Volunteer spotlight On a cold March day I arrived at New Hope Education Center on the wrong day for my scheduled appointment. I came back a week later and I am so happy I did. I had finished high school in June 2013 and I was looking for a career. I enrolled in the Customer Service and Call Center Operations class and graduated in May. I accepted an internship at New Hope later that month. Some of my tasks are greeting people, answering the phone, filing, mailings and assisting the staff with their scheduled appointments. Some days are busier than others but I keep on coming back, no matter how hard it gets. My education at New Hope Education Center really prepared me for this job. Although my position is an unpaid internship, I am sure that my skills will help me find a job doing what I love to do, which is helping people. This is important to me because many people helped me. My family helped me most of all. I have many dreams in my life that I would like to pursue, these people helped me get started by choosing the one that is a perfect fit for me. I have discovered that I am very good at what I do. Being in a wheelchair makes some of my dreams harder to reach but not impossible. I am happy to find a place like New Hope. Editors note: Miranda not only works the reception desk at New Hope but she also volunteers at the Baby and Children's Ministry. M I R A N D A H E Y E R Basket Raffle and Silent Auction Items Needed Can you help Harvest House secure donations to make this the best dinner ever? We had a wonderful Gift Gathering Party and so far have over 80 wonderful baskets but we can use more. We also need items for the silent auction. Do you know a sports personality who might be able to donate their time or an autographed item? Do you have a vacation home you would be willing to donate for a week or weekend? Will your company make a donation? We are open to all suggestions. Some suggestions for basket items include: Made in America or Made in Buffalo basket; Automotive/Car Care Basket; Chocolate/Jams/Jellies Basket; Movie Tickets/Video Basket; Book Basket; Holiday Theme Basket including Thanksgiving and Christmas Themes; Florist Gift Certificate Basket. If you can t make a basket but still want to help, send a lottery ticket and we will make up a basket with these ever popular items. volunteers needed for dinner We will need help on the evening of October 2nd with the event. Volunteers are needed to help collect admission tickets; sell raffle tickets; sell basket auction tickets; distribute prizes after raffle ends. If you can help, please call the office at and talk to Joanne or Linda who will be glad to sign you up! The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be 3
4 175 Jefferson Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14210, Happy 10th Anniversary Good Neighbors Health Care! Good Neighbors Health Care opened its doors November 5, In the beginning we were just open Friday afternoons. Now we are open three times a week to serve the community. Good Neighbors provides Primary Care, Sonograms, Mental Health and Spiritual Counseling, Dental and Eye Care for uninsured people. God has provided us with compassionate, loving, and experts in their fields, team of volunteers, which numbers about 90. The team work here at Good Neighbors and the Harvest House Ministry Center is second to none. It is a blessing to be part of this Ministry. In the past 10 years we have served approximately 14,750 patients which adds up to about 21,100 visits! In celebration of the 10th anniversary we are having a pot luck dinner at the Harvest House on Seneca Street (where everything started) for the volunteers and a Praise Worship Concert to God (open to all) on Saturday November 1st. Please keep Good Neighbors in your prayers as we look to the future on how to better serve Western New York. On Saturday September 6th a spiritual retreat will be held at Harvest House for the volunteers. On Sunday, October 26th an Open House will be held so you, our supporters and the community can come and see the center and help Good Neighbors Health Care celebrate 10 years. A lot is going on at Good Neighbors Health Care! Tom Koch, Director, Good Neighbors Health Care Live simply so others my simply live.
