3 Message from the Academic Dean, Faculty of Business I am delighted to introduce you to our Master of Science in Human Resource Management and Organisational Behavior Programme at Lingnan University s Department of Management. We conduct internationally recognized research in such areas as leadership, supply chain, ethics, and conflict management. Lingnan was rated second among all eight public universities in Business and Economics in the latest Research Assessment Exercise conducted by the Hong Kong University Grants Council. As part of Lingnan s liberal arts mission, faculty members are also committed to helping students become independent, open-minded, and public-spirited citizens. People and how they work together are the most important and enduring competitive advantage because through them organizations innovate, form alliances, and adapt to the changing marketplace. Management Department professors are dedicated to developing and applying knowledge so that individuals flourish and teams perform in our organizations. Our MSc prepares students to be human resource professionals and leaders. They will learn how to be effective members of human resource management departments who contribute their specialized knowledge about developing a motivated, capable workforce. They will also learn to become leaders who inspire others to work together as a team. They will learn about how to help themselves and their colleagues strengthen their professional and interpersonal skills. As indicated in the course offerings, students have opportunities to learn such vital issues as leadership, organizational change, and conflict management. The emphasis in our courses is on student participation, discussion, and rational discourse. Students are asked to understand important concepts, think critically of their implications, and apply their knowledge in work settings. Students debate various positions, conduct research, and present their findings. In these ways, students master ideas and develop self-confidence and open-mindedness. Then they are prepared to enter the job market in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and elsewhere as human resource management professionals and managers. They may also choose to pursue research careers through PhD and MPhil degrees in Hong Kong and abroad. Welcome to Lingnan and the Department of Management! Dean Tjosvold Academic Dean, Faculty of Business Director, Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Henry Y. W. Fong Chair Professor of Management Lingnan University 2

13 Views from Past Graduates LIU Lanyu - Zhongnan University of Economics and Law After spending one full year at Lingnan University, I am sure it was indeed a wise decision to choose the MSc in HRM & OB programme. During this year, I have gained not only knowledge about HRM and OB, but also the ability to learn new things quickly and effectively. Courses such as Contemporary HRM, OB and Performance Management taught me useful theories about human resource management, while activities such as visits to companies like MYTOPHOME provided precious experience about human resource management practices in companies. This year at Lingnan has also enabled me to deal with work pressure effectively, to work in a team smoothly and to be a leader successfully. Furthermore, professors and classmates were all very kind and warm hearted. We were all like a family and the year was a great experience by any standards. In short, the year at Lingnan University is the year I will always remember and appreciate throughout my life. LI Changyu - Anhui University of Finance & Economics The experience of studying MSc in Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour Programme (HRM & OB) at Lingnan was invaluable. I not only acquired advanced knowledge and skills, combined with understanding of best practices in human resource management and organisational behavior, but was also able to develop a broad global vision and strategic perspective to analyze issues in both business and non-business contexts. More importantly, the programme boosted my confidence significantly. My command of English language too has improved substantially; now I can calmly respond to questions in English with tremendous self-confidence, backed by the requisite specialized knowledge, during interviews and at the workplace. This was inconceivable for me a year ago. What impressed me the most was the faculty of the programme. Dean always asked us to follow the knee-to-knee, eye-to-eye approach and to strengthen team spirit, interpersonal skills and open-mindedness. I still recall how Robin tended to make exaggerated motions to make me aware of the need for business ethics. Siu, always so considerate, kept telling me that conflict could be something positive too and taught me to handle conflicts correctly. Paul helped me develop strategic insights into a range of business issues. During my one year stay at Lingnan I made me so many friends, from Africa to Hong Kong, all of whom vastly enriched my life. All in all, I extremely appreciate what I gained from the programme. 12

14 Zou Nan - Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine I consider myself lucky to have been enrolled in Lingnan University for the MSc in HRM & OB programme. I had never expected to go beyond Mainland China to pursue a Master degree. I wish to place on record my sincere gratitude to Lingnan for providing me the opportunity to study in Hong Kong the world famous metropolis I have been long yearning to visit and experience. Though the duration of this programme is only one year, I learned so much of academic and non-academic knowledge. The programme has equipped me with understanding of management practices followed in real business world and now I am confident of pursuing a career in human resource management. Currently, I am working in the administrative department at South China Agricultural University. What I learned at Lingnan has enabled me to coordinate the relationships between subordinates and superiors. I remember that the most frequent assignments were various kinds of presentations. That resulted in my oral English improving significantly. I learned at Lingnan the art of attracting the attention of the audience when speaking at a symposium or a meeting. This programme is totally different from those we have in the Mainland. It emphasizes on cooperation among team members and the power of the team, not the individual. If you want to get an A in your assignment, you have to cooperate with your group mates and help them perform better. Thus, it advocates team spirit, which is critical for those who want to develop careers in foreign invested companies. The programme also offers ample opportunities for networking with people from diverse backgrounds. I think Lingnan is one of the world s leading liberal arts universities. It equips you with ample intellectual abilities, as well as spiritual knowledge and understanding. Wang Zezhong - Minzu University of China I had the dream of studying in Hong Kong and experiencing the life there. It was my good fortune that I had the opportunity to study MSc in HRM & OB at Lingnan University and I think I can feel proud of having been selected as one of the best students by so illustrious a place of learning. Life at Lingnan was thoroughly enjoyable and yet full of opportunities for learning and knowledge. The teachers were excellent and the students were nice, including myself! We all learned ways of working in cooperation with each other, like a team, and to achieve common goals. Thanks to the MSc in HRM & OB programme, and thanks to this excellent university, I not only fulfilled my dream of studying in Hong Kong but was also able to make my career move in the desired direction. I have an excellent job now, largely because of what I learned at Lingnan. 13
