The program combines a comprehensive public policy and management curriculum with a compulsory 12 week internship program and an industry based System Synthesis Project, these real-world components of the program provide you with work-experience and industry knowledge to kick-start your career and differentiate you in the competitive global market. 7 INTERNSHIPS Students of the MSPPM 21 Month program are provided the opportunity to undertake a 12 week internship with public and private companies or government agencies to gain invaluable real world work experience. Internships provide the opportunity for students to gain a better understanding of the practical challenges facing today s institutions, adding greater depth of knowledge and experience to an already robust degree. SYSTEMS SYNTHESIS PROJECT The System Synthesis Project takes students beyond theory into the practical application of skills through the opportunity to work with public and private companies, government agencies on real-world projects. The goal of these projects is to provide MSPPM students with the skills necessary for structuring, managing, and carrying out projects within an organisation. This project provides the opportunity to consolidate and apply the skills and knowledge developed in previous coursework in a team-based approach to a real problem. A team of students works with a real-world client on a real-world problem of value to the client. Most important, this is an opportunity to apply the team's advanced engineering and management skills, including the specialized knowledge and skills needed to solve a real problem. In particular, team members must learn to work effectively with clients, quickly understand their problem, negotiate deliverables and then select, adapt and apply just the right amount of process and documentation to meet clients' needs and effectively manage the project. 9 CURRICULUM Our MSPPM program features a unique interdisciplinary curriculum of analytical and quantitative studies. Students are empowered to customise their degree by selecting from a variety of course electives carried out via coursework and independent study. The MSPPM curriculum is a unique blend of interdisciplinary analytical and quantitative studies. We are widely recognised for our unique interdisciplinary environment, encouraging work across departmental lines. As a result, our MSPPM graduates enter the world with the ability to solve complex problems. The MSPPM program requires you to study 198 units in total comprising of 144 units worth of core courses and 42 units of elective courses. This combination of courses allows you to tailor the program to your career and interest needs by selecting relevant elective course whilst studying core courses, which provide a core foundation of skills and knowledge. Full-time students complete the program over five study periods. Students may commence in the August intakes. Each study period is the equivalent to weeks of study and usually comprises of 48 units worth of courses. Each course is awarded either 6 or 12 unit weighting Therefore you can study a combination of 6 and 12 unit courses to meet your program requirements. Elective courses will be offered in a variety of areas related to the technology and business of information and communication technology. These courses will be offered by resident faculty as well as by faculty from other CMU campuses through short-term visits and distance learning. Course Exemption If you have a strong background in any of the core courses, you can receive an exemption either by passing an exemption exam administered during your orientation program or through successful completion of comparable coursework during your undergraduate studies. Exempting a course doesn't reduce the required number of courses you must complete but instead allow you to choose additional elective courses to expand your knowledge base and further tailor your program.
11 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS All applicants applying for a program at Carnegie Mellon University Australia are required to satisfy the entry requirements for admission. 1. ACADEMIC COURSE PREREQUISITE Applicants are required to have programming experience in data structures and an object-oriented programming language such as C, C++ or Java. CV/RESUME Applicants are required to submit a resume. Please submit a one or two page summary of your education skills, accomplishments, employment experience and volunteer experience. The resume must be current and include all part time and full time work experience, the dates of when the employment began and ended and a brief description of your responsibilities under the title of the position. 8. RECOMMENDATIONS Applicants are required to have three recommendations submitted on their behalf. Recommendation forms must be completed by three people who can provide academic or professional references. Please note recommendations from friends, family members or acquaintances, and other sources not able to evaluate applicants on an academic or professional basis, will not be accepted. Recommendations are submitted electronically through the online application system by your recommenders. We do not accept recommendations submitted on paper. The applicant must input the names and contact information for each recommendation provider into the application system. 14 STEP THREE After you apply and accepting your offer Acknowledgement The Admissions Office will send an acknowledgement to you once you have submitted your application. If your application is complete and we do not require any further information your application will be assessed by the Admissions Selection Committee. This takes approximately one - two weeks. Offer process If your application is successful, your letter of admission will be ed directly to you (and if applying with an authorised education agent, copied to your nominated representative). If the offer is conditional you need to meet the conditions of your offer before accepting. If you have been sent an unconditional offer (no conditions), you can choose to accept it immediately.
