & 21, This means that elearning, the GCC Portal, and Banner will be unavailable during this timeframe. On behalf of the Office of Technology, I wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season and a technologically sound New Year!. 2 (continued from page 1) Printing with the new print management system is easy. First, a user logs into a networked computer in the Library or Open Lab as they normally would. Next, the user chooses PRINT from the program being used and chooses any print options needed before confirming the print job. The user will have to confirm the print job in the Print Notification window (pictured left). The print job notification window will show the user the amount of pages to be printed, as well as the total cost to the user. Finally the user will have a choice of selecting PRINT to continue, or CANCEL if they do not wish to print the job. If the user confirms the job, the document can then be retrieved from the printer and their balance will be reflected accordingly. Using the kiosk itself to add value to a user s account is a painless process. The first thing a user will do is log in to the pay station itself. Students will enter their network user ID and password while county residents will enter the account information they created at the workstation for a print account. When the bill acceptor (pictured right) light turns green, the user can then add the desired amount in dollars or coins that the user wishes to add to their balance. Once the currency has been added, the user s balance will be updated to reflect the change before the user clicks to confirm the updated balance. Once this has been completed the user will be able to print from the updated print balance. As for the type of currency accepted at the pay station kiosks, the coin acceptor will take nickels, dimes, quarters, and Sacagawea and silver dollars, while the cash acceptor will take ones, twos, fives, tens, twenties, fifties, and hundreds. Unused paid print balances will carry from one semester to the next while unused free prints will not carry over. Paid print balances for students must be used before a student graduates as any remaining paid balance will not be refunded upon graduation. If you have any questions about this new system, you can contact us at or via at openlab@gccnj.edu.. elearning Website Did you know that there is an elearning website? You can get to it by visiting the GCC website ( and clicking the button located directly below the login box. You can also access the site directly by visiting The website gives some basic information on what elearning is, and it also has a lot of helpful information for both students and faculty alike. Faculty, if you want to make sure your students know where to go to have their questions answered, either by reading the FAQs or by reaching out to our elearning Support team, this is the place to send them. And if, as a faculty member, you need to submit a request for support, you can do so from this site as well. What else does the site offer? There is a brief Is elearning Right For You? quiz that will help students decide if they are prepared for taking an online course. You can also find a complete list of online course offerings as well as get information on all of the scheduled maintenance windows so everyone can plan accordingly. There is an entire section of the site that is geared towards students (called the Student Help Center) which contains login instructions, an orientation video, a list of technical requirements, and there are video tutorials to watch (which detail how to use elearning tools) and Frequently Asked Questions to read through. There is also a sectionm dedicated to instructors (called, you guessed it, the Faculty Help Center) which has a lot of the same pages, but all structured so that they are helpful for faculty. One specific item of note for faculty is the Known Issues page. This page gives faculty members information on how to access the elearning 2.0 Faculty Lounge, which is where all important information regarding elearning 2.0 is posted. To find out more about the Faculty Lounge, make sure you check out the HOT TOPIC area to the right of this column. The Faculty Lounge offers more than just a list of known issues, so don t miss out! HOT TOPIC. elearning 2.0 Faculty Lounge all the important information, all in one place WHAT S THE LOUNGE ALL ABOUT? As we re sure you will agree, having a centralized location to disperse information, and to collect it as well, is hugely important. We want to make sure faculty members know that our elearning Support team is there for them, and that their fellow faculty members always have relevant information to share as well. To access the elearning 2.0 Faculty Lounge, just log into the GCC Portal and then into elearning 2.0. As soon as you log in, you will see a list of courses you re enrolled in, and one of them is called the elearning 2.0 Faculty Lounge. If your courses are sorted by term, you can find the Faculty Lounge in the term called Training. Once you re in the Lounge, you can begin taking a look around. The course menu has a list of features which include announcements, the all-important discussion forums, and an area where you can