5 CANCELLATION POLICIES Payment Policy: Payment is required at the time of registration to confirm your seat(s) in class. You may pay either over the phone or in person at our office. We accept cash, money orders, Interac (debit) payments, Visa, MasterCard, Amex, e-transfer and company purchase order. Course prices include the cost of workbooks. Training programs are Tax Exempt. Course Cancellation: St. John Ambulance reserves the right to cancel any program if there is inadequate enrollment. In the event that a course must be cancelled, you will be informed by telephone or in advance. You may then either reschedule for another course or receive reimbursement of course fees. Cancellation/Transfer by Student: Course fees are non-refundable. Failure to show for a scheduled class will result in a loss of course fees. Students may transfer to another class however a transfer fee of $15 may apply. A group failing to cancel within 3 business days will be subject to a $100 group cancellation fee. PROVINCIAL OH&S REGULATIONS Where a full time employee works alone must hold a valid Emergency First Aid Certificate. Where the workplace is an office must have at least one employee per shift hold a valid Emergency First Aid Certificate. 6 CPR & AED Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation & Automated External Defibrillation CPR LEVEL A & AED TIME: 3.5 hours FEE: $50/person This course teaches the skills required for Adult Resuscitation with AED training. CPR LEVEL C & AED TIME: 8 hours FEE: $70/person This course teaches the skills required for Adult, Child and Infant Resuscitation; including One and Two Rescuer CPR, First Aid for Choking and proper use of barrier devices. Also includes AED training. CPR & AED RECERTIFICATION TIME: FEE: CPR Level A-Recert 2 hours $30/person CPR Level C-Recert 3.5 hours $55/person Students will receive recertification in CPR Levels A or C by exhibiting a solid understanding (through testing) of the theory and skills taught in the course. Also includes AED training. PRE-REQUISITE: Proof of previous CPR certification required. CPR FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS TIME: 8 hours FEE: $75/person Specifically designed for the Health Care Professional, this course provides training on the skills required for Adult, Child and Infant Resuscitation; includes One and Two Rescuer, First Aid for Choking and proper use of barrier devices in resuscitation. Students will also learn proper use of the Bag Valve Mask (BVM) and receive certification in the use of an AED. Includes Adult Resuscitation and one rescuer with AED training. (Worksites with 1-19 employees per shift) STANDARD FIRST AID/CPR LEVEL A & AED TIME: 16 hrs (2 days) FEE: $110/person This course provides additional training to enhance basic First Aid skills. Includes Adult Resuscitation with one rescuer CPR with AED training. 8 FAMILY / CHILD EMERGENCY CHILD CARE TIME: 8 hours FEE: $75/person This course provides excellent training for parents, grandparents, day care workers, or anyone involved with the care of children from newborn to eight years of age. Offered in a full-day or flexible multi-day format, it covers Basic First Aid skills and CPR for children and infants. WHAT EVERY BABYSITTER SHOULD KNOW TIME: 7 hours FEE: $40/person Designed for youth ages 11-15, this course provides valuable information on caring for infants, toddlers and older children. Topics include Basic First Aid, Injury Prevention and Responsibilities of a mature babysitter. HOME ALONE TIME: 2.5 hours (9:00-11:30am) FEE: $25/person Ideally, children should be supervised at all times. Home Alone is for children 9 11 year of age who may have to spend a brief amount of time alone due to parents stuck in traffic, or any unforeseen circumstance. Students will learn home safety procedures, ways to obtain emergency help and when it is appropriate to call 911. Other topics include healthy eating, fighting boredom, overcoming fears, and fire safety. HOME ALONE with BASIC FIRST AID TIME: 7 hours (9:00-4:00pm) FEE: $40/person In addition to attending the Home Alone class, students will learn Basic First Aid which may include topics as: safety awareness, choking, unconscious recovery, bleeding & bandages, poison, sprains & broken bones, headneck & back injuries, frost bite & burns. Students will be required to bring a pen or pencil and their lunch. *Includes a Home Alone reference guide, We Can Help book and a certificate. PET FIRST AID TIME: 4 hours FEE: $55/person This course is designed to give pet lovers the skills required to provide first aid to an injured pet. Pet First Aid provides you with the necessary skills to respond safely and effectively in an emergency situation. 9 ADVANCED FIRST AID ADVANCED MEDICAL FIRST RESPONDER I TIME: 5 days FEE: $350/person This course is designed for industrial responders and those involved in high risk sports or hobbies. It meets Occupational Health and Safety Regulations for worksites with 100 employees or more. It also includes training in topographical terms, anatomy, CPR Level C and AED. *AMFR Recertification: TIME: 4 days FEE: $250/person (PRE-REQUISITE: current with AMFR-full course) ADVANCED MEDICAL FIRST RESPONDER II TIME: 10 days FEE: $650/person An in-depth program for persons whose primary responsibility is emergency response. This course prepares professional health and safety personnel to provide emergency and extended care in remote or high risk areas. OXYGEN ADMINISTRATION TIME: 7 hours FEE: $60/person Designed for special client groups such as firefighters, divers, search and rescue personnel and others who administer oxygen for first aid or home health care. VOLUNTEER MEDICAL RESPONDER PROGRAM Many Advanced Medical First Responders are also proud Volunteer Medical Responders, providing community service funded through the sales of first aid training and kits. 10 ADDITIONAL COURSES WORKPLACE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INFORMATION SYSTEM (WHMIS) TIME: 4 hours FEE: $45/person This course delivers information on common workplace chemical hazards and the safe use of potentially hazardous materials. Topics include: Supplier, Employer and Employee Responsibilities, Hazard Symbols, Workplace and Supplier Labels, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Personal Protective Equipment. WILDERNESS FIRST AID TIME: 16 hours (2 days + expenses) FEE: $110/person For people who live, work or play in wilderness environments. The scenario based training will teach students how to treat injuries using readily available materials; then make the decision to transport the casualty or wait for help. Students MUST dress appropriately for the weather. DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIME: 6.5 hours (8:30am - 3:00 pm) FEE: $110/person Our Defensive Driving course is an established Canada Safety Council Program that meets the needs of today s complex traffic environment. Designed for the adult learner, this classroom program offers visual learning and group discussion. Defensive Driving teaches specific techniques for avoiding all types of potentially hazardous traffic situations. Topics include Collision Avoidance, Recognizing Hazards and more. This course meets the requirements of Nova Scotia s exit from the Graduated Licensing Program. PROFESSIONAL DRIVER IMPROVEMENT TIME: 6.5 hours FEE: $110/person Professional Driver Improvement is designed for professional drivers with the objective of improving their defensive driving techniques. Presented in a classroom setting, the six hour Canada Safety Council program covers defensive driving techniques and how to avoid potentially dangerous situations. Classroom participation involves case studies and active discussion of real life situations, as well as identification of traffic hazards. 