2 UCSB Receives Major Grant to Support Ph.D. Students The National Science Foundation s IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship) program is a US Government initiative for improving the quality and relevance of graduate-level education. Each year universities from around the US vigorously compete for one of about 20 IGERT awards. Sept. 2001: UCSB awarded $2.7 million grant for new Economics & Environmental Science program Bulk of award is for Ph.D. student fellowship support First students entered Fall 2002 Several EES fellowships will be awarded this year to students enrolled in or accepted into the Ph.D. programs in the Department of Economics or the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UCSB. EES Fellowships are generous: $30,000 annual stipend plus most tuition, fees, and similar expenses (such as books) Multi-year support, including up to 3 years of fellowship support for Environmental Economics Emphasis (1 year of fellowship support for Environmental Science Emphasis) Fellowship recipients must be US Citizens or Permanent Residents International students may participate in the program with their own funding. Limited university and department financial aid is available to outstanding students. 3 What Makes the EES Program Unique? The goal of the EES program is to provide a new model for doctoral education in environmental and resource economics. A Ph.D. is a research degree and EES students will be positioned as research leaders. Students choose one of two emphases for their Ph.D. an emphasis in environmental economics, with a secondary strength in an area of natural science; training in economics is deep and rigorous, as strong as in the best doctoral programs an emphasis in an area of environmental science, with a secondary emphasis in environmental economics; no compromises in the depth of the environmental science training Professional Development Opportunities Integrative seminars in environmental policy, economics &natural science Policy internship opportunities Extensive research mentoring Travel budget to attend professional meetings Workshops in ethics, presentation skills and proposal writing EES Students will be at a distinct advantage when they seek employment, post-ph.d.: Training in both economics and natural science is uncommon and in demand Dissertation research that is unique and substantive Professional preparation that provides visibility and maturity 3

4 What is Environmental & Resource Economics? The economy and the environment are intimately connected: Economic activity stresses the environment, generating pollution The economy uses environmental resources (including fisheries, forests, minerals and energy) The government regulates the economy s impact on the environment Society is always looking for better ways of achieving balance among environmental, economic and social objectives The study of the economy and its interaction with the environment is the purview of environmental and resource economics. What are the Professional Opportunities? 5 UCSB: The Place to Study Economics & Environmental Science The University of California at Santa Barbara, ranked as one of the world s best research universities, is particularly strong in environmental economics and environmental science. The ten-campus University of California system is the world s premier public university system. Economics is strong at UCSB, with one of our faculty receiving the 2004 Nobel Prize in Economics (Prof. Finn Kydland). Traditional strengths in the Department of Economics are Applied Microeconomics, Public Economics, Labor Economics, Macroeconomics and Environmental Economics. Environmental science is strong at UCSB, with the University of California s first graduate school of the environment and other superb departments. The Donald Bren School of Environmental Science & Management graduates about 70 students per year from its professional master s and researchoriented Ph.D. programs. Several NSF-supported centers for environmental research draw scholars from around the world. Environmental economics is strong at UCSB. Leading journals in the field edited currently or recently at UCSB: Journal of Environmental Economics and Management Resource and Energy Economics The past president of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE) is the faculty director of the EES program UCSB initiated and continues to host the Occasional California Workshop in Environmental and Resource Economics, bringing together faculty and graduate students from throughout western North America. UCSB hosts numerous other workshops and conferences on environmental and resource economics 5

6 Are You a Potential EES Student? The EES program is open to students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Appropriate undergraduate majors include natural science, engineering, mathematics, economics or any quantitative field. Quantitative skills are important Demonstrated interest in economics is important Apply for admission to either the Bren School or the Department of Economics. Each unit s Ph.D. program has a slightly different orientation Carefully review entrance and degree requirements for the academic unit to which you plan to apply Unsure as to which department at UCSB to apply?