learn more about the elearning 2.0 system. Everything is in a constant state of development, so it s important for you to check back often to stay on top of things. The Discussion Forums are the highlight of the Faculty Lounge. Here you can talk with other faculty members to get hints or tips about different approaches that have worked (or not worked) for them, or share your own experiences. There is a forum dedicated to Administrative Posts which is where important information will be posted by the elearning Support team when there is something that needs to be shared. There is also an area called Beth s Blog where Beth Beecroft, one of your elearning technicians, writes about some of the things she feels might help others, including tips on giving exams and the quirks of the text editor. If you have any questions about the elearning 2.0 Faculty Lounge, or if for some reason you find you are unable to access it, please let us know. You can reach us, as always, by ing elearning@gccnj.edu or by phone at PAGE 2

3 . University Center a semester almost in the books already! The University Center has been up and running since the start of the Fall semester, and we re excited to give you some information on the technology in the brand new classrooms. Each of the 18 classrooms (including the two lecture halls) in the University Center is equipped with a computer, Blu-ray player, ceiling-mounted LCD projector, and SMART Interactive Pen Display, along with a teacher s station (on a height-adjustable desk) to control everything with the push of a button. If you want to hook your laptop up to the system, you can do that too. The cable you need is already installed, so just call for assistance if you need it. While there were a few speed bumps at the beginning of the semester, due to outside contractors who installed the technology, our IT technicians were able to resolve the issues as they came up. At this time there is only one persistent issue: DVDs and Blu-ray discs are not currently able to be played through the Blu-ray player, though DVDs do work when played through the computer. This issue has been disagnosed as a digital handshake problem and it will be resolved as soon as possible, though at this point we are at the mercy of the companies. If you need any assistance with technology in the University Center, or any other classroom on campus, please let us know. You can reach us by ing media@gccnj.edu or by calling Our technicians are always more than happy to help.. An Update on elearning 1.0 (WebCT) students no longer have access ; faculty still have access Students can no longer access elearning 1.0 (WebCT). In cases where there is a specific need for a student to have access to elearning 1.0, the situation must be presented to elearning Support so the appropriate actions can be taken. Faculty members still have access to elearning 1.0 (WebCT). To access the system, log into the GCC Portal and click on the Faculty tab. In the elearning 1.0 channel, you will find a link to login to the old system. Faculty will continue to have access to elearning 1.0 until Fall of CollegeAnywhere and elearning 2.0 thanks to a new CollegeAnywhere building block, videos can be inserted directly into your course! CollegeAnywhere allows faculty to provide educational videos to their students on almost any subject. Faculty can embed full-length videos from the PBS and Annenberg Libraries, or they can bookmark specific segments of videos and set it up so their students to get to watch just those clips. While CollegeAnywhere has been available to faculty at Gloucester County College since September of 2009, what has made it even more desirable is its easy, streamlined integration with the new elearning 2.0 system. In the past, faculty would have to visit the CollegeAnywhere website and login with their credentials to view the videos, then they d have to grab links that they d paste into WebCT. On the students side, they d have to login with provided credentials in order to view the content, and it wouldn t play within the course, but in an entirely separate window, making it easy for students to lose track of where they were in the course. With the new CollegeAnywhere building block, faculty who already have a CollegeAnywhere account can sync it with their elearning account and have easy access to the libraries of videos without ever leaving elearning. For faculty who don t already have a CollegeAnywhere account, a few clicks will create one and sync it up automatically. No headaches for anyone! Once you ve perused the libraries (which are organized by producer, subject, or title - screenshot on right) and found a video you d like to include, you can choose to embed the video just about anywhere in the course, including Discussion Posts. This means students no longer have to login with their own credentials; the video will appear and load right there in the course! You can see how seemless the final look is in the screenshot below. It only takes a few minutes to set up, but it can provice hours of online content for both you and your students. Let us know if you re interested in using CollegeAnywhere by sending us an (elearning@gccnj.edu) and we can arrange a time for you to stop by. PAGE 3