11 ADDITIONAL COURSES Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Private Group Only, max of 12 TIME: 4 hours FEE: $500/group This course provides an introduction to TDG, covering its Regulations and Proper Trainiing, Proper documentation, Safety Marks and Means of Containment, Forbidden Goods, Exemptions and Special Provisions, and Procedures to follow in the event of an emergency. The classroom setting allows for questions and answers; the knowledgeable Instructor can custom the program to meet your specific company needs. Private group only. MARINE FIRST AID MARINE BASIC FIRST AID TIME: 2 days FEE: $115/person An excellent course for both the recreational boater and the professional mariner. This course is similar to Standard First Aid with CPR. It is accompanied by a marine supplement which includes chapters on marine related topics. *Please have your CDN# available at the time of registration. This course is approved by Transport Canada and meets the requirements for those in the marine industry who require this certification. MARINE ADVANCED FIRST AID TIME: 5 days FEE: $350/person This course is similar to the Advanced Medical First Responder 1 course. It includes the use of oxygen, spinal immobilization and advanced first aid skills, as well as CPR and AED. *Please have your CDN# available at the time of registration. This course is approved by Transport Canada and meets the requirements for those in the marine industry who require this certification. 12 INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS (IDP) INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR DEFENSIVE DRIVING /PROFESSIONAL DRIVER IMPROVEMENT COURSE TIME: 5 days FEE: $850/certificate or $1300 for both certificates (save $400) This five day program provides students with the skills required to teach the Canada Safety Council six hour Defensive Driving Course or the Professional Driver Improvement Course. The emphasis for this program will be on instructional technique. Students will review the content of the Defensive Driving and Professional Driver Improvement programs and then, using the principles of adult education, present various components of the course. INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (IDP) TIME: 5 days FEE: $380/person The St. John Ambulance Instructor Development Program is recognized as one of the best of its kind. The IDP course is a modular program that focuses on applying the latest principles of adult education. Some topics discussed include the qualities of a good instructor, proper questioning techniques and use of training aids. Student teaching sessions give the opportunity to practice First Aid and presentation skills while applying current principles of adult education. PRE-REQUISITES: Candidates must hold a valid St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid/CPR Level C certification issued within the past 12 months. Students must also complete a pre-course package prior to the IDP start date and submit a police record check on the first day of class. PRE-REQUISITE: Instructor Development Program Certificate WHMIS INSTRUCTOR PROGRAM TIME: 3 days FEE: $300/person The WHMIS Instructor Program equips the student with the necessary skills and knowledge to teach WHMIS. 14 ONLINE COURSES Please contact your local SJA office to obtain a password for online courses: WHMIS FEE: $37.50 The online WHMIS course provides students with the necessary skills to access and apply the information needed to protect their health and safety while working with the WHMIS controlled products. The course meets the legislated worker training requirements for all federal and provincial workplaces in all provinces and territories. WHMIS REFRESHER FEE: $15 (exam fee) This course is intended for individuals who have previously taken WHMIS training. The course meets the legislated worker training requirements for all federal and provincial workplaces in all provinces and territories. FIRE SAFETY AWARENESS FEE: $19.95 The Fire Safety course consists of four main sections including Basic Workplace Fire Safety Awareness, Fire Safety and Prevention, Fire Extinguishers and The Proper Use of Fire Extinguishers. TRANSPORTATION OF DANGEROUS GOODS (TDG) FEE: $34.95 This course provides an introduction to TDG, covering its Regulations and Proper Training, Proper Documentation, Safety Marks and Means of Containment, Forbidden Goods, Exemptions and Special Provisions, Immediate Reporting and Procedures to follow in the event of emergency. LOCK-OUT/TAG-OUT FEE: $19.95 This program explains the importance of Lock-Out/Tag- Out in safeguarding workers who operate machinery or processes in the industry. 15 ONLINE COURSES WORKPLACE HARASSMENT SENSITIVITY TRAINING FEE: $29.95 Workplace Harassment Sensitivity Training is a three unit course for both management and non-management employees. Upon completion of the course, individuals should be equipped to recognize and properly address workplace harassment and to prevent such situations when possible. BOATING SAFETY FEE: $25 (exam fee) We are now the regional testing centre for receiving your Canadian Coast Guard Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). St. John Ambulance is pleased to offer the Boating Safety program to keep you safe on the waters. Simply study the course online at and write the test at your local testing centre. MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY FEE: $280 The Medical Terminology course provides an introduction to the professional language used by those who are directly and indirectly involved with the art of healing. The program will also introduce those not currently involved in the health care environment with an introduction to the language of medicine. In addition, the program will provide participants with the basics of human anatomy and physiology.
