COLLEGE BOUND providing the tools for success
College Bound It is no secret that attending college and obtaining a degree help advance professional careers and foster progress and success in today s world. Education is a critical issue and now more than ever, parents, children and teens should recognize the benefits and importance of a higher education. Preparing for college should begin at a young age and can seem very overwhelming. For some children and teens, college is a given. For others, college seems impossible. For children and teens at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta even those who might be the first in their families to go to college there is College Bound. This program shows Boys & Girls Clubs teens that college is a realistic goal and provides guidence for reaching this goal.
What is College Bound? College Bound is an educational leadership program developed and provided by Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta (BGCMA). The program is designed to support high school students who are active members of BGCMA, through the college preparation and application process. The program helps students with: Meeting the requirements for college admissions Preparing for transition from high school to college Accessing scholarships and funding for college How do students participate? College Bound participants must meet the following criteria: Members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta High school students (grades 9-12) Minimum grade point average of 2.0 Complete annual application process by the deadline Participate in at least 3 required programs per semester
Why is College Bound so important? High school students who are involved in a formalized college preparatory process stand a far greater chance of entering college than those who are not Persons with more education can expect higher lifetime earnings Lifetime earnings for high school graduates average $1.2 million, while earnings for college graduates average more than $2.1 million What College Bound promises to students: Assist with the college application/financial aid process One-on-one educational advisement counseling Leadership development programs Scholarship information & funding Georgia Graduation Test preparation SAT preparation College tours For more information on College Bound and how to be a part of the program: LaFonda Williams, lwilliams@bgcma.org or (404)
The Promise of College Bound Amanda s story: After joining College Bound, my attitude changed about school and graduating. I realized I could make high school fun or I could make it the worst thing in the world. What makes the difference is my attitude. I learned so many things in the College Bound program, like how to manage my time wisely, how to choose a college and how to apply for financial aid things I would not have learned anywhere else. College Bound made me feel knowledgeable and secure about college. I found I could be myself in this program and could share my feelings with the staff about issues relating to college. I want to major in Computer Science and Marketing and have career goals to own a computer business or work for the Federal Government. Thanks to College Bound, I am determined to graduate from college. I feel a sense of accomplishment, and I know I will make something of myself. When I picture my college graduation, I think to myself I m not a statistic, and I am going to be somebody! Today, Amanda is attending Fort Valley State University and on her way to reaching her goals and full potential thanks to College Bound and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. Amanda is only one of the many lives changed by this program. College Bound is offered to students in all of BGCMA s Clubs and gives hundreds of teens the support they need. College Bound began in 1994 and has been growing each year. Since inception, the students not only graduate high school, but 82% of them go on to enter college. Nationally, Boys & Girls Club teens graduate from high school at a rate of 87%, compared to the national average of 66% and they finish college at a rate of 25% compared to the national average of 16%. For more information on how you can support College Bound through a financial contribution, sponsorship or in-kind support, contact Missy Dugan, VP of Marketing & Development at (404) or mdugan@bgcma.org.
