1 Overview The Doctor of degree (D.E.T.) prepares candidates to conduct rigorous evaluations of educational technology environments and to design solutions that enhance contemporary schools at all levels from K-12 through higher education and corporate training and development programs in the private and non-profi t sectors. The D.E.T. from Central Michigan University will prepare graduates for careers in K-12 schools, virtual schools, community colleges, 4-year colleges, and universities as well as corporate, industrial, and military settings. Job titles include: Faculty Member Instructional Designer Online Curriculum Specialist Educational Developer Instructional Technology Specialist Training Integration Specialist Education Services Specialist and many more in this rapidly-growing field Format The D.E.T. is a 54 credit program. Courses are taught online in full 16-week semesters. The dissertation is based on research done by the student. It is comprised of several shorter sections that are each independent and publishable. This provides several different perspectives or lenses on the data collected that together demonstrate an expert depth of understanding of the phenomenon under investigation. Expectations for independent work on the dissertation are high. To this end, each student will have a committee of faculty members to help work through the research and writing plus a dissertation advisor to provide even more support. Online Delivery Coursework is delivered online. There are no required visits to campus, no weekends at far away locations, and no summer face-to-face requirements. Over the fi rst two years, students will take 12 courses. Each semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer) they will take two courses at the same time. Some activities within courses will be asynchronous and some will be synchronous, requiring participation at a specifi c time. Students take 12 courses during the fi rst two years. They also participate in a preliminary evaluation of skills near the end of the third semester and work on an Independent Inquiry Project (IIP). The IIP is a small research project presented to faculty and classmates during the fourth semester of the program. Near the end of the second year, students participate in a comprehensive evaluation. This ensures a broad foundation of understanding in the fi eld and evaluates progress in research prior to the dissertation.
