2 Cost-effective and reliable data transmission is critical for the successful implementation of all industrial monitoring systems. For food industry it is like nervous system and is necessary for: food production monitoring food transportation monitoring food traceability I will focus on transportation, monitoring as an example of distributed system.

3 Goals of food transportation monitoring: to guarantee the quality of food during transportation (especially frozen food) to optimize transportation network to increase people security to enable statistical process control and reduce costs

4 From technical point of view there are four main modes of data transmission: Low Power Radio in MHz/GHz range Packet data transmission via mobile phone network GSM/GPRS Satellite data transmission Transmission via Internet Each of them have own advantages and disadvantages.

5 Low Power Radio Advantages: cheap, reliable, flexible Disadvantages: low range Packet data transmission via mobile phone network GSM/GPRS Advantages: flexible not limited by distance quite cheap reliable if you can reach your operator Disadvantages: some rural and not urbanized areas are not covered by GSM network Satellite data transmission Advantages: reliable not limited by distance covers all Europe Disadvantages: very expensive

6 To sum up: If you need user friendly, reliable, and cost-effective data transmission network for monitoring frozen food transportation you have to combine different modes of data transmission. E.g. Low power radio + GSM + Satellite +Internet