5 175 Jefferson Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14210, Something to smile about We have something to SMILE about at the Dental office at Good Neighbors Health Care. One of the best parts of being involved at the Dental office at Good Neighbors is watching God at work! Oh, HE has been very, very busy at our beloved Dental Office at 175 Jefferson Avenue. We have had to limit our hours because we didn t have enough staff. Not anymore! Our prayers for more dentist have been answered. At this time last year our office hours were limited by the number of dentist that were available. All of our volunteer dentist have private practices and some teach at UB Dental School. Thanks to our heavenly Father we now have enough dentist to be open every Monday evening, and two dentist available for every Wednesday and, for the first time since Good Neighbors opened, we can now provide enough dentist to be open every Friday in July and August! We even have two dentist that have retired and closed their practice who continue their dedication to the Lord s work by coming in regularly. Hold on, I m not done!! Not only did more dentist agree to volunteer but so did their office staff!! All of this has allowed us to increase our ability to put more smiles on more faces and that is certainly something to SMILE about! Praise and thanksgiving to our Father in Heaven and to all the dental staff of our western New York community who have answered His call. Joyfully Yours, Lynn Ryan, Dental Coordinator
6 175 Jefferson Avenue Buffalo, NY New Hope News The staff and volunteers at New Hope Education Center have been busy saying Good Luck to students graduating from our 2014 classes and Welcome to New Hope to new students entering new programs. It s always bittersweet to say Good Luck to students graduating from our programs but I m overjoyed when one comes back to share their success. New Hope Student Spotlight Michael Brice came to New Hope to start his career in the Health Profession. His long-term goal is to become a Registered Nurse (RN). Michael is smart, caring and has a quick smile, everything you d look for in a good nurse. He s a single father raising a beautiful daughter, Kendell, who is ten years old. Michael needed to find a good job to support his daughter as he reached for his dream of being an RN so he enrolled in the Erie 2 CC BOCES Certified Nursing Program at New Hope. This nine week program certifies Michael both as a Home Health Aide and Certified Nursing Assistant, allowing him to work in home health care, a nursing home or hospital as he finishes his education. During his time at New Hope, Michael and I had a number of wonderful conversations about raising our families, faith and working in ministry. I encouraged him to think about working in the faith community. Michael came in last week to let us know that he has been blessed with a new job at Catholic Health and is excited to begin his career. We wish him God s Speed! What s New? This fall, we ll offer seventeen opportunities for education and training at New Hope! Eighteen LPN students graduated from the Erie 2 CC BOCES LPN Program in June and 29 NEW LPN students were welcomed to New Hope in July the largest class we ve had to-date. Buffalo Public Schools have also been busy graduating classes in Medical Office Occupations, Computer Courses, Construction Trades, Customer Service, and Engineering. New Classes are being added in the fall including Labor Relations. ECC s Pathways Program is moving students from New Hope to College! I was thrilled to have a student stop by my office to share that his test scores have improved three grade levels and he s ready (with support from the great staff in the Pathways Program) to enter the Culinary Arts Program at ECC! I m excited to see a number of students from our programs volunteering in our ministries, looking both to give back and to gain experience, using the knowledge they have gained in class. The Vision and Mission of the New Hope Education Center is being lived out in the students, teachers, staff, and volunteers who are part of what make New Hope a special place to learn. Carol Murphy, Director New Hope Education Center

Summer Fun Congratulations to Eagle Scout recipient Jason Stuhr! Eagle Scout is the highest award a Scout can earn and takes considerable work and dedication. For his project Jason collected items for the Harvest House Baby and Children's Ministry. Beside collecting items, which numbered in the thousands, Jason and his crew of volunteers also sorted the items by size, which was a huge help. Gary and Linda Tatu were proud to be in the audience and witness Jason receive his well deserved award. This summer the Harvest House Retreat Center was filled with guests from all over the United States and the World. With 69 straight days of overnight guests the building was filled with the sounds of teenagers and adults having a wonderful time working for, and praising, the Lord. Guests came from Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Massachusetts, Florida, New Jersey, North Carolina, Georgia, Ontario and South Africa to stay at the warm and welcoming facility that is Harvest House. When the Baby and Children's Ministry moved, the former space was converted to additional meeting space. We never dreamt it would be needed so much but this summer the new space, which is called the Annex was used 4 times! Why not host a Dress Down Day at your school or work? You took my parking place at church One day, a man went to visit a church. He got there early, parked his car and got out. Another car pulled up near the driver, got out and said, I always park there! You took my place! The visitor went inside for Sunday School, found an empty seat and sat down. A young lady from the church approached him and stated That s my seat! You took my place! The visitor was somewhat distressed by this rude welcome, but said nothing. After Sunday School, the visitor went into the sanctuary and sat down. Another member walked up to him and said, That s where I always sit. You took my place. The visitor was even more troubled by this treatment, but still said nothing. Later as the congregation was praying for Christ to dwell among them, the visitor stood up, and his appearance began to change. Horrible scars became visible on his hands and on his sandaled feet. Some from the congregation noticed him and called out, What happened to you? The visitor replied, as his hat became a crown of thorns, and a tear fell from his eye, I took your place.
