Since the early stages of remarkable growth in Korean economy, Sogang economists made direct contribution to economic policy formation. Based on the rich tradition, the Sogang School of economics offers curriculum that is balanced in theory and applications. Sogang Economics provides top quality education. Sogang School of Economics is second to none in teaching. Emphasizing precision and excellence in University education since its inception, Sogang University proudly leads others. Sogang Economics has a lot of academic curiosity. Faculty members research interests span wide range of economics, including influence of climatic and biological environment on human lives, motive for irrational economic behavior, sports economics, and arts and economics. Classes are full of cutting-edge economics in the variety of fields. Sogang Economics means excellence in research. All faculty members study cutting-edge modern economics and teach the latest economic knowledge in class. This tradition led to the current top quality economic education institution. In Korean financial industry, they refer to this group is Yeouido Sogang School of Economics, named after the location of Seoul s financial district. Sogang Economics means network and prestige. 4 04 yesterday Convocation Photo, Class of 1968 Over 6,000 Graduates from Sogang School of Economics Starting Modern Economic Education in Korea Sogang School of Economics started with 49 students at the inception of Sogang University in 1960 and produced its first 27 graduates in The School was the origin of systematic curriculum in economics in Korea. The school revolutionized economic education in Korea by acquiring the first generation of Korean professors who had rigorous training in modern economics in PhD programs of the United States in the 1960s and the 1970s. Cornerstone of Korean Economic Development Sogang School of Economics represents proud history of Korean economic development. The general notion in Korea is that many professors from the school made significant contributions in Korea s achievement of current level of prosperity, by participating in primary economic policy development. As well, in the past 50 years, over 6,000 graduates who were well-educated from the school became the backbone of the economic development. Tradition of Sogang School of Economics In the United States there are several school of thought in economics with unique views on fundamental issues, such as Chicago school and Harvard school, but there is only one school of economics in Korea, the Sogang School of Economics. In the phrase Sogang School implies that Sogang School of Economics is recognized as the best in the nation both in terms of its research and its academic excellence.

8 School of Economics 08 Sogang School of Economics Strives for World-Class Research Capacity World-Class Research Capacity Selection in SSK and SRF Faculty members in the school of economics publish numerous papers every year in world renowned academic journals (American Economic Review, Review of Economics and Statistics). Also, a book co-authored with a Nobel Laureate (The Changing Body, Cambridge University Press, 2011) has been praised by leading mass media around the world (New York Times, Science, Nature, and etc). Various research activities by faculty members are supported by research grants from within and outside of Sogang University. In 2010, two research groups from the department received Korean Social Science Research Fund (SSK); and the department received Sogang Research Frontier (SRF). The grants aim to support cutting-edge research groups that greatly contribute to advancement in economic knowledge.
9 School of Economics 09 Dean s List Among students who completed more than 15 credits with Suma Cum Laude, we select 5 per semester. Pyungsan Research Fellow At annual personnel committee we select a professor with the best research achievement and provide research fund for 2 years from Pyungsan fund. Sogang Alumni Award At school of economics alumnae association, selection committee selects one winner from each of the following fields: media/politics, academics/public servants, and business. Strict Academic Management but Autonomy in Education We are known for strict administrative rules and their enforcements. 11 School of Economics 113 SOGANG SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS Facilities Sung-Ahm Seminar Room, POSCO Seminar Room The school has seminar facilities of various sizes with top-notch modern equipment suited for international conferences, for brown bag seminars, weekly academic seminars by domestic/international speakers, workshops and conferences. Economics Cafe The school provides spaces for group discussions/seminars for economics faculty and students. Numerous reading groups by areas of specialty are held in these facilities. Department Computer Lab The school has its own computer room with brand new PC s updated in The computers are equipped with licensed software essential for economic analysis including Stata, Gauss, Matlab, SAS and EViews. Many economics students utilize the facility and software package for research. At the Pinnacle
